Common questions in Shorne
Is Shorne within the area you cover?
Yes. Shorne is within the area we cover across London and the South East. We’re based in East Grinstead and plan each visit so the job can be finished in one trip where possible.
Can I fit a heat pump in Shorne without planning permission?
It comes down to the building and the spot chosen for the outdoor unit. There’s a conservation area, the Shorne Village Conservation Area, close to central Shorne. Heat pumps on houses are often permitted development, but listed buildings need consent and conservation areas restrict outdoor units facing a road. Where it’s needed, we check with the planning department at Gravesham council, normally the authority for Shorne.
Can I fit air conditioning or a heat pump myself?
Anything that involves the refrigerant needs an F-Gas qualified engineer from a certified company. That’s the law, not just our preference, and manufacturers expect it for their warranty too. We’re happy to quote for the full job, supply to commissioning.
Can landlords and managing agents book you?
Yes. We work for homeowners, landlords, letting and managing agents, and businesses of every size across London and the South East. Tell us who should receive the paperwork.
Which type of heat pump is right for my home?
It depends on your home, your heating and whether you want cooling. Air-to-water can attract a £7,500 grant where eligible; air-to-air only qualifies for £2,500 under strict conditions, and we set out the options after the survey.
Will you work on another installer’s system?
Yes. Systems fitted by other companies are fine from all the leading brands. Tell us the make and model and send any paperwork you have.
Will my radiators work with a heat pump?
We find out during the survey. Where a radiator is already large enough, it stays, and any that need upsizing are set out in the quote.
How we handle air source heat pumps in Shorne
Air-to-air heat pumps can qualify for a £2,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant, but only in some cases. It has to replace the fossil-fuel heating, cover the whole heating demand, be fitted by an MCS certified installer and be in a home; adding it alongside a boiler doesn’t qualify. If the problem is choosing between air-to-water and air-to-air and working out where a cylinder could go, we can sort it out.
In a place like Shorne, some homes are listed, because permitted development doesn’t apply within the grounds of a listed building, so we check consent first.
Think of the paperwork as the system’s health record: what was fitted or found, what was done and when. It makes the next visit quicker and any warranty question simpler, so keep it safe.

For landlords and property managers
Keeping records across a portfolio is half the battle. Each visit produces a dated record, with F-Gas records wherever refrigerant work is involved, so you can show what was done and when.
We work for landlords, letting agents and managing agents as well as homeowners and businesses. Let us know who will give us access and who the records should go to and we will copy in whoever needs it.
What a heat pump looks like in Shorne
Shorne is within about 3 miles of the coast. Coastal sites are worth mentioning at the survey, as salt air affects the outdoor unit and its fixings. About 54% of homes across Shorne and its surrounding area date from 1945 to 1972, according to VOA council tax data, and the 2021 Census found about 84% of households in detached or semi-detached houses. For homes of that age, the survey checks the insulation, the radiators and the hot water setup. Houses normally have space for an outdoor unit and a hot water cylinder.
If your home is listed, like Cobham College about 2.3 miles south-west, listed building consent comes before any heat pump work. Period properties close to Church of St Peter and St Paul can suit a heat pump, though insulation and any heritage protection are checked first.

What the work involves, system by system
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme
Eligibility depends on the property and the scheme rules and we confirm it before anything is agreed.
Outdoor unit position and planning
Under permitted development, the outdoor unit must be 1.5 m³ or less, compliance with MCS 020(a), and use for more than cooling alone. Listed building curtilages are excluded.
How the visit works
The visit goes in the diary at a time that works for you, and we keep you posted if anything changes. On arrival, the engineer compares the job with the survey, your photos or the details you gave us. If something is different, we talk it through with you before carrying on. After that, it takes several days for an air-to-water system with a new cylinder, less for an air-to-air system. A few photos help us make the most of a visit to Shorne.
- First we find out about the property, the heating you have now and what you are hoping for.
- We survey the home room by room for heat loss, and check the emitters, hot water and outdoor unit position.
- The price comes back fixed and in writing, with the grant and VAT shown line by line.
- Fitting day: the outdoor unit is placed, the indoor side connected and the controls set up.
- Commissioning, MCS certification and a handover of the controls finish the job.
Preparing for the visit
- Clear a path to the units and the space around them
- Let us know if the units are on a roof, a high wall or in a locked area
- Plan for pets to be kept clear during the visit
How to get a quote
Photos are enough for some jobs; others need a visit first. Bigger systems, commercial sites and awkward pipe routes are normally surveyed on site. Either way, you get a fixed price before any work is booked.

What else we do in Shorne
What happens if it’s left?
Radiators that are too small for a heat pump’s lower flow temperature leave rooms cool. Checking and upsizing them as part of the installation avoids that. Dealing with it now is normally simpler than a breakdown later.
Whatever the property, the quote works the same way: what’s needed, how we reach it, the parts and the labour. Ask for a fixed-price quote and we will explain each part.
