Air source heat pumps in Aldgate

Air source heat pumps for homes and businesses in Aldgate

Many air source heat pumps can be installed as permitted development in England, without a planning application. The conditions include an outdoor unit of no more than 1.5 m³ and compliance with MCS 020(a), and the unit cannot be used solely for cooling or sit within the curtilage of a listed building. We look at the planning position for your home during the survey. The work covers radiator systems, hot water cylinders and air-to-water heat pumps, and people most often call us about plans to switch to electric heating with a heat pump and questions about the Boiler Upgrade Scheme.

In a London area like Aldgate, many homes are flats or terraces with little outside space, and that decides which kind of heat pump works. Air-to-water needs room for the outdoor unit and normally a cylinder, while air-to-air units take less room.

We’re an F-Gas certified company, NICEIC approved for electrical work, with MCS certification for heat pumps and Checkatrade membership. Our engineers hold the F-gas qualifications needed to work on refrigerant.

How the job changes from property to property

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme covers England and Wales: £7,500 for air-to-water (and ground source), and £2,500 for air-to-air with strict conditions. The application goes through the installer.

Heat loss surveys

We look at walls, windows, floors, roofs and ventilation, and the size of each room.

What a heat pump looks like in Aldgate

VOA council tax data show about 48% of homes in the Aldgate area were built in 2000 or later, and about 90% of households live in flats, according to Census 2021 figures. Newer homes typically lose less heat, which tends to suit a heat pump well. Flats are often harder for air-to-water systems, so we look at whether air-to-air suits better. For a London home, the outdoor unit position and the MCS noise check need careful planning.

If your home is listed, like Mansion House about 0.5 miles west, listed building consent comes before any heat pump work. If you live near London Fenchurch Street station, the survey compares air-to-water and air-to-air for your home before anything is quoted.

What air conditioning won’t do

An honest diagnosis matters more to us than a booking, so here’s what air source heat pumps will not do:

  • A grant for a home that doesn’t meet the scheme rules
  • Tax rulings, which only HMRC can give
  • Getting planning permission or listed building consent on your behalf

Not sure which it is? You can phone 07833 053749 and we’ll tell you honestly.

Parts of the system we cover

  • Air-to-water heat pumps
  • Radiator systems
  • Homes heated by oil, LPG or gas
  • Hot water cylinders
  • Air-to-air heat pumps
  • Underfloor heating

The process

Every visit follows the same order: agree the plan on site, put the dust sheets down, do the work, check the system and talk you through it. On site, the work takes a few days on site, depending on the cylinder, the radiators and the pipework involved. Parking bays, permits and roof or balcony access are the first things we ask about in Aldgate.

  1. First we find out about the property, the heating you have now and what you’re hoping for.
  2. The survey measures heat loss room by room and looks at radiators, hot water and the best spot for the outdoor unit.
  3. We send a fixed-price quote that shows the equipment, the grant position and the VAT.
  4. We fit the outdoor unit and connect it to the heating, hot water and controls.
  5. We commission the heat pump, complete the MCS paperwork and talk you through the controls.

Preparing for the visit

  • Let us know if the units are on a roof, a high wall or in a locked area
  • Clear access to the fuse board
  • Name a contact who can meet us at the agreed time

What happens if it’s left?

The extra £1,500 for homes heated by oil or LPG with no mains gas is available until March 2027. If that applies to you, it’s worth asking about sooner rather than later. Getting the work done in Aldgate before summer avoids the busiest weeks.

The price reflects the work, not guesswork. That’s why we look at the job first, from pictures or on a survey, and why the quote is fixed before we start.

Questions from Aldgate

Is the heat pump grant available in Aldgate?

Yes, the scheme covers homes in England, including Aldgate, if they qualify. For an air-to-water heat pump the amount is £7,500; an air-to-air system can get £2,500 if it replaces the fossil-fuel heating outright, meets the home’s full heating demand and isn’t an add-on to a boiler. The installer applies, and we are MCS certified.

Is planning permission needed for a heat pump in Aldgate?

The answer turns on the property and where the outdoor unit would sit. Central Aldgate is a short walk from the Lloyd's Avenue Conservation Area. On a house, an air source heat pump can often go ahead under permitted development, with an outdoor unit of no more than 1.5 cubic metres and an installation that meets MCS 020(a), which includes a noise check. Those rights do not reach the grounds of a listed building, and conservation areas rule out walls or roofs facing a road. If that might affect you, we ask the City of London Corporation, which is typically the planning authority for Aldgate.

Can you look at a system you didn’t fit?

Yes. Systems fitted by other companies are fine from all the leading brands. Send us the make and model, and any records you have.

How long does a heat pump installation take?

A typical installation takes anything from a couple of days for air-to-air to the best part of a week for air-to-water with radiator changes. The programme is planned to keep time without heating short, and we explain it in advance.

Do you work in Aldgate?

Yes. We work in Aldgate and the rest of Greater London, within the London and South East area we cover. To book, phone us on 07833 053749 or write to us at info@aircondoctor.co.uk.

Can you set up regular servicing?

Yes. Maintenance contracts are part of what we do, with visits at the interval your system and the manufacturer need. Every visit is recorded, with F-Gas records where refrigerant work is involved.

Whose job is it to check the system for leaks?

The operator of the equipment, working with qualified engineers. Systems below 5 tCO2e fall outside the set leak check intervals, while larger ones need checks at least every 12 months, or every 6 months from 50 tCO2e. We’ll work out which band applies to yours.

From one of our customers

“Very professional from the initial survey through to installation. The engineer explained everything clearly and the quote was exactly what we paid. Would not hesitate to recommend AirCon Doctor.”
