Air source heat pumps across Shenfield

How we handle air source heat pumps in Shenfield

Hot water from an air-to-water system is stored in a cylinder. If you have a combi boiler and no cylinder, the survey looks at where one could go. With air-to-air, hot water has to come from something else. If the problem is plans to switch to electric heating with a heat pump and choosing between air-to-water and air-to-air, we can sort it out.

Homes around Shenfield usually have space for an outdoor unit and a hot water cylinder, so the main questions are heat loss, radiators and the electrics.

Nothing is signed off by word of mouth: commissioning details and F-Gas records for a new system, a note of the fault and the fix for a repair, or a service record. Keep it with the system’s paperwork, because it helps with any later warranty question.

Why it’s worth doing now in Shenfield

The 0% VAT rate on heat pumps in homes runs until 31 March 2027, then 5% applies. It’s a date to bear in mind when planning, though the right time also depends on your home and heating. Small faults tend to grow, so it’s worth dealing with them early.

Our prices page shows typical ranges, but your price depends on the job in front of us. For a fixed-price quote, call 07833 053749 or write to us at info@aircondoctor.co.uk, and we’ll explain what it covers.

What you get with us

  • A site survey and a fixed-price quote
  • A 24/7 emergency line
  • Covering London and the South East
  • F-Gas company certification

Take a look at what air conditioning costs or our accreditations and certificates.

What happens on the day

The first job on site is protection: sheets over the floor and any furniture nearby, and we ask before moving anything. After that, anything electrical is made safe and we start. It takes several days for an air-to-water system with a new cylinder, less for an air-to-air system, and we clear up before we go. A few pictures let us plan a visit to a place like Shenfield.

  1. It starts with a conversation about the home, the existing heating and your plans.
  2. A heat loss survey works out how much heat each room needs, and we look at the radiators, the cylinder space and where the outdoor unit could go.
  3. You get a fixed-price quote, with any grant you’re eligible for and the VAT explained.
  4. The outdoor unit, the indoor equipment and the controls are installed and connected.
  5. Once it’s running correctly, the MCS certificate is issued and we show you the settings.

Preparing for the visit

  • Arrange for someone to be there to let us in
  • Give us access to the outside wall, roof or yard where the outdoor unit sits
  • Make sure we can reach the consumer unit or fuse board

Getting a quote

VAT is set out clearly on every quote, and the rate that applies to your job is stated. VAT can differ between homes and businesses and between kinds of work, so we confirm it in writing rather than guess. For a fixed-price quote, phone 07833 053749 or email us.

Keeping the system healthy

So the system stays in good health:

  • Ask about the grant before you commit
  • Don’t block radiators or indoor units with furniture
  • Book a yearly service

Handover includes the controls and how to get the best from a heat pump. Heat pumps tend to work best running steadily rather than in short bursts, and we will explain the settings for your home.

Book a service every year. Check the manufacturer’s terms, as they may include servicing conditions.

Air source heat pumps around Shenfield

The Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures date about 54% of homes in the Shenfield area to the post-war years, 1945 to 1972, and about 84% of households live in detached or semi-detached houses, according to the last census (2021). For homes of that age, the survey checks the insulation, the radiators and the hot water setup. Houses usually have space for an outdoor unit and a hot water cylinder. Historic England lists about 13 buildings and structures within half a mile of the centre of Shenfield, including Church of St Mary the Virgin (grade II*). For a heat pump, permitted development doesn’t apply within the grounds of a listed building, and in a conservation area the outdoor unit cannot go on a wall or roof facing a road, so we check with the planning team at Brentwood council, which normally handles Shenfield where needed.

Ingatestone Hall, roughly 3.8 miles north-east, is a reminder to check your home’s listing status: permitted development doesn’t cover listed buildings. Live in one of the older houses around Church of St Mary the Virgin? Expect the survey to look closely at heat loss and at the building’s planning status.

Shenfield is about 1 mile north-east of Brentwood, in Essex. Our engineers cover Shenfield for air source heat pumps, along with the rest of Essex. Across Essex, we cover 644 places, and Shenfield is one of them. The nearest of our city pages is London, around 20 miles from Shenfield.

Within a short drive, we also cover Chelmsford (10 miles north-east), Basildon (7 miles south-east), Harlow (13 miles north-west) and Canvey Island (14 miles south-east).

Your questions about air source heat pumps in Shenfield

Do you cover smaller places like Shenfield?

Yes, and the size of the place makes no difference to how we work. Send a few details and photos, and we reply the same working day.

Can I get the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant in Shenfield?

Yes, if the home and the heat pump meet the scheme’s rules: Shenfield is in England, where it applies. Air-to-water and ground source systems attract £7,500. Air-to-air gets £2,500, but only where it takes over from fossil-fuel heating and covers the whole home’s heating demand. You do not apply yourself: the MCS certified installer does, which is us.

Are you F-Gas certified?

We’re an F-Gas certified company, with NICEIC approval for electrical work and MCS certification for heat pumps. We are also Checkatrade members.

What does an air-to-water heat pump cost?

£8,000–£16,000 (0% VAT on homes) for air-to-water, before the grant. The final price depends on the heat loss survey, the radiators and the cylinder, and you get a fixed-price quote.

Which brands do you work with?

Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin, Fujitsu, Panasonic, Toshiba, LG, Samsung, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Hitachi and others. For a new system, we suggest the make and model that suit the property and tell you why.

Can you come out in an emergency?

Yes. For anything urgent, such as a system failing in a server room or water leaking from a unit, ring our 24/7 line and we’ll tell you what to do first.

Can you look at a system you didn’t fit?

Yes. We work on systems fitted by other installers as well as our own, on all the main brands. Send us the make and model, and any records you have.

What air source heat pumps can’t fix

We will not sell you work that does not address the problem, so here are the limits:

  • Tax advice on your own circumstances
  • Any gas work on the existing boiler
  • Grants for hybrid systems or replacements of low-carbon systems

Not sure which it is? You can ring us on 07833 053749 or email us and we will tell you honestly.

Where we work

  • Air-to-air heat pumps
  • Homes heated by oil, LPG or gas

From one of our customers

“Office air con broke down in the July heatwave. Called at 8am, engineer was here by noon and fixed within 2 hours. Brilliant emergency response. They now hold the service contract for the whole building.”
