Air conditioning for The City

Air conditioning for homes and businesses in The City

Good air conditioning starts with the right system in the right place. Each room is assessed for its size, windows, direction and how it’s used, then agree where the indoor and outdoor units go and how the pipework, cable and condensate drain will run before you get a fixed-price quote. Modern air conditioning heats as well as cools: in heating mode they work as an air-to-air heat pump, so a system bought for summer earns its keep in winter too.

Homes around The City typically have room outside for an outdoor unit. More often it’s the walls, the electrics and the length of the pipe run that need thinking about.

For a fault on a system that may still be under warranty, send us the make, model and installation date. We’ll explain how the manufacturer’s terms are likely to apply before anything chargeable is done.

Common questions in The City

Do you cover smaller places like The City?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. Visits to smaller places are planned so the engineer arrives with what the job needs.

Do you cover The City for air conditioning?

We do: The City falls inside our working area. To start, give us a ring on 07833 053749 or email us with a few pictures.

Can I do any of the installation myself?

The refrigerant side has to be done by a qualified engineer working for an F-Gas certified company. That is the law, not just our preference, and it also matters for the manufacturer’s warranty. We can quote for the whole job, from supply to commissioning.

Do I get paperwork after the visit?

Yes. You get a written record of each visit, including F-Gas records for any refrigerant work. File them with the system’s paperwork.

Is air conditioning possible in a flat?

Often, yes, but there are extra steps. Leaseholders normally need consent from the landlord or management company for an outdoor unit and holes through outside walls and the lease will say. Permitted development rules for flats are also tighter than for houses, and we flag anything that may need permission. This is general information, not legal advice.

How long does it take to fit air conditioning?

It takes about a day for a single-room system, longer for multi-room and ducted systems. The survey tells us how long your installation will need so there are no surprises.

Do you have a 24/7 line?

Yes, any time. If something urgent happens, like water coming from a unit or a critical room overheating, call our 24/7 line and we’ll tell you what to do first.

What we do, step by step

Testing is the last part of the visit wherever the system can be switched on. Then we show you what we’ve done and answer any questions, and anything that needs attention later is pointed out. The visit takes a day or more, depending on the number of rooms, the pipe routes and the access. We plan the trip to The City around you.

  1. You send pictures, or we visit and survey the rooms and outside.
  2. The system is sized, positions are agreed and the price is fixed.
  3. On the day, dust sheets go down and the indoor and outdoor units are fitted.
  4. Connections are made, checked for leaks and pulled down to a vacuum.
  5. The system is commissioned, the controls explained and the F-Gas records handed over.

How to prepare

  • Unlock any gate, garage or side passage we need
  • Move furniture away from the wall where we’ll be working
  • Clear access to the fuse board

Getting a price

Some jobs can be priced from pictures, while others need a survey. Multi-room systems, commercial buildings and anything with a long or hidden pipe route are normally surveyed first. Either way, you get a fixed price before any work is booked.

Advice

When it’s something else

Air conditioning cannot fix everything, and we’d rather say so up front. It doesn’t solve:

  • An installation that needs consent nobody has given yet
  • Heat loss through very poor insulation (a system will heat the room, but insulation is a separate job)
  • A lack of fresh air (most split systems recirculate room air rather than bringing fresh air in, which is a job for ventilation)

If you’re not sure, just phone 07833 053749, or email if that’s easier and we’ll give you a straight answer.

Parts of the system we cover

  • Ceiling cassettes
  • Wall-mounted split systems
  • Multi-split systems

Air conditioning around The City

The last census (2021) found about 81% of households in detached or semi-detached houses. With homes like that, finding a sensible outdoor unit position is rarely hard, and a multi-split lets two or more rooms run off it. Listed buildings are part of the picture here: about 6 within half a mile of the centre, such as Ashridge Farmhouse (grade II). Before any outdoor unit is fixed here, we find out whether the building is protected. Where it is, the local planning authority (normally Buckinghamshire council) has the final say on what’s allowed.

About 2.7 miles south-east stands West Wycombe Park House. Listed homes in any area need consent first, so tell us if yours is one.

What we’re called out for in The City

Many people try a portable unit first. A portable unit has to vent its warm air through a hose out of a window, which lets some heat back in, and its compressor sits in the room with you. A fixed split system puts the compressor outside.

Reasons to give us a call include:

  • An office, shop or restaurant that is uncomfortable for staff and customers
  • Expensive direct electric heating
  • Too many options and no clear advice

Homes near Church of St Paul are a good example of where we look up the heritage status of the building before fixing anything to it.

Before you book anyone

  • Whether they looked at the job before pricing it
  • Why the equipment they’re quoting suits the job
  • Whether they hold F-Gas company certification, not just individual qualifications

Choosing an air con installer

Leave it or put it right?

Where the outdoor unit goes matters to you and to the neighbours. A good position keeps noise down and leaves room for servicing, and it can affect whether planning permission is needed. It’s agreed on the survey, not on the day. Small faults tend to grow, so it’s worth dealing with them early.

The price reflects the work, not guesswork. That is why every job is looked at first, and why the quote is fixed before we start.
