Air source heat pumps in Caring

A £2,500 grant is available for some air-to-air heat pumps, with conditions. The system must replace the existing fossil-fuel heating and meet the home’s full heating demand, it must be installed by an MCS certified installer, and it must be in a home; adding it alongside a boiler doesn’t qualify. The work covers radiator systems, air-to-air heat pumps and air-to-water heat pumps, and people most often call us about deciding which kind of heat pump suits the home and an oil, LPG or gas boiler near the end of its life.

For a home around Caring that’s off mains gas and heated by oil or LPG, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme adds an extra £1,500 until March 2027 for an air source or ground source heat pump, on top of the £7,500.

Some warranty terms depend on the system being serviced regularly by a qualified engineer. If that applies to your system, booking the service on time keeps the record straight, and every service is written up.

Caring questions

Does the Boiler Upgrade Scheme cover homes in Caring?

Caring is in England, where the Boiler Upgrade Scheme runs. Whether your home qualifies, and for how much, depends on the type of heat pump and the heating it replaces. We hold MCS certification, so the application is ours to make for you.

Do you cover smaller places like Caring?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. Visits to smaller places are planned so the engineer arrives with what the job needs.

How do you keep the place clean during the work?

We start with protection: sheets over the floor and nearby furniture. Holes and fixings are agreed with you, and we clean up afterwards when we finish.

Can you set up regular servicing?

Yes. Send details of the systems and how they’re used and we will propose a schedule and quote for it. That can include the leak checks the F-gas rules require for larger systems.

Do you work for landlords and businesses?

Yes. From one rented home to commercial buildings, the approach is the same: a look first, a fixed-price quote and written records.

What’s the difference between air-to-water and air-to-air heat pumps?

The right choice depends on the property and what you need. Air-to-water can attract a £7,500 grant where eligible; air-to-air only qualifies for £2,500 under strict conditions, and we set out the options after the survey.

Whose job is it to check the system for leaks?

The operator of the equipment, working with qualified engineers. Larger systems need regular checks: at least every 12 months from 5 tCO2e and every 6 months from 50 tCO2e. We will work out which band applies to yours.

What a heat pump looks like in Caring

About 43% of homes across Caring and its surrounding area date from 1945 to 1972, according to the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures, and about 78% of households live in detached or semi-detached houses, according to Census 2021 figures. For homes of that age, the survey checks the insulation, the radiators and the hot water setup. Finding room for the outdoor unit and a cylinder is seldom a problem in homes like these. Historic England lists about 12 buildings and structures within half a mile of the centre of Caring, including Milgate House (grade I). That affects heat pumps: listed buildings need consent, and conservation areas limit where the outdoor unit can go under permitted development. Where needed, we check with the planning team at Maidstone council, which typically handles Caring.

Live in one of the older houses around St Nicholas's Church? Expect the survey to look closely at heat loss and at the building’s planning status. Stoneacre, roughly 0.7 miles south-west, is a reminder to check your home’s listing status: permitted development doesn’t cover listed buildings.

What happens on the day

Testing is the last part of the visit wherever the system can be switched on. Then we explain what was done and answer your questions, and anything that needs attention later is pointed out. The visit takes from a couple of days to around a week, depending on the system and how much of the heating changes. Rural lanes and tight entrances are worth mentioning before a visit to Caring.

  1. First we talk through the property and the current system.
  2. We measure heat loss for every room.
  3. We design the system, check the radiators and cylinder and look at the outdoor unit position.
  4. A fixed-price quote explains the cost, the grant position and the VAT.
  5. We install, commission and register the system under MCS.

How to get a quote

Photos are the fastest route to a quote: the room or the existing unit, the outside wall or roof where the outdoor unit sits or would go, and the label on any existing unit. Add the address and what you’d like done, and many jobs can be priced from that.

Different systems, different jobs

Outdoor unit position and planning

The outdoor unit needs a position with good airflow, a solid base and a sensible pipe route. We also consider neighbours and noise, as MCS 020(a) includes a noise check.

VAT on heat pumps

Heat pumps in homes carry 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, and 5% after that following HMRC’s rules on energy-saving materials. Businesses pay the standard rate.

Managing agents and facilities teams in Caring

From a single flat to a whole estate, the approach is the same: diagnosis, a fixed price, access agreed with the people on site and paperwork at the end.

Larger air conditioning systems in buildings need more than servicing: systems with an effective rated output over 12 kW need a TM44 inspection by an accredited energy assessor at least every 5 years. We arrange the inspection, get the system ready and put right anything it picks up.

A customer’s words

“Excellent service from start to finish. Two wall-mounted units installed in our home. Clean, tidy work: they protected all the floors and left no mess. The systems work brilliantly. Would highly recommend.”
