How we handle air source heat pumps in Ripe
A heat pump takes heat from the outside air and moves it into your home, using electricity to drive the process. The technology is close to air conditioning, which is why we install both, and air-to-air heat pumps are sometimes simply called air conditioning. We’re often asked to deal with plans to switch to electric heating with a heat pump and working out where a cylinder could go, across underfloor heating, air-to-water heat pumps and hot water cylinders.
Older and listed homes in villages like Ripe need extra care, because permitted development doesn’t apply within the grounds of a listed building, so consent comes first.
Each manufacturer sets its own warranty period. Daikin, for example, gives a standard 2 years on split air conditioning, with longer extensions only on its air-to-water heat pumps. For any other brand, we explain the manufacturer’s terms on your quote.

Aftercare tips
Think of this as the after-treatment advice, in brief:
- Seal draughts where you can
- Don’t block radiators or indoor units with furniture
- Book a yearly service
In cold, damp weather the outdoor unit runs a defrost cycle from time to time. You might see steam or hear the unit change note, and that’s normal.
Let the heat pump run steadily rather than switching it on and off as explained at handover.

What a heat pump looks like in Ripe
About 70% of households live in detached or semi-detached houses, according to Census 2021 figures. Detached and semi-detached houses usually have room for the outdoor unit and a cylinder. The centre of Ripe lies within the Ripe Conservation Area. Draw a one-mile circle round the middle of Ripe and it takes in 2 conservation areas. Listed buildings are part of the picture here: about 18 within half a mile of the centre, such as The Parish Church of St John the Baptist (grade I). That affects heat pumps: listed buildings need consent, and conservation areas limit where the outdoor unit can go under permitted development. Where needed, we check with the planning team at Wealden council, which usually handles Ripe.
Period properties close to The Parish Church of St John the Baptist can suit a heat pump, though insulation and any heritage protection are checked first. Historic houses such as Charleston Farmhouse, about 2.3 miles south-west, are a reminder that listed homes need consent before a heat pump goes in.

The process
Everything the job needs comes with us, from tools and test equipment to ladders and dust sheets. You only need to give us clear access to the units, or their planned positions, and to the fuse board. The visit takes from a couple of days to around a week, depending on the system and how much of the heating changes. For a village like Ripe, tell us about narrow lanes, gates and parking when you book.
- We talk through your home, your current heating and what you want from a heat pump.
- On the visit we calculate what every room loses on a cold day, then check the radiators, room for a cylinder and outdoor unit options.
- The price comes back fixed and in writing, with the grant and VAT shown line by line.
- Fitting day: the outdoor unit is placed, the indoor side connected and the controls set up.
- The system is commissioned and registered under MCS, and we show you how to use it.
How to prepare
- Name a contact who can meet us at the agreed time
- Keep pets out of the rooms we’re working in
- Mention any parking restrictions near the property

Advice
Questions from Ripe
Can I get the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant in Ripe?
Ripe is covered, as the scheme runs across England and Wales. Air-to-water and ground source systems attract £7,500. Air-to-air gets £2,500, but only where it takes over from fossil-fuel heating and covers the whole home’s heating demand. You don’t apply yourself: the MCS certified installer does, which is us.
Will you come out to Ripe?
We do. Villages and hamlets get the same service as the bigger towns. Visits to smaller places are planned so the engineer arrives with what the job needs.
Can landlords and managing agents book you?
Yes. We work for homeowners, landlords, letting and managing agents, and businesses of every size across London and the South East. Let us know who the records should go to.
Do you work on all makes?
We work with the leading brands, from Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin and Fujitsu to Panasonic, Toshiba, LG, Samsung, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Hitachi. Send us the make and model if you have it.
What accreditations do you have?
We are an F-Gas certified company, with NICEIC approval for electrical work and MCS certification for heat pumps. We are members of Checkatrade too.
Can I fit air conditioning or a heat pump myself?
Not the refrigerant work. The F-gas rules require certified companies and qualified engineers for it, and a new circuit is notifiable under Part P unless a registered electrician, such as a NICEIC approved contractor, does it.
What does F-Gas certified mean?
Certification shows a business is approved to work on systems that hold F gas refrigerant. In Great Britain, that certification is a legal requirement, not an optional extra, and AirCon Doctor is certified.
