Air conditioning in CM15: how it works

Think of it as diagnose, treat and sign off: the survey diagnoses what the rooms need, the installation is the treatment and commissioning is the sign-off. At sign-off, the system is tested in each mode, the controls are explained and the F-Gas records are left with you. We are often asked to deal with working from home in a room that gets too warm and uncertainty over the right type and size of system, across ducted systems, air-to-air heat pumps and multi-split systems.

Each visit runs to the same pattern: check the plan with you, put the dust sheets down, do the work, test what we’ve done and talk you through it. On site, the work takes a day for most single-room installations, with multi-split, ducted and cassette systems taking longer.

  1. First the diagnosis: a survey of the rooms, the walls, the outside and the electrics.
  2. Next, a recommendation for each room and a fixed price.
  3. The treatment: units fitted, pipework and drain routed, and the electrics installed.
  4. Before it runs, the pipework is proved tight and put under vacuum.
  5. Finally, the clean bill of health: commissioning, the controls explained and your paperwork handed over.

Ask for a quote

VAT is set out clearly on every quote, and the rate that applies to your job is stated. Homes, businesses and different kinds of work can be treated differently for VAT, so we confirm it in writing rather than guess. To get one, ring 07833 053749 or fill in the contact form.

Pilgrims Hatch: About 4.6 miles north-east stands Ingatestone Hall. Listed homes in any area need consent first, so tell us if yours is one. If your home is in one of the older streets near Saint George's church, it’s worth checking whether it’s listed or in a conservation area before an install.

Safe owner checks

Owner care supports servicing; it does not replace it. Simple care keeps the air moving through the system, but the inside of the units, the refrigerant and the electrics still need a qualified engineer.

Some faults have simple causes you can check first: check the mode, the set temperature, the remote’s batteries and the breaker. If the breaker trips a second time, leave it off and call 07833 053749 or write to us at info@aircondoctor.co.uk.

What affects the cost of air conditioning

We quote each job individually. These are the things that affect it:

  • What state the existing equipment is in
  • The electrical supply and whether a new circuit is needed
  • How far the pipework has to run, and where
  • Which make and model is being fitted or worked on

One room or a whole building, we price it on the same basis: what needs doing, how we get to it and what it needs. You’ll have a fixed price before any work starts, with VAT shown clearly.

What to send for a quote

Good pictures often save a visit. Try to include:

  • Where the outdoor unit is, or where you’d like it
  • Any previous service or F-Gas records
  • A few photos of the room and the wall the unit is on, or will go on
  • A short video of any fault, such as a noise or a flashing light

Want a quote for air conditioning? Please phone 07833 053749 or send an email with a few details about the property. We’ll explain what we’d recommend and why, then send a fixed-price quote before anything is booked.

Looking after it afterwards

Simple habits make a real difference. Our advice:

  • Do not cover or box in the outdoor unit
  • Refit filters properly after cleaning
  • Tell us if the unit starts to leak, rattle or show a code
  • Keep the handover documents somewhere safe

Before we leave, the system is commissioned and tested in each mode. We check it’s running as the manufacturer intends, then show you the controls and the timer so you know how to get the best from it.

Have the system serviced once a year. A service cleans what you can’t reach and picks up faults before they stop the system, and it keeps any warranty servicing conditions in order.

Signs you need air conditioning

Many people try a portable unit first. Portables push their warm air out through a hose in the window, so the window cannot close properly and the noisy part of the unit is in the room. With a split system, the compressor lives outside.

Keep an eye out for any of the following:

  • A loft conversion that is too warm to use
  • Rooms heated by plug-in heaters
  • A room that’s unbearable on warm days
  • An old system that needs replacing

Questions from CM15

Do you offer maintenance contracts?

Yes. Send details of the systems and how they’re used, and we’ll suggest a schedule with a fixed price. That can include the leak checks the F-gas rules require for larger systems.

Are you F-Gas certified?

F-Gas certified, NICEIC approved and MCS certified for heat pumps, plus Checkatrade membership. Our engineers also hold the individual F-gas qualifications needed to work on refrigerant.

Do you work on all makes?

We work with the leading brands, including Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin, Fujitsu, Panasonic, Toshiba, LG, Samsung, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Hitachi. Tell us the make and model and we will take it from there.

Where will you put the outdoor unit?

We agree it with you on the survey. It needs space around it to breathe and room for an engineer to service it, and walls or roofs facing a road can raise planning questions. We will tell you what to check before we fit it.

How soon will you get back to me?

You will hear from us the same working day. If it’s an emergency, ring the 24/7 line instead.

Why use an F-Gas certified company?

Certification shows a business is approved to work on systems that hold F gas refrigerant. In Great Britain, that certification is a legal requirement, not an optional extra, and we hold it.

Can I do any of the installation myself?

Not the refrigerant work. The F-gas rules require certified companies and qualified engineers for it, and a new circuit is notifiable under Part P unless a registered electrician, such as a NICEIC approved contractor, does it.
