Air source heat pumps in Ashtead
For an air-to-water heat pump, the price is £8,000–£16,000 (0% VAT on homes), before the grant. In England and Wales, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme offers a £7,500 grant towards an eligible air-to-water installation and the installer makes the application. Not every home qualifies, so we check eligibility before you commit. Common call-outs are for no space for a hot water cylinder and wanting to stop using oil, LPG or gas for heating, on radiator systems, air-to-water heat pumps and hot water cylinders.
Plenty of older homes in Ashtead can run on a heat pump, sometimes with larger radiators or more insulation. We work that out from a heat loss calculation.
For a fault on a system that may still be under warranty, send us the make, model and installation date. We’ll explain how the manufacturer’s terms are likely to apply before any chargeable work goes ahead.

How the job changes from property to property
Outdoor unit position and planning
Flats have tighter limits, and an Article 4 direction can remove permitted development rights. Listed buildings also need separate consent and we check what applies to you.
Heat loss surveys
Getting the survey right avoids undersized or oversized systems and that matters for comfort and running.
What we do, step by step
Our engineers arrive at the time agreed with you and check the plan with you first. Dust sheets go down over floors and anything close to the work, and the electrics are made safe before any panel comes off. The work itself takes a few days on site, depending on the cylinder, the radiators and the pipework involved. For a visit in Ashtead, tell us how to reach the outside wall or the outdoor unit.
- First, a chat about the property and your goals for the heating.
- The survey checks heat loss, emitters, hot water and the outdoor unit position.
- You get our view on the right type for the house, and on whether the Boiler Upgrade Scheme applies.
- Installation follows on the agreed dates.
- We commission it, complete the MCS certificate and show you how to use it.
How to prepare
- Let us know if the units are on a roof, a high wall or in a locked area
- Have the make and model of any existing unit to hand
- Let us know if the building has a permit or sign-in process
Getting a quote
Published ranges are a starting point; the quote is built on your property, because no two buildings, rooms or systems are the same. Once we have looked at the job, from pictures or on a survey, you get a fixed price. To start, ring 07833 053749 or fill in the contact form.

Landlords, agents and facilities managers
Running several properties is easier with one contractor. Our area covers Greater London and the South East, so a run of properties can go into one programme and kept to a regular schedule.
Under the GB F-gas rules, responsibility for leak checks is shared between whoever operates the equipment and the engineers who work on it. Where a building is let or managed, the lease or contract should make clear who looks after the system, and we can work for either side.
How we price air source heat pumps
Our prices page gives typical ranges, and your quote is built on your job. The quote depends on:
- Whether it’s a simple split or a larger system
- How far the pipework has to run, and where
- Whether we need access equipment for high-level work
Typical ranges are on our prices page, but each job is priced on what it involves. Call for a fixed-price quote, and we will talk you through it.
Before you get in touch
To speed up the quote, send us:
- A photo of the consumer unit with the cover closed
- Your installation or service records
- The postcode and whether it’s a home, flat or business
Photos are enough for some jobs; others need a visit first. Bigger systems, commercial sites and awkward pipe routes are normally surveyed on site. Either way, the quote is fixed before anything goes ahead.
FAQs for Ashtead
Do I need planning permission for a heat pump in Ashtead?
There’s no single answer: the building and the outdoor unit position decide it. Central Ashtead is a short walk from the Ashstead Conservation Area. A heat pump on a house can be permitted development if it meets the conditions, including the MCS noise check, but not within the grounds of a listed building, and in a conservation area the outdoor unit cannot face a road. Where needed, we check with Mole Valley council, which is normally the planning authority for Ashtead.
Is Ashtead in your area for air source heat pumps?
We do: Ashtead falls inside our working area. Get in touch with the details and we reply the same working day.
Are you F-Gas certified?
AirCon Doctor is an F-Gas certified company, NICEIC approved for electrical work and MCS certified for heat pumps. We are members of Checkatrade too.
Will I get records for the system?
Yes. It’s the record a manufacturer or the next engineer will ask to see: the date, the work, and any refrigerant added or recovered.
Do I need to service the system to keep the warranty?
For some brands, yes. Read the manufacturer’s terms, or send us the make and model and we will explain them and stick to the interval they set.
How much VAT is charged on a heat pump in a home?
Not on a home installation at the moment: until 31 March 2027 the rate is 0% in residential accommodation, then 5%. Businesses and hotels pay the standard rate, and for air-to-air systems we confirm the VAT on your quote. This is general information, not tax advice.
Can I get a grant for an air-to-air heat pump?
A £2,500 grant is available in some cases. It will not apply if the system is an add-on next to a boiler, and it must cover the whole heating demand.
