Air source heat pumps in Five Ashes

Air source heat pumps around Five Ashes

About 69% of households live in detached or semi-detached houses, according to Census 2021 figures. Finding room for the outdoor unit and a cylinder is seldom a problem in homes like these. Roughly a third of a mile or less from central Five Ashes, you reach the Five Ashes Conservation Area. Fir Cottage, listed at grade II, is one of roughly 13 protected buildings and structures in the half-mile around Five Ashes’s centre. That affects heat pumps: listed buildings need consent, and conservation areas limit where the outdoor unit can go under permitted development. Where needed, we check with the planning team at Wealden council, which usually handles Five Ashes.

Every heat pump design starts with a room-by-room heat loss calculation. If your home is one of the older properties near Church of the Good Shepherd, the survey checks whether it’s listed or in a conservation area before the outdoor unit position is chosen.

Air source heat pumps in Five Ashes, done properly

Air source heat pumps collect heat from outdoor air and bring it inside, using electricity to drive the process. It works on the same principle as air conditioning, run the other way, and air-to-air heat pumps are sometimes simply called air conditioning. We are often asked to deal with finding a place for the outdoor unit and no space for a hot water cylinder, on air-to-air heat pumps, homes heated by oil, LPG or gas and air-to-water heat pumps.

Homes around Five Ashes typically have room outside for a heat pump, so the design comes down to heat loss, radiators and hot water.

Think of the paperwork as the system’s health record: what was fitted or found, what was done and when. It makes the next visit quicker and any warranty question simpler and it’s worth keeping safe.

Leave it or put it right?

If the emitters cannot give out enough heat, some rooms will not get warm enough. The survey picks this up before installation. An early booking makes the visit to Five Ashes easier to arrange.

Height, access and the distance between the indoor and outdoor units can all change the price. We take each of them into account, and the price is fixed before any work starts.

The process

The visit has three parts, a bit like a doctor’s appointment: diagnose, treat and sign off. First comes a careful look at the system or the space, then we do the work, and finally we test, record and explain. Most of the time goes on the middle part, and that takes several days for an air-to-water system with a new cylinder, less for an air-to-air system. Rural lanes and tight entrances are worth mentioning before a visit to Five Ashes.

  1. We start with your plans and the property.
  2. We survey for heat loss and look at radiators, cylinder space and outdoor unit options.
  3. We explain which type of heat pump suits the home and whether a grant could apply.
  4. The system is installed and connected to the controls.
  5. The job ends with commissioning, the MCS certificate and a walk through the controls.

Getting ready for the visit

Advice

Five Ashes: your questions answered

Is the heat pump grant available in Five Ashes?

Yes, the scheme covers homes in England, including Five Ashes, if they qualify. For an air-to-water heat pump the amount is £7,500; an air-to-air system can get £2,500 if it replaces the fossil-fuel heating outright, meets the home’s full heating demand and isn’t an add-on to a boiler. You do not apply yourself: the MCS certified installer does, which is us.

Will you come out to Five Ashes?

Yes, and the size of the place makes no difference to how we work. Send a few details and pictures, and we reply the same working day.

Are my radiators big enough for a heat pump?

It varies from room to room. We check them all during the survey and the quote shows what’s needed.

Whose job is it to check the system for leaks?

The F-gas rules share it between the equipment’s operator and the engineers who work on it. How often depends on the size of the refrigerant charge in tonnes of CO2 equivalent: at least every 12 months from 5 tCO2e, and every 6 months from 50 tCO2e.

How long does a heat pump installation take?

A typical installation takes several days for an air-to-water system with a new cylinder, less for an air-to-air system. We plan the work so you’re without heating for as little time as possible and agreed before work begins.

Which type of heat pump is right for my home?

Air-to-water replaces the boiler for heating and hot water, while air-to-air heats and cools rooms. The survey helps decide. We install both types.

What accreditations do you have?

We’re an F-Gas certified company, NICEIC approved for electrical work and MCS certified for heat pumps. We’re members of Checkatrade too.

Fixed-price quotes for air source heat pumps in Five Ashes

Every job gets its own quote. This is what makes a difference:

  • One-off work versus a regular service cycle
  • How far the pipework has to run, and where
  • Which make and model is being fitted or worked on

A single unit or a whole estate, the quote is built the same way: the work involved, the access and the equipment. The price is fixed before any work starts, and the quote sets out the VAT.

What we need to know

When you contact us, it’s useful to have:

  • Any previous service or F-Gas records
  • Wide photos of the room or the existing unit
  • Any error code or flashing light on the display

VAT is set out clearly on every quote, and the rate that applies to your job is stated. Homes, businesses and different kinds of work can be treated differently for VAT, so we confirm it in writing rather than guess. To get one, ring 07833 053749 or send an email.

When something else is needed

In fairness, there are a few things this work will not fix:

  • Gas boiler work, such as disconnecting the old boiler, which needs a Gas Safe registered engineer
  • A grant for a home that doesn’t meet the scheme rules
  • Tax advice on your own circumstances

If in doubt, phone 07833 053749 or email us and we will say what we think before you book.

Where we work

  • Homes heated by oil, LPG or gas
  • Underfloor heating
  • Air-to-water heat pumps
  • Air-to-air heat pumps
  • Radiator systems
  • Hot water cylinders
