Air source heat pumps in Berwick, done properly

Hot water from an air-to-water system is stored in a cylinder. If you have a combi boiler and no cylinder, the survey looks at where one could go. Air-to-air systems don’t heat hot water, so you’ll need another way to do that. We’re often asked to deal with radiators that may be too small for a heat pump and an oil, LPG or gas boiler near the end of its life, across air-to-air heat pumps, radiator systems and homes heated by oil, LPG or gas.

In a place like Berwick, some homes are listed, because permitted development does not apply within the grounds of a listed building, so we check consent first.

Equipment warranty comes from the manufacturer, on its own terms, and we explain those terms on your quote. Each brand sets its own conditions, and we’re happy to talk you through them.

Your questions about air source heat pumps in Berwick

Does the Boiler Upgrade Scheme cover homes in Berwick?

Yes, if the home and the heat pump meet the scheme’s rules: Berwick is in England, where it applies. It gives £7,500 towards an air-to-water or ground source heat pump, or £2,500 towards an air-to-air heat pump that replaces the fossil-fuel heating and meets the whole home’s heating need. As an MCS certified installer, we apply for it on your behalf.

Is planning permission needed for a heat pump in Berwick?

There’s no single answer: the building and the outdoor unit position decide it. The half-mile around the middle of Berwick holds about 5 listed buildings and structures. A heat pump on a house can be permitted development if it meets the conditions, including the MCS noise check, but not within the grounds of a listed building, and in a conservation area the outdoor unit cannot face a road. Where necessary, we check with Wealden council, which is typically the planning authority for Berwick.

Do you work on systems someone else installed?

Yes. We work on systems fitted by other installers as well as our own from all the leading brands. Send us the make and model, and any records you have.

Do I get paperwork after the visit?

Yes. Every visit is written up, including F-Gas records for any refrigerant work. File them with the system’s paperwork.

Will you make a mess?

We start with protection: sheets over the floor and nearby furniture. Any drilling is agreed with you first, and we clear up the dust and offcuts before we leave.

Is there a survey before the work?

Yes. We always look before we price, on a survey, or from your pictures and details where the job is simple. A fixed-price quote follows.

Are you F-Gas certified?

F-Gas certified, NICEIC approved and MCS certified for heat pumps, and we are Checkatrade members. Engineers who handle refrigerant hold their own F-gas qualifications as well.

How it works

On the day, we arrive at the time agreed with you and check the plan with you first. Floors and furniture near the work are covered with dust sheets, and the electrics are made safe before any panel comes off. On site, it takes from a couple of days to around a week, depending on the system and how much of the heating changes. Visits to Berwick are agreed with you in advance and planned so the job can be finished in one trip where possible.

  1. We start with your plans and the property.
  2. The survey checks heat loss, emitters, hot water and the outdoor unit position.
  3. We recommend air-to-water or air-to-air and check the grant position.
  4. The system is installed and connected to the controls.
  5. After commissioning, you get the MCS certificate and a handover.

How to prepare

  • Let us know if the building has a permit or sign-in process
  • Arrange for someone to be there to let us in
  • Make sure we can reach the outdoor unit, or where it will go

Getting a price

The quickest way to a quote is to send pictures: the room or the existing unit, the outside wall or roof where the outdoor unit sits or would go, and the label on any existing unit. Tell us the address and what you need, and many jobs can be priced from that.

Advice

Heat pumps in Berwick: local notes

The Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures date about 45% of homes in the Berwick area to the post-war years, 1945 to 1972, and about 70% of households live in detached or semi-detached houses, according to Census 2021 figures. Homes of that age often have cavity walls that may or may not be insulated, which the survey checks. Houses usually have space for an outdoor unit and a hot water cylinder.

If your home is one of the older properties near The Parish Church of St Mary, the survey checks whether it’s listed or in a conservation area before the outdoor unit position is chosen. Charleston Farmhouse, roughly 2.2 miles west, is a reminder to check your home’s listing status: permitted development does not cover listed buildings.

Aftercare tips

After the visit, a few habits help:

  • Keep to regular servicing
  • Ask about the grant before you commit
  • Keep the outdoor unit clear all year

After commissioning, the installation is registered under MCS and you receive the certificate. Keep it with the manufacturer’s paperwork, as you may need it later.

Heat pumps prefer steady, low-temperature running, using the settings agreed at handover.

System by system

Radiators and underfloor heating

At lower water temperatures, radiators give out less heat, and the survey checks each one.

Outdoor unit position and planning

Permitted development conditions in England include an outdoor unit of no more than 1.5 m³ and must meet MCS 020(a) and not be used solely for cooling. It can’t be within the curtilage of a listed building.

What owners can safely do

Some faults have simple causes you can check first: is the system in the right mode, is the set temperature sensible, are the remote’s batteries working and has the breaker tripped. If a breaker trips again after you reset it, leave it off and phone us on 07833 053749 or fill in the contact form.

On air conditioning, the filters in the indoor unit are normally the one part owners can clean where the manufacturer’s manual explains how. They come out, get a gentle clean and go back only when they’re dry. On a heat pump, the equivalent is keeping the outdoor unit clear and checking the controls.

What a customer said

“Excellent service from start to finish. Two wall-mounted units installed in our home. Clean, tidy work: they protected all the floors and left no mess. The systems work brilliantly. Would highly recommend.”
