About our air source heat pumps in Leigh
Air-to-air heat pumps can qualify for a £2,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant, but only in some cases. The system must replace the existing fossil-fuel heating and meet the home’s full heating demand, it must be installed by an MCS certified installer, and it must be in a home; adding it alongside a boiler doesn’t qualify. If you are dealing with questions about where the outdoor unit can go and choosing between air-to-water and air-to-air, we can help.
In a place like Leigh, some homes are listed, because permitted development doesn’t apply within the grounds of a listed building, so consent comes first.
If a fault appears while the equipment is under the manufacturer’s warranty, tell us the make, model and installation date. We will explain how the manufacturer’s terms are likely to apply before any chargeable work goes ahead.

After we have gone
So the system stays in good health:
- Keep up with insulation and draught-proofing
- Leave space around the outdoor unit
- Use the settings explained at handover
Handover includes the controls and how to get the best from a heat pump. Heat pumps tend to work best running steadily rather than in short bursts so we set the controls up with you.
Keep the outdoor unit clear of leaves, plants and stored items. Airflow is what it runs on, so keep it clear all year.

Air source heat pumps around Leigh
About 45% of homes in and around Leigh date from 1945 to 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax records, and Census 2021 figures found about 72% of households in detached or semi-detached houses. Whether the walls and loft have been insulated makes a real difference to the heat pump size for homes of that period. Finding room for the outdoor unit and a cylinder is seldom a problem in homes like these.
Live in one of the older houses around Church of St Bartholomew? Expect the survey to look closely at heat loss and at the building’s planning status. Sizing comes from the heat each room loses on a cold day, not from the size of the old boiler.

Jobs in RH2 are looked at, quoted and booked the same way as anywhere else. From Church Road, Smalls Hill Road and The Glebe to the smaller roads in between, the whole area is covered. When something else is needed
An honest diagnosis matters more to us than a booking, so here’s what air source heat pumps will not do:
- Tax advice on your own circumstances
- Any gas work on the existing boiler
- Planning approval where permitted development does not apply
If you’re not sure, just call 07833 053749 or write to us at info@aircondoctor.co.uk and we will give you a straight answer.
What the work covers
- Homes heated by oil, LPG or gas
- Underfloor heating
- Hot water cylinders
- Air-to-water heat pumps
- Radiator systems
- Air-to-air heat pumps
How it works
Our engineers arrive at the time agreed with you and run through the plan before anything else. Floors and furniture near the work are covered with dust sheets, and the electrics are made safe before any panel comes off. The work itself takes from a couple of days to around a week, depending on the system and how much of the heating changes. A few pictures help us make the most of a visit to Leigh.
- We find out about your home and the heating you have now.
- A heat loss survey is carried out, room by room.
- From those figures we size the heat pump and decide on radiators, cylinder and outdoor position.
- A fixed-price quote explains the cost, the grant position and the VAT.
- Then it’s fitted, commissioned and registered with MCS.
Preparing for the visit
- Let us know where the consumer unit is
- Keep pets and children away from the work area
- Let us know where we can park and unload
Getting a price
Our prices page gives typical ranges, but your quote is based on your job, because no two buildings, rooms or systems are the same. Once we’ve looked at the job, from photos or on a survey, you get a fixed price. To get going, call us on 07833 053749 or email us.

Leigh: your questions answered
Is the heat pump grant available in Leigh?
Leigh is in England, where the Boiler Upgrade Scheme runs. The grant is £7,500 for an air source (air-to-water) heat pump and £2,500 for an air-to-air system that replaces the existing fossil-fuel heating. The installer applies, and we are MCS certified.
Will a heat pump in Leigh need planning permission?
It comes down to the building and the spot chosen for the outdoor unit. The centre of Leigh is in the Leigh Conservation Area. The permitted development rules for heat pumps leave out listed buildings and stop outdoor units going on road-facing walls or roofs in conservation areas. Anything outside the rules needs an application, and we raise it with the local planning authority (for Leigh, typically Mole Valley council) first.
Do you work on all makes?
We install and work on the leading makes, from Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin and Fujitsu to Panasonic, Toshiba, LG, Samsung, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Hitachi. Send us the make and model if you have it.
Is Leigh in your area?
Yes. We cover Leigh and across Surrey, within the London and South East area we cover. To book, phone 07833 053749, or email if that’s easier.
Which accreditations do you hold?
AirCon Doctor is an F-Gas certified company, with NICEIC approval for electrical work and MCS certification for heat pumps. We’re also Checkatrade members.
What does F-Gas certified mean?
The law says any company working on equipment containing F gas has to be certified, and each engineer needs the right qualifications too. It means the refrigerant in your system is handled legally.
Who has to arrange F-Gas leak checks?
The operator of the equipment, working with qualified engineers. Systems below 5 tCO2e fall outside the set leak check intervals, while larger ones need checks at least every 12 months, or every 6 months from 50 tCO2e. We can tell you which band your system falls into.
What a customer said
