Air source heat pumps for homes and businesses in Selmeston
As an MCS certified installer, we fit air source heat pumps for homes in Selmeston and the rest of East Sussex. There are two kinds: air-to-water, which heats radiators or underfloor heating and your hot water, and air-to-air, which warms rooms through indoor units and can also cool. We help you work out which suits your home. The work covers hot water cylinders, homes heated by oil, LPG or gas and radiator systems, and common reasons people get in touch are choosing between air-to-water and air-to-air and ageing boilers that will need replacing.
For a home around Selmeston that is off mains gas and heated by oil or LPG, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme adds an extra £1,500 until March 2027 for an air source or ground source heat pump, on top of the £7,500.
For a fault on a system that may still be under warranty, send us the make, model and installation date. We’ll tell you how the manufacturer’s warranty is likely to apply before any chargeable work goes ahead.

Air source heat pumps around Selmeston
Selmeston’s centre falls inside the Selmeston Conservation Area. In the mile around Selmeston’s centre, 2 conservation areas have been designated. On the National Heritage List, around 15 entries fall within 0.5 miles of the middle of Selmeston; Green House (grade II) is one. Where a home is affected, the outdoor unit position is settled with the local planning authority (usually Wealden council) before the heat pump design is finished. About 55% of homes in Selmeston and the neighbourhoods around it date from 1945 to 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax records, and the last census (2021) found about 77% of households in detached or semi-detached houses. Homes of that age often have cavity walls that may or may not be insulated, which the survey checks. Houses typically have space for an outdoor unit and a hot water cylinder.
Charleston Farmhouse, roughly 1.2 miles west, is a reminder to check your home’s listing status: permitted development does not cover listed buildings. Period properties close to The Parish Church of St Mary can suit a heat pump, though insulation and any heritage protection are checked first.

What we do, step by step
Protection comes first: dust sheets over floors and furniture near the work, and we ask before moving anything. After that, anything electrical is made safe and we start. The work on site takes anything from a couple of days for air-to-air to the best part of a week for air-to-water with radiator changes, and we clear up before we go. Pictures of the space and where the outdoor unit could go let us plan the work in Selmeston.
- We find out about your home and the heating you have now.
- Every room’s heat loss is worked out on site.
- From those figures we size the heat pump and decide on radiators, cylinder and outdoor position.
- You get a fixed price, with any grant and the VAT set out.
- We install, commission and register the system under MCS.
Before we arrive
- Unlock any gate, garage or side passage we need
- Mention any managing agent or landlord rules we need to follow
- Keep pets and children away from the work area

Advice
Safe owner checks
There are a few things you can safely do yourself: keeping the outdoor unit clear, checking the mode and set temperature, and the routine cleaning in the manual. Opening up the units, the electrics and the refrigerant circuit are a job for us.
Owner care supports servicing; it does not replace it. Clean filters and a clear outdoor unit help the system run as it should, but the inside of the units, the refrigerant and the electrics still need a qualified engineer.
What air source heat pumps cannot fix
Air source heat pumps can’t fix everything, and we’d rather say so up front. It won’t put right:
- Getting planning permission or listed building consent on your behalf
- Draught-proofing and insulation upgrades
- Disconnecting or servicing a gas boiler
If in doubt, call 07833 053749, or email if that’s easier and we’ll say what we think.

Selmeston questions
Can I get the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant in Selmeston?
Selmeston is covered, as the scheme runs across England and Wales. It gives £7,500 towards an air-to-water or ground source heat pump, or £2,500 towards an air-to-air heat pump that replaces the fossil-fuel heating and meets the whole home’s heating need. As an MCS certified installer, we apply for it on your behalf.
Do you cover smaller places like Selmeston?
Yes, and the size of the place makes no difference to how we work. We are based in East Grinstead and plan each visit so the job can be finished in one trip where possible.
Do you work on systems someone else installed?
Yes. We start with a proper look and tell you honestly what we find, including any issues with how it was fitted. You get a fixed price before any work goes ahead.
Should I choose air-to-water or air-to-air?
The right choice depends on the property and what you need. The grant is £7,500 for eligible air-to-water systems and £2,500 for air-to-air in limited cases, and we set out the options after the survey.
What warranty do I get?
Warranty comes from the manufacturer and depends on the brand and product. For example, Daikin’s standard warranty on split air conditioning is 2 years and we explain the terms for your brand on the quote.
Why does F-Gas certification matter?
Companies working on equipment that contains F gas must be certified by an approved body, and the engineers need their own qualifications. It means the refrigerant in your system is handled legally.
Who is responsible for leak checks?
The F-gas rules share it between the equipment’s operator and the engineers who work on it. How often depends on the size of the refrigerant charge in tonnes of CO2 equivalent: at least yearly for 5 to under 50 tCO2e, and every 6 months for 50 to under 500 tCO2e.
After we have gone
Once we have finished, these simple steps help:
- Check what your manufacturer’s warranty asks of you
- Leave space around the outdoor unit
- Find out the grant position at the survey
Where we applied for a Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant, we keep you informed through the process since the grant goes through the installer.
Keep radiators and indoor units unobstructed, as the system relies on them giving out heat.
A customer’s words
“Office air con broke down in the July heatwave. Called at 8am, engineer was here by noon and fixed within 2 hours. Brilliant emergency response. They now hold the service contract for the whole building.”
