Air conditioning in TN21: how it works

Wall-mounted, multi-split, ducted and cassette systems are all part of what we install, plus VRF systems for bigger commercial buildings. Which one suits you depends on the space, the building and how much of the unit you want to see and we talk you through it on the survey. Typical jobs include a home office that warms up with screens and equipment and fans and portables that don’t keep up, on VRF systems, wall-mounted split systems and ducted systems.

The visit goes in the diary at a time that works for you, and we keep you posted if anything changes. When we arrive, we check the job against the survey or the photos you sent. Anything unexpected is raised with you before we go further. From there, the work takes a day or more, depending on the number of rooms, the pipe routes and the access.

  1. Diagnosis comes first, with a survey of the rooms, outside space and fuse board.
  2. Next, a recommendation for each room and a fixed price.
  3. Then the work: units up, pipes and drain run, and a new circuit where necessary.
  4. Testing: the circuit is pressure tested and evacuated before the refrigerant is released.
  5. Finally, the clean bill of health: commissioning, the controls explained and your paperwork handed over.

What affects the price in TN21

Every job is different, so we price each one individually. The system, the access, the pipe routes and the parts involved all play a part.

Air conditioning across TN21: local notes

In TN21, as across England, the same permitted development rules apply: cooling-only units are not covered, listed buildings need consent and conservation areas restrict outdoor units facing a road.

An F-Gas certified company does the refrigerant side, and the electrics come under our NICEIC approval, in TN21 as everywhere else.

Heathfield: If your home is in one of the older streets near St Richards Church, it’s worth checking whether it’s listed or in a conservation area before an install. Most people start with the room that gets hottest, then add more rooms on a multi-split if needed.

Why deal with it now?

The best time to plan air conditioning is before the hot weather, not during it. When people buy in a hurry, the unit is often the wrong size or badly placed, and that is hard to put right later. A survey now gives time to choose properly.

What your quote should include

  • Whether a new circuit is included and who certifies it
  • What’s in the price and what is not
  • Which brand and model they’re proposing, and why
  • Whether they looked at the job before pricing it

Looking after it afterwards

Systems last better with the right care. We suggest:

  • Tell us if the unit starts to leak, rattle or show a code
  • Keep the F-Gas records, commissioning details and warranty information together
  • Choose a comfortable set temperature rather than the lowest
  • Keep the indoor unit’s filters clean

We recommend an annual service, and some manufacturers make regular servicing a condition of their warranty. We will remind you when it’s due if you’d like.

Clean the filters regularly, not just at the service. Blocked filters cut airflow and make the system work harder, so it uses less electricity for the same comfort.

Why it fails

Computers, screens, lighting and people all give off heat. A small office or a busy room can warm up fast with equipment and people in it, even on a mild day.

Look out for these signs:

  • Too many options and no clear advice
  • Portable units that are noisy and barely cope
  • A business premises that overheats in summer
  • A system on old refrigerant that’s due for replacement

What owners can safely do

Some faults have simple causes you can check first: check the mode, the set temperature, the remote’s batteries and the breaker. If a breaker trips again after you reset it, leave it off and give us a ring on 07833 053749 or fill in the contact form.

Never try to top up, release or handle refrigerant yourself. The law requires anyone working on equipment containing F gas to hold the right qualifications, and the company to be certified, and refrigerant lines can cause cold burns. A suspected leak is our job, not yours.

TN21 questions

Where does the outdoor unit go?

It can go on a wall bracket, at ground level or on a flat roof, chosen for the pipe route, airflow and access. We also think about noise near bedrooms and neighbours and position can affect planning.

Do you have a 24/7 line?

Yes. For anything urgent, such as a system failing in a server room or water leaking from a unit, ring our 24/7 line and we’ll agree what happens next.

Do you work for landlords and businesses?

Yes. We work for homeowners, landlords, letting and managing agents, and businesses of every size in TN21 and across East Sussex. Let us know who the records should go to.

Which type of system should I choose?

It depends on the rooms and the building. A split suits one room, a multi-split several, a ducted system hides the unit, and a cassette spreads air across larger rooms. The survey ends with a recommendation and the reasons.

Does air conditioning need its own electrical supply?

Most of the time, yes: a dedicated circuit is needed. Under Part P, a new circuit has to be notified unless a registered competent person does it, and we are NICEIC approved, so we can install and certify it.

Are you F-Gas certified?

AirCon Doctor is an F-Gas certified company, NICEIC approved for electrical work and MCS certified for heat pumps. We are members of Checkatrade too.

Who has to arrange F-Gas leak checks?

Whoever operates the equipment, together with the technicians who service it. Systems below 5 tCO2e fall outside the set leak check intervals, while larger ones need checks at least every 12 months, or every 6 months from 50 tCO2e. We can tell you which band your system falls into.
