Air source heat pumps in Stodmarsh

Air source heat pumps in Stodmarsh

Air-to-water heat pumps heat your hot water through a cylinder. Homes with a combi boiler may not have a cylinder, so finding space for one is part of the survey. Air-to-air systems do not heat hot water, so you will need another way to do that. We’re often asked to deal with questions about the Boiler Upgrade Scheme and a boiler that’s getting old, across homes heated by oil, LPG or gas, underfloor heating and air-to-air heat pumps.

In a place like Stodmarsh, some homes are listed, because permitted development doesn’t apply within the grounds of a listed building, so we check consent first.

Any work on the refrigerant circuit is recorded: the work carried out, the refrigerant involved and the quantities. Keep the records with the manual and the warranty documents, as a manufacturer or a future engineer may ask to see them.

How the visit works

Each visit runs to the same pattern: check the plan with you, protect the area, do the work, check the system and talk you through it. The visit itself takes a few days for most air-to-water installations, with air-to-air systems often quicker. Work in Stodmarsh is booked in advance at a time that suits you.

  1. It begins with your house and the heating it relies on now.
  2. Every room’s heat loss is worked out on site.
  3. We design the system, check the radiators and cylinder and look at the outdoor unit position.
  4. A fixed-price quote explains the cost, the grant position and the VAT.
  5. Installation, commissioning and MCS registration complete the job.

Advice

What we are called out for in Stodmarsh

When a home is being extended or renovated, it’s a good moment to look at heat pumps. Pipework, radiators and space for a cylinder are easier to plan while work is going on.

Any of these is worth a proper look:

  • Comparing heat pump types
  • Plans to switch to electric heating with a heat pump
  • An oil, LPG or gas boiler near the end of its life

Period properties close to Church of St Mary can suit a heat pump, though insulation and any heritage protection are checked first.

What your quote should include

  • What’s in the price and what is not
  • What paperwork you will receive afterwards
  • Whether the price is fixed or an estimate

How to choose an air conditioning engineer

Homes in Stodmarsh and heat pumps

The centre of Stodmarsh lies within the Stodmarsh Conservation Area. Draw a one-mile circle round the middle of Stodmarsh and it takes in 4 conservation areas. On the National Heritage List, around 13 entries fall within 0.5 miles of the middle of Stodmarsh; Church of St Mary (grade I) is one. So the heat pump survey asks two extra questions here: is the home listed, and is it inside a conservation area? Census 2021 figures found about 76% of households in detached or semi-detached houses. Houses typically have space for an outdoor unit and a hot water cylinder.

With Goodnestone Park about 4.4 miles south-east, it’s worth asking whether your own home is listed before planning a heat pump.

Looking after it afterwards

Aftercare is straightforward, and it helps at the next service:

  • Keep to regular servicing
  • Find out the grant position at the survey
  • Keep up with insulation and draught-proofing

Should you have questions after the install, ring 07833 053749 or drop us a line and we’ll look into it. Annual servicing helps keep the system working well.

A well-insulated home helps a heat pump, as lower heat loss means the system has less to do.

Before you call an engineer

Never try to top up, release or handle refrigerant yourself. Under the F-gas rules, engineers need their own qualifications and the company must be certified, and refrigerant lines can cause cold burns. A suspected leak is our job, not yours.

For air conditioning, cleaning the indoor unit’s filters is the main job owners can do where the manufacturer’s manual explains how. With the power off, they lift out, can be vacuumed or rinsed and must be fully dry before they go back. For a heat pump, the main owner jobs are a clear outdoor unit and sensible control settings.

Stodmarsh: your questions answered

Is Stodmarsh within the area you cover?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. Visits to smaller places are planned so the engineer arrives with what the job needs.

Is the heat pump grant available in Stodmarsh?

Stodmarsh is covered, as the scheme runs across England and Wales. For an air-to-water heat pump the amount is £7,500; an air-to-air system can get £2,500 if it replaces the fossil-fuel heating outright, meets the home’s full heating demand and isn’t an add-on to a boiler. You do not apply yourself: the MCS certified installer does, which is us.

How does the warranty work?

Warranty comes from the manufacturer and depends on the brand and product. For instance, Daikin’s standard warranty on split air conditioning is 2 years, and we explain the terms for whichever brand you choose.

Can you come out in an emergency?

Yes, any time. If something urgent happens, like water coming from a unit or a critical room overheating, call our 24/7 line and we’ll tell you what to do first.

Can you look at a system you didn’t fit?

Yes. We look at it first and tell you what we find, including anything about the original installation that needs putting right. Any work is priced before it goes ahead.

Does servicing affect my warranty?

That depends on the brand. If servicing is in the terms, missing one could affect a claim and we will tell you what your brand asks for.

Which manufacturers do you install and repair?

We work with the leading brands, from Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin and Fujitsu to Panasonic, Toshiba, LG, Samsung, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Hitachi. Tell us the make and model and we will take it from there.
