Air source heat pumps for Ripple

Owner checks or an engineer?

There are a few things you can safely do yourself: keeping the outdoor unit clear, checking the mode and set temperature, and the routine cleaning in the manual. Anything inside the units, the electrics and the refrigerant is engineer’s work.

On air conditioning, the filters in the indoor unit are normally the one part owners can clean where the manufacturer’s manual explains how. They come out, get a gentle clean and go back only when they’re dry. On a heat pump, the equivalent is keeping the outdoor unit clear and checking the controls.

Air source heat pumps for homes and businesses in Ripple

Many air source heat pumps can be installed as permitted development in England, without a planning application. Conditions include a maximum outdoor unit size of 1.5 m³, compliance with MCS 020(a), use for more than cooling alone and a site outside the curtilage of a listed building. We look at the planning position for your home during the survey. The work covers air-to-air heat pumps, radiator systems and hot water cylinders, and people most often call us about questions about where the outdoor unit can go and comparing heat pump types.

Space for an outdoor unit is rarely an issue near Ripple, so the design comes down to heat loss, radiators and hot water.

Some manufacturers make regular servicing by a qualified engineer a condition of their warranty. Where yours does, a regular service with us keeps that side in order, and every service is written up.

What we do, step by step

Testing is the last part of the visit wherever the system can be switched on. Then we explain what was done and answer your questions, and anything that needs attention later is pointed out. All told, the work takes from a couple of days to around a week, depending on the system and how much of the heating changes. For a village like Ripple, tell us about narrow lanes, gates and parking when you book.

  1. First we find out about the property, the heating you have now and what you’re hoping for.
  2. On the visit we calculate what every room loses on a cold day, then check the radiators, room for a cylinder and outdoor unit options.
  3. We send a fixed-price quote that shows the equipment, the grant position and the VAT.
  4. We fit the outdoor unit and connect it to the heating, hot water and controls.
  5. Once it’s running correctly, the MCS certificate is issued and we show you the settings.

Preparing for the visit

  • Mention any parking restrictions near the property
  • Find the manual or the paperwork for the system, if you have it
  • Tell us about access, such as roof hatches, high walls or locked plant areas

Air source heat pumps cannot fix everything, and we will tell you before we start. It does not solve:

  • Any gas work on the existing boiler
  • Planning approval where permitted development does not apply
  • Promising eligibility for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme

FAQs for Ripple

Is the coast a problem for outdoor units in Ripple?

It can. Ripple is within about 3 miles of the coast, and salt air speeds up corrosion on outdoor units. We site outdoor units out of the worst of the sea wind where possible and can suggest models with corrosion protection where the manufacturer offers it.

Do you cover smaller places like Ripple?

We do. Villages and hamlets get the same service as the bigger towns. A few photos and the postcode are enough to get things started.

Do I need new radiators for a heat pump?

It depends on each radiator and the room it heats. Heat pumps run at lower flow temperatures, so radiators give out less heat, and the survey checks each one.

Do I need planning permission for a heat pump?

Often not in England, as many heat pumps on houses are permitted development provided the conditions are met. These include an outdoor unit of no more than 1.5 m³, compliance with MCS 020(a), not being used solely for cooling and not being within the curtilage of a listed building.

Is there a Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant for air-to-air?

It can, as long as the system takes over the heating completely. The £2,500 applies when it replaces the fossil-fuel heating, covers the full heating demand, is fitted by an MCS certified installer and serves a home; as an add-on to a boiler it does not qualify.

How much does an air source heat pump cost?

£8,000–£16,000 (0% VAT on homes) for air-to-water, before the grant. The final price depends on the heat loss survey, the radiators and the cylinder, and you get a fixed-price quote.

Can I do the refrigerant work myself?

Anything that involves the refrigerant needs an F-Gas qualified engineer from a certified company. That is a legal requirement, and manufacturers expect it for their warranty too. We can quote for the whole job, from supply to commissioning.

Heat pumps in Ripple: local notes

Ripple is within about 3 miles of the coast. Near the coast, we choose the outdoor unit position with salt-laden wind in mind. Ripple’s centre falls inside a designated conservation area. Historic England lists about 13 buildings and structures within half a mile of the centre of Ripple, including Church of St Mary the Virgin (grade II*). Where a home is affected, the outdoor unit position is settled with the planning team at Dover council, which typically handles Ripple before the heat pump design is finished. About 65% of households live in detached or semi-detached houses, according to the 2021 Census. Finding room for the outdoor unit and a cylinder is seldom a problem in homes like these.

With Walmer Castle about 1.9 miles east, it’s worth asking whether your own home is listed before planning a heat pump. Period properties close to Church of St Mary the Virgin can suit a heat pump, though insulation and any heritage protection are checked first.

Looking after your system

So the system stays in good health:

  • Look at insulation alongside the heat pump
  • Find out the grant position at the survey
  • File the MCS certificate safely

If you were eligible for a grant, we handle the application and keep you updated since the grant goes through the installer.

Leave space around the outdoor unit. Airflow is what it runs on so keep it unobstructed.

A customer’s words
