Air conditioning in Shorne

Air conditioning in Shorne

Air conditioning is not only for summer: most modern splits heat too. The Energy Saving Trust recognises that air-to-air heat pumps often go by the name air conditioning, and a well-chosen system can earn its keep all year round. A lot of the calls we get from Shorne are about one room that’s too hot to sleep or work in. That’s usually a single wall-mounted split, from £1,200 + VAT.

A typical install in Shorne is an indoor unit high on an outside wall, a neat pipe run and an outdoor unit on a bracket or ground pad, with the drain run planned so it never drips where it shouldn’t.

Space outside is rarely the problem in a place like Shorne. More often it’s the walls, the electrics and the length of the pipe run that need thinking about.

For a fault on a system that may still be under warranty, send us the make, model and installation date. We’ll tell you how the manufacturer’s warranty is likely to apply before anything chargeable is done.

How it works

The first job on site is protection: sheets over the floor and any furniture nearby, and we ask before moving anything. After that, anything electrical is made safe and we start. It takes a day or more, depending on the number of rooms, the pipe routes and the access, and we tidy up before we leave. We plan the trip to Shorne around you.

  1. We survey the rooms and the outside of the property, or work from pictures and details for simple jobs.
  2. The quote is fixed and shows the equipment, where each unit goes and what’s included.
  3. The units go up and the pipework, cable and condensate drain are run neatly between them.
  4. The electrical supply is connected, and the refrigerant circuit is pressure tested and evacuated.
  5. Last comes the run-up: every mode checked, the controls explained and the paperwork left with you.

How to prepare

  • Unlock any gate, garage or side passage we need
  • Tell us about any building rules, permits or sign-in
  • Move furniture away from the wall where we will be working

Ask for a quote

VAT is set out clearly on every quote, and the rate that applies to your job is stated. Homes, businesses and different kinds of work can be treated differently for VAT, so we confirm it on the quote. To get one, call us on 07833 053749 or email us.

Advice

What we’re called out for in Shorne

Portable units are often where people start, and why they call us. A portable unit has to vent its warm air through a hose out of a window, which lets some heat back in, and its compressor sits in the room with you. With a split system, the compressor lives outside.

These are the situations we see most often:

  • Too many options and no clear advice
  • A loft conversion that is too warm to use
  • A business premises that overheats in summer

About 2.3 miles south-west stands Cobham College. Listed homes in any area need consent first, so tell us if yours is one.

Comparing quotes

  • Whether they hold F-Gas company certification, not just individual qualifications
  • Whether the manufacturer’s warranty depends on regular servicing
  • Exactly what the price includes, from supply and fitting to commissioning

Choosing an air con installer

Questions from Shorne

Will air conditioning in Shorne need planning permission?

That depends on the building and where the outdoor unit goes. There’s a conservation area, the Shorne Village Conservation Area, close to central Shorne. Since 2025, an air-to-air heat pump on a house can count as permitted development if it meets the conditions and is not used only for cooling. Listed buildings still need consent, and in a conservation area a road-facing wall or roof is not allowed under those rules. If there’s any doubt, we ask Gravesham council, which is normally the planning authority for Shorne.

Is Shorne within the area you cover?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We are based in East Grinstead and plan each visit so the job can be finished in one trip where possible.

Which type of system should I choose?

Number of rooms, space outside and how much of the unit you want to see all decide it. Ducted units need a void or loft, and cassettes need a suspended ceiling, which we check on the survey.

Can you set up regular servicing?

Yes. Maintenance contracts are part of what we do, with visits at the interval your system and the manufacturer need. Each visit is written up and F-Gas records kept where they apply.

Why does F-Gas certification matter?

Companies working on equipment that contains F gas must be certified by an approved body, and each engineer needs the right qualifications too. It’s how you know the refrigerant is being handled legally and safely.

Who is responsible for leak checks?

The F-gas rules share it between the equipment’s operator and the engineers who work on it. How often depends on the size of the refrigerant charge in tonnes of CO2 equivalent: at least yearly for 5 to under 50 tCO2e, and every 6 months for 50 to under 500 tCO2e.

How do you size the system?

Sizing is done on the survey, room by room. Too small, and it runs flat out; too big, and it switches on and off and wastes energy and we explain the output we recommend.

Keeping the system healthy

Here’s the after-treatment advice, short and simple:

  • Tell us if the unit starts to leak, rattle or show a code
  • Choose a comfortable set temperature rather than the lowest
  • Wash or vacuum the filters as the manual describes

We recommend an annual service, and some manufacturers make regular servicing a condition of their warranty. We can remind you when it’s due, so it does not get forgotten.

Set it and leave it. A moderate set temperature cools the room just as well as the lowest one, without the waste and keep doors and windows shut while it runs.

What owners can safely do

There are a few things you can safely do yourself: keeping the outdoor unit clear, checking the mode and set temperature, and the routine cleaning in the manual. Anything inside the units, the electrics and the refrigerant is engineer’s work.

Never try to top up, release or handle refrigerant yourself. Under the F-gas rules, engineers need their own qualifications and the company must be certified, and escaping refrigerant can cause cold burns. If you suspect a leak, switch the system off and call us.

What an install looks like in Shorne

At about 3 miles from the coast, Shorne is close enough for sea air to matter. That’s worth knowing for an install, as salt air speeds up corrosion on outdoor coils and fixings, so we choose the position and fixings with that in mind. Valuation Office Agency council tax records date about 54% of homes in Shorne and the neighbourhoods around it to the post-war years, 1945 to 1972, and about 84% of households live in detached or semi-detached houses, according to the 2021 Census. Homes of that age usually have cavity or solid brick walls, and we check which before planning the pipe route. A side passage or back wall normally gives the outdoor unit a home, and more than one bedroom can be cooled through a multi-split.

Homes near Church of St Peter and St Paul are a good example of where we look up the heritage status of the building before fixing anything to it.
