Air source heat pumps across New Town

How we handle air source heat pumps in New Town

We install air source heat pumps in New Town and across Oxfordshire, and we’re MCS certified. Air-to-water systems feed your radiators or underfloor heating and hot water cylinder, while air-to-air systems heat rooms directly through indoor units and can cool them too. We’ll explain which type fits your home and why. The work covers homes heated by oil, LPG or gas, air-to-air heat pumps and hot water cylinders, and common reasons people get in touch are not knowing whether a grant applies and finding a place for the outdoor unit.

Space for an outdoor unit is rarely an issue near New Town, so the design comes down to heat loss, radiators and hot water.

Equipment warranty comes from the manufacturer, on its own terms, and we explain those terms on your quote. Each brand sets its own conditions, and we’re happy to talk you through them.

What a heat pump looks like in New Town

Census 2021 figures found about 73% of households in detached or semi-detached houses. Detached and semi-detached houses usually have room for the outdoor unit and a cylinder.

With Basildon Park about 1.4 miles north, it’s worth asking whether your own home is listed before planning a heat pump. Period properties close to St Stephen's Church can suit a heat pump, though insulation and any heritage protection are checked first.

New Town is about 7 miles west of Reading, in Oxfordshire. Whatever kind of property you have in New Town, our engineers can help with air source heat pumps. We also work in Guildford, about 29 miles from New Town.

From Wakemans and Pangbourne Road to the smaller roads in between, the whole area is covered. Work in RG8 follows the same survey, fixed-price quote and written records as everywhere else we cover. Common questions in New Town

Will a heat pump in New Town need planning permission?

There’s no single answer: the building and the outdoor unit position decide it. The half-mile around the middle of New Town holds about 6 listed buildings and structures. Heat pumps on houses are often permitted development, but listed buildings need consent and conservation areas restrict outdoor units facing a road. Where it’s needed, we check with West Berkshire council, which is normally the planning authority for New Town.

Can I get the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant in New Town?

Yes, the scheme covers homes in England, including New Town, if they qualify. The amount depends on the type of heat pump, and the survey confirms which applies. The installer applies, and we’re MCS certified.

Which accreditations do you hold?

We’re an F-Gas certified company, with NICEIC approval for electrical work and MCS certification for heat pumps. We’re members of Checkatrade too.

Do you work on all makes?

We install and work on the leading makes, from Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin and Fujitsu to Panasonic, Toshiba, LG, Samsung, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Hitachi. Send us the make and model if you have it.

Do you work in New Town?

Yes. We work in New Town and the rest of Oxfordshire, as part of our area across London and the South East. To book, give us a ring on 07833 053749 or fill in the contact form.

What does an air-to-water heat pump cost?

Air-to-water installations cost £8,000–£16,000 (0% VAT on homes), before the grant. Air-to-air systems are priced after a survey, with the VAT confirmed on your quote.

Who has to arrange F-Gas leak checks?

Responsibility is shared between the operator, typically whoever owns or controls the equipment, and the service technicians. How often depends on the size of the refrigerant charge in tonnes of CO2 equivalent: at least yearly for 5 to under 50 tCO2e, and every 6 months for 50 to under 500 tCO2e.

Owner checks or an engineer?

Don’t move, re-route or disconnect units or pipework yourself. Moving a unit involves the refrigerant circuit, so it needs an F-Gas qualified engineer, and the electrical side needs a competent person. Ask us to quote for a move instead.

Never try to top up, release or handle refrigerant yourself. The law requires anyone working on equipment containing F gas to hold the right qualifications, and the company to be certified, and refrigerant lines can cause cold burns. A suspected leak is our job, not yours.

What air source heat pumps cannot fix

In fairness, some problems need a different answer:

  • A grant for a home that does not meet the scheme rules
  • Improving the building’s insulation
  • Tax rulings, which only HMRC can give

Not sure which it is? You can call us on 07833 053749 or write to us at info@aircondoctor.co.uk and we will tell you honestly.

What the work covers

  • Radiator systems
  • Hot water cylinders
  • Air-to-water heat pumps
  • Homes heated by oil, LPG or gas
  • Air-to-air heat pumps
  • Underfloor heating

How the visit works

The first job on site is protection: sheets over the floor and any furniture nearby, and we ask before moving anything. After that, anything electrical is made safe and we start. The work on site takes a few days for most air-to-water installations, with air-to-air systems often quicker, and we tidy up before we leave. Photos of the room and the outside of the property help us plan a visit to New Town.

  1. It begins with your house and the heating it relies on now.
  2. Every room’s heat loss is worked out on site.
  3. We design the system, check the radiators and cylinder and look at the outdoor unit position.
  4. You get a fixed price, with any grant and the VAT set out.
  5. We install, commission and register the system under MCS.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Give us access to the outside wall, roof or yard where the outdoor unit sits
  • Make sure someone can let us in at the agreed time
  • Let us know if the units are on a roof, a high wall or in a locked area

Getting a price

To help us quote: where the property is and what kind of building it is, a few photos, the make and model of any existing system and anything you’ve noticed, such as an error code or a noise. Once you have those, phone 07833 053749.

What happens if it’s left?

Replacing a boiler in a hurry when it breaks leaves little time to consider a heat pump. Planning ahead gives time for the heat loss survey, the design and the grant application while the old heating still works. Booking before summer means the work in New Town is done before the hot weather.

What you pay depends on the type of system and how many units are involved, how easy the units are to reach and what the work involves. You get a fixed price before any work starts, so you know where you stand.

Why book with us

  • Diagnosis first, then a fixed price
  • MCS certification for heat pump work
