Air source heat pumps in Covent Garden, done properly
A heat pump takes heat from the outside air and moves it into your home, using electricity to drive the process. It works on the same principle as air conditioning, run the other way, and air-to-air heat pumps are sometimes simply called air conditioning. The work covers hot water cylinders, air-to-water heat pumps and air-to-air heat pumps, and common reasons people get in touch are plans to switch to electric heating with a heat pump and deciding on the outdoor unit position.
In a flat in Covent Garden, the lease and the freeholder typically decide where a heat pump can go. Permitted development limits are different for flats, and we check before designing.
The records are your system’s health record: what was fitted or found, what was done and when. If anything goes wrong later, it helps the next engineer and the manufacturer, so keep it safe.

System by system
VAT on heat pumps
Heat pumps in homes carry 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, and 5% after that following HMRC’s rules on energy-saving materials. Businesses pay the standard rate.
Hot water cylinders
An older cylinder may not suit a heat pump and we tell you if it needs replacing.
After we have gone
Every system needs looking after, and most of it is easy. Our tips:
- Check eligibility for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme early
- Avoid switching the heat pump on and off often
- Know the servicing conditions in your warranty
Where we applied for a Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant, we keep you informed through the process, as the installer applies for it.
Heat pumps prefer steady, low-temperature running, using the settings agreed at handover.
What we do, step by step
You do not need to do much on the day. Someone needs to let us in and show us the units, or where they’re going, and we take it from there. Before we leave, the area is tidied and we explain what we’ve done. A note on parking and access helps us plan a visit to Covent Garden.
- We talk through your home, your current heating and what you want from a heat pump.
- A heat loss survey works out how much heat each room needs, and we look at the radiators, the cylinder space and where the outdoor unit could go.
- The price comes back fixed and in writing, with the grant and VAT shown line by line.
- The outdoor unit, the indoor equipment and the controls are installed and connected.
- Commissioning, MCS certification and a handover of the controls finish the job.
Preparing for the visit
- Clear a path to the units and the space around them
- Plan for pets to be kept clear during the visit
- Tell us about any building rules, permits or sign-in

Photos are enough for some jobs; others need a visit first. Multi-room systems, commercial buildings and anything with a long or hidden pipe route are normally surveyed first. Either way, you get a fixed price before any work is booked.

Your questions about air source heat pumps in Covent Garden
Does the Boiler Upgrade Scheme cover homes in Covent Garden?
Covent Garden is covered, as the scheme runs across England and Wales. The amount depends on the type of heat pump, and the survey confirms which applies. You do not apply yourself: the MCS certified installer does, which is us.
Can I have air conditioning in a flat in Covent Garden?
In many cases, yes, once the lease and the building’s rules are checked. We look at where the outdoor unit could go, such as a balcony, flat roof or rear wall, and write it up for the freeholder or agent.
Can we book visits on a schedule?
Yes. Send details of the systems and how they’re used, and we’ll suggest a schedule with a fixed price. Leak checks required by the F-gas rules can be built in for larger systems.
Does servicing affect my warranty?
It can, for some brands. Send us the make and model and we’ll tell you what the manufacturer expects and stick to the interval they set.
Do you work on all makes?
The main ones, including Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin, Fujitsu, Panasonic, Toshiba, LG, Samsung, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Hitachi. For new systems, we recommend a brand and model to suit the job and explain why.
Are you F-Gas certified?
AirCon Doctor is an F-Gas certified company, with NICEIC approval for electrical work and MCS certification for heat pumps. We are also Checkatrade members.
What’s the difference between air-to-water and air-to-air heat pumps?
Air-to-water feeds your central heating and hot water, while air-to-air warms and cools rooms directly. Air-to-air does not heat hot water, and we explain which suits your home.
Safe owner checks
On air conditioning, the filters in the indoor unit are usually the one part owners can clean where the manufacturer’s manual explains how. They come out, get a gentle clean and go back only when they’re dry. For a heat pump, the main owner jobs are a clear outdoor unit and sensible control settings.
Owner care supports servicing; it does not replace it. Clean filters and a clear outdoor unit help the system run as it should, but the inside of the units, the refrigerant and the electrics still need a qualified engineer.

Air source heat pumps around Covent Garden
About 50% of homes across Covent Garden and its surrounding area were built before 1919, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax records, and the 2021 Census found about 96% of households live in flats. In older homes, the heat loss calculation is especially important, as solid walls and draughts change the size of heat pump needed. In flats, space for an outdoor unit and a cylinder can be limited, and the lease and freeholder come into it, so air-to-air is sometimes the better fit. For a London home, the outdoor unit position and the MCS noise check need careful planning.
Historic houses such as Benjamin Franklin House, about 0.4 miles south, are a reminder that listed homes need consent before a heat pump goes in. Live in one of the older houses around Crown Court Church? Expect the survey to look closely at heat loss and at the building’s planning status.

What a customer said
“Office air con broke down in the July heatwave. Called at 8am, engineer was here by noon and fixed within 2 hours. Brilliant emergency response. They now hold the service contract for the whole building.”
