What a heat pump looks like in Begbroke
The last census (2021) found about 68% of households in detached or semi-detached houses. Finding room for the outdoor unit and a cylinder is seldom a problem in homes like these.
Live in one of the older houses around Church of St Philip? Expect the survey to look closely at heat loss and at the building’s planning status.

How we handle air source heat pumps in Begbroke
Heat pumps run at lower flow temperatures than most boilers, so radiators may need to be larger to give out the same heat. We check each radiator against the room’s heat loss, and the quote sets it out. We’re often asked to deal with no space for a hot water cylinder and finding a place for the outdoor unit, across air-to-water heat pumps, underfloor heating and air-to-air heat pumps.
Space for an outdoor unit is rarely an issue near Begbroke, so the design comes down to heat loss, radiators and hot water.
Some manufacturers make regular servicing by a qualified engineer a condition of their warranty. If that applies to your system, booking the service on time keeps the record straight and each visit is recorded.

How the job changes from property to property
Air-to-water heat pumps
The price for air-to-water is £8,000–£16,000 (0% VAT on homes), before the grant. A £7,500 grant may be available through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme for eligible homes, and we apply for it as the installer.
Heat loss surveys
The survey covers the building fabric and how air moves through it, and the size of each room.
How it works
On the day, we arrive at the time agreed with you and check the plan with you first. Dust sheets go down over floors and anything close to the work, and the electrics are made safe before any panel comes off. The work itself takes several days for an air-to-water system with a new cylinder, less for an air-to-air system. Rural lanes and tight entrances are worth mentioning before a visit to Begbroke.
- It starts with a conversation about the home, the existing heating and your plans.
- The survey measures heat loss room by room and looks at radiators, hot water and the best spot for the outdoor unit.
- You get a fixed-price quote, with any grant you are eligible for and the VAT explained.
- The outdoor unit, the indoor equipment and the controls are installed and connected.
- Once it’s running correctly, the MCS certificate is issued and we show you the settings.
Before we arrive
- Let us know if the building has a permit or sign-in process
- Tell us about access, such as roof hatches, high walls or locked plant areas
- Keep pets out of the rooms we’re working in
How to get a quote
Published ranges are a starting point; the quote is built on your property, because no two buildings, rooms or systems are the same. After a look at the job, by pictures or a survey, the price is fixed. To start, phone us on 07833 053749 or send an email.
Related advice
Looking after your system
Every system needs looking after, and most of it is easy. Our tips:
- Let the heat pump run steadily, as set up at handover
- Leave indoor units unobstructed
- Check eligibility for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme early
Should you have questions after the install, phone us on 07833 053749, or email if that’s easier and we will talk it through. Annual servicing helps keep the system working well.
Don’t cover radiators with furniture or heavy curtains, as the system relies on them giving out heat.
When to call us in Begbroke
Many people look at heat pumps when an oil, LPG or gas boiler is getting old. Starting early leaves time for the survey, the design and any grant application instead of making a rushed decision when the heating stops.
What we are most often called about:
- Ageing boilers that will need replacing
- Finding a place for the outdoor unit
- Replacing a combi boiler with a heat pump
Blenheim Palace, roughly 2.2 miles north-west, is a reminder to check your home’s listing status: permitted development doesn’t cover listed buildings.
Questions to ask before booking
- Whether the electrical work is done by a registered contractor, such as NICEIC approved
- Exactly what the price includes, from supply and fitting to commissioning
- The make and model of any parts or equipment being quoted
Begbroke questions
Can I get the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant in Begbroke?
Begbroke is covered, as the scheme runs across England and Wales. For an air-to-water heat pump the amount is £7,500; an air-to-air system can get £2,500 if it replaces the fossil-fuel heating outright, meets the home’s full heating demand and is not an add-on to a boiler. As an MCS certified installer, we apply for it on your behalf.
Is a heat pump in Begbroke permitted development?
It depends on the property. There’s a conservation area, the Begbroke Conservation Area, close to central Begbroke. The permitted development rules for heat pumps leave out listed buildings and stop outdoor units going on road-facing walls or roofs in conservation areas. Anything outside the rules needs an application, and we raise it with Cherwell council, which is typically the planning authority for Begbroke first.
Who has to arrange F-Gas leak checks?
The F-gas rules share it between the equipment’s operator and the engineers who work on it. How often depends on the size of the refrigerant charge in tonnes of CO2 equivalent: at least every 12 months from 5 tCO2e, and every 6 months from 50 tCO2e.
Will you work on another installer’s system?
Yes. We start with a proper look and tell you honestly what we find, including anything about the original installation that needs putting right. Any work is priced before it goes ahead.
Do you protect the property while you work?
Protection goes down first: sheets over the floor and nearby furniture. Holes and fixings are agreed with you, and we clean up afterwards before we leave.
Can we book visits on a schedule?
Yes. Send details of the systems and how they’re used and we will propose a schedule and quote for it. Leak checks required by the F-gas rules can be built in for larger systems.
Do I need new radiators for a heat pump?
It depends on each radiator and the room it heats. Heat pumps run at lower flow temperatures, so radiators give out less heat so we check every radiator against the room’s heat loss.
What a customer said
“Very professional from the initial survey through to installation. The engineer explained everything clearly and the quote was exactly what we paid. Would not hesitate to recommend AirCon Doctor.”
