Air source heat pumps in Gun Hill
Every installation starts with a heat loss survey. It shows how much heat each room needs on a cold day, so the heat pump and the radiators or indoor units can be sized properly. Guesswork leads to systems that are too big or too small. If you are dealing with an oil, LPG or gas boiler near the end of its life and deciding which kind of heat pump suits the home, we can help.
Space for an outdoor unit is rarely an issue near Gun Hill, so the design focuses on heat loss and radiators.
Refrigerant work is written up in the F-Gas records: what was done, the refrigerant type and any amount added or recovered. File them with the system’s paperwork, as a manufacturer or a future engineer may ask to see them.

Air source heat pumps in Gun Hill: the local picture
About 36% of homes across Gun Hill and its surrounding area have been built since 2000, according to VOA council tax data, and about 76% of households live in detached or semi-detached houses, according to Census 2021 figures. Better insulated, newer homes are often a good match for a heat pump. Detached and semi-detached houses typically have room for the outdoor unit and a cylinder.
Sizing comes from the heat each room loses on a cold day, not from the size of the old boiler. If your home is listed, like Horselunges Manor about 1.9 miles south-east, listed building consent comes before any heat pump work.
Gun Hill is about 3 miles north-west of Hailsham, in East Sussex. We cover Gun Hill for air source heat pumps, along with the rest of East Sussex. Gun Hill is one of 289 towns, villages and districts in East Sussex where we work. Our Eastbourne page covers places nearby (9 miles or so).
The closest recent job we can point to from Gun Hill was on South Road, Hailsham (BN27), about 3 miles south-east: installing individual wall-mounted units in 12 resident bedrooms, two communal lounges and the dining room: 15 units in total served by three outdoor units.

Common questions in Gun Hill
Is a heat pump in Gun Hill permitted development?
The answer turns on the property and where the outdoor unit would sit. Historic England lists about 9 buildings and structures within half a mile of the centre of Gun Hill. The permitted development rules for heat pumps leave out listed buildings and stop outdoor units going on road-facing walls or roofs in conservation areas. Anything outside the rules needs an application, and we raise it with the planning department at Wealden council, usually the authority for Gun Hill first.
Is the heat pump grant available in Gun Hill?
Yes, if the home and the heat pump meet the scheme’s rules: Gun Hill is in England, where it applies. It gives £7,500 towards an air-to-water or ground source heat pump, or £2,500 towards an air-to-air heat pump that replaces the fossil-fuel heating and meets the whole home’s heating need. We hold MCS certification, so the application is ours to make for you.
Who is responsible for leak checks?
The F-gas rules share it between the equipment’s operator and the engineers who work on it. The interval depends on the refrigerant charge, measured in tonnes of CO2 equivalent: at least yearly for 5 to under 50 tCO2e, and every 6 months for 50 to under 500 tCO2e.
Do you work in Gun Hill?
Yes. Our engineers work in Gun Hill, within the South East and London area we cover. Our base is in East Grinstead, West Sussex.
Which type of heat pump is right for my home?
Air-to-water heats radiators or underfloor heating and hot water; air-to-air heats rooms through indoor units and can cool them. With air-to-air, hot water needs another source and the survey helps decide.
Do you provide F-Gas records?
Yes. It’s the record a manufacturer or the next engineer will ask to see: a dated note of the work, with refrigerant details where they apply.
Why use an F-Gas certified company?
F-Gas certification shows a company is approved to work on equipment containing fluorinated gases, such as the refrigerant in air conditioning and heat pumps. That is not optional: it’s required by law, and AirCon Doctor is certified.
Aftercare tips
To keep the system working properly:
- Keep to regular servicing
- Find out the grant position at the survey
- Let the heat pump run steadily, as set up at handover
Should you have questions after the install, call 07833 053749 or fill in the contact form and we’ll talk it through. A yearly service is a good habit.
Keep radiators and indoor units unobstructed so the heat can get into the room.
What happens on the day
Refrigerant work is done by qualified engineers working for an F-Gas certified company, while the electrical side is covered by our NICEIC approval. So on the day, you don’t need a separate electrician for the electrical side. On site, it takes several days for an air-to-water system with a new cylinder, less for an air-to-air system. Visits to Gun Hill are agreed with you in advance and planned so the job can be finished in one trip where possible.
- It starts with a conversation about the home, the existing heating and your plans.
- A heat loss survey works out how much heat each room needs, and we look at the radiators, the cylinder space and where the outdoor unit could go.
- A fixed-price quote follows, setting out the system, any grant that applies and the VAT.
- The outdoor unit, the indoor equipment and the controls are installed and connected.
- Once it’s running correctly, the MCS certificate is issued and we show you the settings.
Getting ready for the visit
- Name a contact who can meet us at the agreed time

Owner checks or an engineer?
There are a few things you can safely do yourself: keeping the outdoor unit clear, checking the mode and set temperature, and the routine cleaning in the manual. Opening up the units, the electrics and the refrigerant circuit are a job for us.
Leave the units and pipework where they are. Moving a unit involves the refrigerant circuit, so it needs an F-Gas qualified engineer, and the electrics need care too. Ask us to quote for a move instead.
