Air source heat pumps in Hythe, done properly

We install air source heat pumps in Hythe and across Hampshire, and we’re MCS certified. There are two kinds: air-to-water, which heats radiators or underfloor heating and your hot water, and air-to-air, which warms rooms through indoor units and can also cool. We’ll explain which type fits your home and why. Common call-outs are for questions about listed buildings or conservation areas and finding a place for the outdoor unit, on homes heated by oil, LPG or gas, underfloor heating and air-to-water heat pumps.

Around Hythe, most people asking about heat pumps have a gas boiler now. We survey the heat loss, radiators, hot water and the outdoor unit position, then design and quote.

For a fault on a system that may still be under warranty, send us the make, model and installation date. We will tell you how the manufacturer’s warranty is likely to apply before any chargeable work goes ahead.

Landlords, agents and facilities managers

Landlords, letting agents and managing agents book us, not only the people who live or work in the property. Tell us who the contact on site is and who should receive the paperwork and we will copy in whoever needs it.

If you look after several properties, we can plan visits across the portfolio and price them together. Every address has its own paperwork, so the files stay tidy.

Hythe questions

Is the coast a problem for outdoor units in Hythe?

It can, as Hythe is within about 1 mile of the sea, where salt in the air is hard on coils and fixings. We site outdoor units out of the worst of the sea wind where possible and can suggest models with corrosion protection where the manufacturer offers it.

Is planning permission needed for a heat pump in Hythe?

It comes down to the building and the spot chosen for the outdoor unit. The half-mile around the middle of Hythe holds about 7 listed buildings and structures. On a house, an air source heat pump can often go ahead under permitted development, with an outdoor unit of no more than 1.5 cubic metres and an installation that meets MCS 020(a), which includes a noise check. Those rights do not reach the grounds of a listed building, and conservation areas rule out walls or roofs facing a road. If that might affect you, we ask New Forest council, which is normally the planning authority for Hythe.

Do you work in Hythe?

Yes. Our engineers work in Hythe, within the South East and London area we cover. We’re based in East Grinstead, West Sussex.

Can you set up regular servicing?

Yes. We offer maintenance contracts, with visits at the interval your system and the manufacturer need. Each visit is written up, with F-Gas records where refrigerant work is involved.

Does servicing affect my warranty?

It can, for some brands. Send us the make and model and we will tell you what the manufacturer expects, and book the service at the interval they recommend.

What warranty do I get?

It’s the manufacturer’s, and the terms are theirs. Some terms depend on regular servicing by a qualified engineer so it’s worth keeping the service records.

Is there VAT on a heat pump?

Installing an air source heat pump in a home is zero-rated until 31 March 2027, then 5%. It doesn’t apply to businesses. This is general information, not tax advice.

What a heat pump looks like in Hythe

Hythe is within about 1 mile of the coast. Coastal sites are worth mentioning at the survey, as salt air affects the outdoor unit and its fixings. VOA council tax data date about 55% of homes in the Hythe area to the post-war years, 1945 to 1972, and about 67% of households live in detached or semi-detached houses, according to the last census (2021). Homes of that age often have cavity walls that may or may not be insulated, which the survey checks. Detached and semi-detached houses normally have room for the outdoor unit and a cylinder.

With Medieval Merchant's House about 2.6 miles north, it’s worth asking whether your own home is listed before planning a heat pump. If your home is one of the older properties near Church of St John, the survey checks whether it’s listed or in a conservation area before the outdoor unit position is chosen.

How we price air source heat pumps

Some jobs are bigger than they look, and some smaller. What affects the quote:

  • The electrical supply and whether a new circuit is needed
  • How far the pipework has to run, and where
  • Access, including height, roofs and ladders

What you pay reflects the actual work. That is why we look at the job first, from pictures or on a survey, and the price is agreed before any work starts.

Helping us quote

The more you tell us, the more accurate the quote. With your enquiry, please include:

  • The address and the type of property
  • Photos showing the indoor unit and the space around it
  • A close-up of the unit’s label showing the model number

The quickest way to a quote is to send photos: the inside and outside of the property where the work is, plus the rating plate of any unit already there. Tell us the address and what you need, and simple jobs can often be priced without a visit.

What you can do yourself, and what needs us

Never try to top up, release or handle refrigerant yourself. Under the F-gas rules, engineers need their own qualifications and the company must be certified, and escaping refrigerant can cause cold burns. If you suspect a leak, switch the system off and call us.

Do not move, re-route or disconnect units or pipework yourself. Moving a unit involves the refrigerant circuit, so it needs an F-Gas qualified engineer, and the electrical side needs a competent person. If you need something moved, we can quote for it.

What we do, step by step

The first job on site is protection: sheets over the floor and any furniture nearby, and we ask before moving anything. Then the electrics are made safe and the work begins. It takes a few days on site, depending on the cylinder, the radiators and the pipework involved, and we tidy up before we leave. Access to the outdoor unit position is the main thing to tell us about in Hythe.

  1. You tell us about the home and what you want from a heat pump.
  2. A survey covers heat loss, radiators, hot water and where the outdoor unit could sit.
  3. You get our view on the right type for the house, and on whether the Boiler Upgrade Scheme applies.
  4. Installation follows on the agreed dates.
  5. After commissioning, you get the MCS certificate and a handover.

Before we arrive

  • Move furniture away from the wall where we’ll be working
  • Make sure we can reach the outdoor unit, or where it will go
  • Keep pets out of the rooms we are working in
