Air conditioning in OX5: how it works
Across OX5, every installation follows the same steps: a site survey, or photos for simple jobs, then a fixed-price quote, the installation, commissioning and F-Gas records. You know the price before we start and the paperwork is in your hands when we finish. Common call-outs are for an ageing air conditioning system near the end of its life and working from home in a room that gets too warm, across wall-mounted split systems, multi-split systems and VRF systems.
Anything involving refrigerant is handled by F-Gas qualified engineers, as the law requires, and electrical work is done by us as NICEIC approved contractors. On the day, both are in the same hands. On site, it takes a day or more, depending on the number of rooms, the pipe routes and the access.
- Diagnosis comes first, with a survey of the rooms, outside space and fuse board.
- Next, a recommendation for each room and a fixed price.
- The treatment: units fitted, pipework and drain routed, and the electrics installed.
- Checks: a pressure test for leaks, then a vacuum to clear moisture.
- Finally, the clean bill of health: commissioning, the controls explained and your paperwork handed over.

Around Kidlington
Locally, jobs take us to houses, flats and workplaces close to St Thomas More Catholic Primary School, Church of St Mary and Red Lion pub. For rail, the closest station is Oxford Parkway station, about 1.3 miles south. Other landmarks nearby include Oxford Castle (4.9 miles south) and Acland Hospital (4.3 miles south). Not far away are Hook Meadow and The Trap Grounds.
Air conditioning around OX5
In OX5, we install in places such as Kidlington, Yarnton and Islip and well beyond. Every place on our OX5 list (17 in all) is covered.
Our area stretches from Greater London through Surrey, Kent and Sussex to Hampshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Hertfordshire and Essex, and OX5 sits within it. One phone number covers all of it.
Kidlington: Homes near Church of St Mary are a good example of where we look up the heritage status of the building before fixing anything to it. Blenheim Palace, about 3.5 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses nearby, and if your own home is listed, consent comes before any air conditioning is fixed to it.
What air conditioning can’t fix
An honest diagnosis matters more to us than a booking, so here’s what air conditioning won’t do:
- A building fabric problem such as single glazing or no loft insulation
- Stuffy rooms that need fresh air rather than cooling
- Work that needs permission from a landlord or the council
What you can do yourself, and what needs us
Leave the units and pipework where they are. Moving a unit involves the refrigerant circuit, so it needs an F-Gas qualified engineer, and the electrical side needs a competent person. Ask us to quote for a move instead.
On air conditioning, the filters in the indoor unit are typically the one part owners can clean, if the manual says so. With the power off, they lift out, can be vacuumed or rinsed and must be fully dry before they go back. For a heat pump, the main owner jobs are a clear outdoor unit and sensible control settings.
Different systems, different jobs
Electrical supply
The fuse board is looked at during the survey, so any extra electrical work is on the quote rather than a surprise on the day. An older board may need extra work and we will tell you if yours does.
Offices, shops and commercial rooms
Bigger systems in buildings come with extra duties, including a TM44 inspection by an accredited energy assessor at least every 5 years. We can arrange and prepare for it.
After we’ve gone
Here’s the after-treatment advice, in brief:
- Wash or vacuum the filters as the manual describes
- Report drips, noises or error codes right away
- Use moderate settings for comfort and economy
- Book an annual service
The filters are the one part you will look after yourself, so we show you how. In busy periods, clean them every few weeks, or as the manual recommends, and keep the outdoor unit clear of leaves and clutter.
Use sensible settings. A moderate set temperature cools the room just as well as the lowest one, without the waste and keep doors and windows shut while it runs.
OX5 questions
Will I get records for the system?
Yes. Every visit is written up, and any work on the refrigerant circuit goes in the F-Gas records. File them with the system’s paperwork.
How much is air conditioning for one room?
For one room, a split system is typically £1,200–£2,200 + VAT. Two rooms on a multi-split are typically £2,800–£4,500 + VAT, and three to five rooms £4,500–£8,500 + VAT, with supply, fitting, commissioning and F-Gas documentation included. You get a fixed price before any work starts.
Can I do the refrigerant work myself?
Anything that involves the refrigerant needs an F-Gas qualified engineer from a certified company. That’s a legal requirement, and manufacturers expect it for their warranty too. We can quote for the whole job, from supply to commissioning.
Do you offer maintenance contracts?
Yes. Maintenance contracts are part of what we do, with visits at the interval your system and the manufacturer need. Each visit is written up, with F-Gas records where refrigerant work is involved.
Do you cover OX5?
Yes. We work across Greater London, Surrey, Kent, East and West Sussex, Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Hertfordshire and Essex, and that includes OX5.
Will skipping a service affect the warranty?
It can, for some brands. Send us the make and model and we will tell you what the manufacturer expects and stick to the interval they set.
What does F-Gas certified mean?
Certification shows a business is approved to work on systems that hold F gas refrigerant. In Great Britain, that certification is a legal requirement, not an optional extra, and AirCon Doctor is certified.
