Questions from Barking
Does the Boiler Upgrade Scheme cover homes in Barking?
Barking is covered, as the scheme runs across England and Wales. Whether your home qualifies, and for how much, depends on the type of heat pump and the heating it replaces. You don’t apply yourself: the MCS certified installer does, which is us.
Do I need permission to put air conditioning in my flat in Barking?
Often, yes, but the lease and the freeholder usually have a say. We look at where the outdoor unit could go, such as a balcony, flat roof or rear wall, and write it up for the freeholder or agent.
What’s the difference between air-to-water and air-to-air heat pumps?
Air-to-water heats radiators or underfloor heating and hot water; air-to-air heats rooms through indoor units and can cool them. Air-to-air doesn’t heat hot water, and we explain which suits your home.
Who is responsible for leak checks?
The F-gas rules share it between the equipment’s operator and the engineers who work on it. How often depends on the size of the refrigerant charge in tonnes of CO2 equivalent: at least yearly for 5 to under 50 tCO2e, and every 6 months for 50 to under 500 tCO2e.
Do I need to service the system to keep the warranty?
For some brands, yes. Send us the make and model and we’ll tell you what the manufacturer expects, and book the service at the interval they recommend.
Is Barking in your area?
Yes. Our engineers work in Barking, as part of our area across London and the South East. Our base is in East Grinstead, West Sussex.
Can you look at a system you didn’t fit?
Yes. Systems fitted by other companies are fine from all the leading brands. Send us the make and model, and any records you have.
Air source heat pumps for homes and businesses in Barking
An air-to-water heat pump costs £8,000–£16,000 (0% VAT on homes), before the grant. In England and Wales, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme offers a £7,500 grant towards an eligible air-to-water installation and the installer makes the application. Not every home qualifies, so we check eligibility before you commit. If you’re dealing with replacing a combi boiler with a heat pump and questions about the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, we can help.
Homes in Barking are often flats and terraces, where outside space is limited, and that decides which kind of heat pump works. Air-to-water needs room for the outdoor unit and usually a cylinder, while an air-to-air system needs less space.
The records are your system’s health record: what was fitted or found, what was done and when. If anything goes wrong later, it helps the next engineer and the manufacturer, so keep it safe.

Do you need air source heat pumps in Barking?
Air-to-air systems interest people who want cooling in summer as well as heating. They warm rooms directly through indoor units, and can cool them when it’s hot. Whether a grant applies depends on the scheme conditions.
Look out for these signs:
- Checking whether planning permission is needed
- Wanting to stop using oil, LPG or gas for heating
- Ageing boilers that will need replacing
For a home near Barking station, the survey looks at whether an air-to-water or air-to-air heat pump suits better.

Homes in Barking and heat pumps
Valuation Office Agency council tax records show about 39% of homes in Barking and the neighbourhoods around it were built in 2000 or later, and the 2021 Census found about 35% of households in terraced houses. Lower heat loss in recent homes often means a smaller heat pump and fewer radiator changes. Shared walls keep a terrace’s heat loss down, while gardens next door make the noise check on the outdoor unit important. In London, outside space and the rules for flats often decide which kind of heat pump suits.
Eastbury Manor House, roughly 0.1 miles east, is a reminder to check your home’s listing status: permitted development doesn’t cover listed buildings.

Different systems, different jobs
Air-to-air heat pumps
A £2,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant is available for air-to-air only if it replaces the fossil-fuel heating and meets the full heating demand. It also has to be fitted by an MCS certified installer, in a home.
Air-to-water heat pumps
Air-to-water systems work at lower temperatures than boilers, which is why radiator sizing is part of the survey.
The process
The first job on site is protection: sheets over the floor and any furniture nearby, and we ask before moving anything. Then the electrics are made safe and the work begins. It takes a few days for most air-to-water installations, with air-to-air systems often quicker, and we clear up before we go. If your building in Barking has a managing agent, a concierge or sign-in rules, mention them when you book.
- We talk through your home, your current heating and what you want from a heat pump.
- A heat loss survey works out how much heat each room needs, and we look at the radiators, the cylinder space and where the outdoor unit could go.
- A fixed-price quote follows, setting out the system, any grant that applies and the VAT.
- Installation covers the outdoor unit, the indoor connections and the controls.
- Commissioning, MCS certification and a handover of the controls finish the job.
How to prepare
- Clear the space around the indoor unit, or where it will go
- Unlock any gate, garage or side passage we need
- Plan for pets to be kept clear during the visit

Advice
Before you call an engineer
Refrigerant is off limits for anyone without the right qualifications. Under the F-gas rules, engineers need their own qualifications and the company must be certified, and escaping refrigerant can cause cold burns. If you suspect a leak, switch the system off and call us.
For air conditioning, cleaning the indoor unit’s filters is the main job owners can do where the manufacturer’s manual explains how. With the power off, they lift out, can be vacuumed or rinsed and must be fully dry before they go back. For a heat pump, the main owner jobs are a clear outdoor unit and sensible control settings.
