Air source heat pumps near Roke

How we handle air source heat pumps in Roke

An air-to-water heat pump heats water to a lower temperature than a typical boiler which means some radiators may need upsizing. The survey shows which rooms are fine and which need changes, and the quote sets it out. If you’re dealing with questions about where the outdoor unit can go and questions about listed buildings or conservation areas, we can sort it out.

Space for an outdoor unit is rarely an issue near Roke, so the design comes down to heat loss, radiators and hot water.

Think of the paperwork as the system’s health record: a dated account of the work and the readings we took. If anything goes wrong later, it helps the next engineer and the manufacturer, so keep it safe.

Homes in Roke and heat pumps

VOA council tax data date about 40% of homes in the Roke area to the post-war years, 1945 to 1972, and the 2021 Census found about 85% of households in detached or semi-detached houses. For homes of that age, the survey checks the insulation, the radiators and the hot water setup. Detached and semi-detached houses usually have room for the outdoor unit and a cylinder.

Period properties close to Church of St Helen can suit a heat pump, though insulation and any heritage protection are checked first. Brightwell Manor, roughly 3.4 miles south-west, is a reminder to check your home’s listing status: permitted development doesn’t cover listed buildings.

Roke is about 7 miles east of Didcot, in Oxfordshire. Across the OX10 area, our engineers can take on air source heat pumps. Roke is one of 443 places in Oxfordshire where we work. Guildford, roughly 35 miles off, has its own page on this site.

Work in OX10 follows the same survey, fixed-price quote and written records as everywhere else we cover. Close to Roke, our area also takes in Ewelme (2 miles south-east), Brightwell Baldwin (2 miles north-east), Chalgrove (2 miles north), Britwell Salome (3 miles east) and Watlington (4 miles east). Within a short drive, we also cover Oxford (10 miles north-west), Didcot (7 miles west), Abingdon-on-Thames (8 miles west) and Thame (9 miles north-east).

When something else is needed

Air source heat pumps can’t fix everything, and we’ll tell you before any work starts. It doesn’t solve:

  • Tax rulings, which only HMRC can give
  • Draught-proofing and insulation upgrades
  • Disconnecting or servicing a gas boiler

If you’re not sure, just ring us on 07833 053749 or write to us at info@aircondoctor.co.uk and we will give you a straight answer.

Roke questions

Is planning permission needed for a heat pump in Roke?

That depends on the building and where the outdoor unit goes. The half-mile around the middle of Roke holds about 23 listed buildings and structures. Heat pumps on houses are often permitted development, but listed buildings need consent and conservation areas restrict outdoor units facing a road. Where it’s needed, we check with South Oxfordshire council, which is typically the planning authority for Roke.

Can I get the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant in Roke?

Roke is covered, as the scheme runs across England and Wales. For an air-to-water heat pump the amount is £7,500; an air-to-air system can get £2,500 if it replaces the fossil-fuel heating outright, meets the home’s full heating demand and is not an add-on to a boiler. The installer applies, and we’re MCS certified.

Are you F-Gas certified?

We hold F-Gas company certification, which the law requires for any business working on refrigerant. NICEIC approval, MCS certification for heat pumps and Checkatrade membership sit alongside it.

Can I do any of the installation myself?

Not the refrigerant work. The F-gas rules require certified companies and qualified engineers for it, and a new electrical circuit is notifiable building work unless a registered competent person does it.

How much does an air source heat pump cost?

Expect £8,000–£16,000 for an air-to-water system, with 0% VAT on homes, before the grant is taken off. Where you land depends on the size of heat pump, any radiators that need changing and the hot water cylinder. Air-to-air is priced after a survey.

Can landlords and managing agents book you?

Yes. We work for homeowners, landlords, letting and managing agents, and businesses of every size across London and the South East. Tell us who should receive the paperwork.

Who has to arrange F-Gas leak checks?

Responsibility is shared between the operator, normally whoever owns or controls the equipment, and the service technicians. The interval depends on the refrigerant charge, measured in tonnes of CO2 equivalent: at least yearly for 5 to under 50 tCO2e, and every 6 months for 50 to under 500 tCO2e.

System by system

Hot water cylinders

Existing cylinders may not be suitable for a heat pump, and we explain whether yours can stay.

Radiators and underfloor heating

At lower water temperatures, radiators give out less heat so we check them against each room’s heat loss.

How the visit works

The visit goes in the diary at a time that works for you, and we keep you posted if anything changes. On arrival, the engineer compares the job with the survey, your photos or the details you gave us. Anything unexpected is raised with you before we go further. After that, it takes from a couple of days to around a week, depending on the system and how much of the heating changes. Rural lanes and tight entrances are worth mentioning before a visit to Roke.

  1. First we talk through the property and the current system.
  2. Every room’s heat loss is worked out on site.
  3. From those figures we size the heat pump and decide on radiators, cylinder and outdoor position.
  4. You get a fixed price, with any grant and the VAT set out.
  5. Then it’s fitted, commissioned and registered with MCS.

Before we arrive

  • Let us know if the units are on a roof, a high wall or in a locked area
  • Make sure we can reach the outdoor unit, or where it will go
  • Have the make and model of any existing unit to hand

How to get a quote

Photos are the fastest route to a quote: the room or the existing unit, the outside wall or roof where the outdoor unit sits or would go, and the label on any existing unit. Add the address and what you’d like done, and many jobs can be priced from that.
