Air source heat pumps in Puddle Dock

Air source heat pumps in Puddle Dock, done properly

For an air-to-water heat pump, the price is £8,000–£16,000 (0% VAT on homes), before the grant. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme can provide £7,500 towards an eligible air-to-water system in England and Wales and the installer makes the application. Eligibility depends on the property, so we confirm it before anything is agreed. The work covers underfloor heating, radiator systems and air-to-air heat pumps, and common reasons people get in touch are checking whether planning permission is needed and radiators that may be too small for a heat pump.

A terrace in Puddle Dock shares walls with its neighbours, which helps keep heat in, as long as there’s a sensible spot for the outdoor unit and its noise is checked against the MCS planning standard.

Some manufacturers make regular servicing by a qualified engineer a condition of their warranty. If that applies to your system, booking the service on time keeps the record straight, and every service is written up.

Puddle Dock questions

Can I get the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant in Puddle Dock?

Yes, the scheme covers homes in England, including Puddle Dock, if they qualify. Whether your home qualifies, and for how much, depends on the type of heat pump and the heating it replaces. You do not apply yourself: the MCS certified installer does, which is us.

Can you do air source heat pumps in Puddle Dock?

We do: Puddle Dock falls inside our working area. Tell us a little about the job and we will take it from there.

Do you work on all makes?

The main ones, including Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin, Fujitsu, Panasonic, Toshiba, LG, Samsung, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Hitachi. For a new system, we suggest the make and model that suit the property and explain why.

Can I fit air conditioning or a heat pump myself?

Anything that involves the refrigerant needs an F-Gas qualified engineer from a certified company. That is a legal requirement, and it also matters for the manufacturer’s warranty. We are happy to quote for the full job, supply to commissioning.

Do I get paperwork after the visit?

Yes. You get a written record of each visit, and any work on the refrigerant circuit goes in the F-Gas records. File them with the system’s paperwork.

How much does an air source heat pump cost?

Expect £8,000–£16,000 for an air-to-water system, with 0% VAT on homes, before the grant is taken off. The heat pump size, radiator changes and the cylinder decide where in that range you are, and air-to-air systems are priced after a survey.

Can you come out in an emergency?

Yes. Our emergency line runs 24/7 for problems that can’t wait for a planned visit. Call 07833 053749 and tell us what’s happened.

How the visit works

We book the visit for a day and time that suit you, and we let you know if plans need to move. On arrival, the engineer compares the job with the survey, your pictures or the details you gave us. Anything unexpected is raised with you before we go further. From there, the work takes anything from a couple of days for air-to-air to the best part of a week for air-to-water with radiator changes. A few photos of the room, the outside wall and the fuse board help us plan a job in Puddle Dock.

  1. First we find out about the property, the heating you have now and what you’re hoping for.
  2. The survey measures heat loss room by room and looks at radiators, hot water and the best spot for the outdoor unit.
  3. You get a fixed-price quote, with any grant you’re eligible for and the VAT explained.
  4. The outdoor unit, the indoor equipment and the controls are installed and connected.
  5. Commissioning, MCS certification and a handover of the controls finish the job.

Before we arrive

  • Have the make and model of any existing unit to hand
  • Tell us about any building rules, permits or sign-in
  • Tell us about parking and loading

How to get a quote

Here’s what helps us quote: where the property is and what kind of building it is, pictures of the rooms or units, the make and model of any existing system and any symptoms, from error codes to drips. Then call 07833 053749 or send an email.

Advice

What the work involves, system by system

Outdoor unit position and planning

Under permitted development, the outdoor unit must be 1.5 m³ or less and must meet MCS 020(a) and not be used solely for cooling. It cannot be within the curtilage of a listed building.

VAT on heat pumps

For air-to-air systems, HMRC’s view depends on the product and the situation and the VAT is confirmed on your quote.

Heat pumps in Puddle Dock: local notes

About 80% of homes in the Puddle Dock area date from 1945 to 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax records, and about 60% of households live in detached or semi-detached houses, according to the 2021 Census. For homes of that age, the survey checks the insulation, the radiators and the hot water setup. Houses usually have space for an outdoor unit and a hot water cylinder. London homes can be short of space for an outdoor unit and cylinder, which affects the choice of heat pump.

Older homes near Moor Lane Church may need extra checks for planning and heat loss before a heat pump is designed. If your home is listed, like Hare Hall about 4.1 miles north-west, listed building consent comes before any heat pump work.

Looking after your system

A little care keeps the system in better shape. Our advice:

  • Keep radiators clear
  • Let the heat pump run steadily, as set up at handover
  • Book a yearly service

After commissioning, the installation is registered under MCS and you receive the certificate. File it with the warranty documents for future reference.

Let the heat pump run steadily rather than switching it on and off, using the settings agreed at handover.

Owner checks or an engineer?

Write down what you notice: an error code, a new noise, a drip, a smell or a change in how well the system heats or cools. It helps us diagnose quickly, and a photo or a short video of the display is even better.

Never try to top up, release or handle refrigerant yourself. Under the F-gas rules, engineers need their own qualifications and the company must be certified, and refrigerant lines can cause cold burns. A suspected leak is our job, not yours.

A customer’s words

“Office air con broke down in the July heatwave. Called at 8am, engineer was here by noon and fixed within 2 hours. Brilliant emergency response. They now hold the service contract for the whole building.”
