Air conditioning in West Berkshire: how it works

Good air conditioning starts with the right system in the right place. We look at each room’s size, glazing, orientation and use, and we agree the unit positions and the route for the pipes, cable and drain, all before the price is fixed. Typical jobs include a home office that warms up with screens and equipment and a loft room or top floor that bakes in summer, on air-to-air heat pumps, wall-mounted split systems and VRF systems.

We book the visit for a day and time that suit you, and we keep you posted if anything changes. On arrival, the engineer compares the job with the survey, your photos or the details you gave us. Anything unexpected is raised with you before we go further. From there, the work takes about a day for a single-room system, longer for multi-room and ducted systems.

  1. We start by looking at the rooms, the walls and where the outdoor unit can go.
  2. We size the system for each room, then send a fixed-price quote with the units and where they go.
  3. On the day, we fit the indoor and outdoor units and run the pipework, cable and condensate drain.
  4. We connect the supply, pressure test the pipework and evacuate it before the refrigerant is released.
  5. Last comes the run-up: every mode checked, the controls explained and the paperwork left with you.

Near you in Newbury

In Newbury, that means homes and buildings near St Nicolas Church, Victoria Park and St Bartholomew's School, among other places. Also close by are The Diamond Tap (under half a mile north-east), St Nicolas C.E. Junior School (under half a mile south) and St Bartholomew's School (0.6 miles south-west). Newbury has its own railway station: Newbury station. Well-known places in the area include Donnington Castle (1.6 miles north-west) and West Berkshire Community Hospital (1.5 miles east). Green spaces nearby include Audrey's Meadow.

Where we install in West Berkshire

Our air conditioning work across West Berkshire takes in places such as Newbury, Thatcham and Burghfield Common and the smaller places around them. Every place on our West Berkshire list (155 in all) is covered.

Our area stretches from Greater London through Surrey, Kent and Sussex to Hampshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Hertfordshire and Essex, and West Berkshire sits within it. You reach the same people wherever you are in it.

Newbury: Shaw House, about 1 mile north, is one of the historic houses nearby, and if your own home is listed, consent comes before any air conditioning is fixed to it. Close to Newbury station? A small study or box room used for work can typically be cooled with a single indoor unit.

For landlords and property managers

Portfolio owners often want one contractor and one number. Our area covers Greater London and the South East, so a run of properties can go into one programme and kept to a regular schedule.

From a single flat to a whole estate, you get the same standard: diagnosis, a fixed price, access agreed with the people on site and paperwork at the end.

Why act early?

There’s a tax point for homes: HMRC zero-rates the installation of energy-saving materials in homes until 31 March 2027, after which the rate becomes 5%. HMRC says most air conditioning units are air source heat pumps, but each case depends on the facts and we confirm the VAT on your quote. This is general information, not tax advice.

Questions to ask before booking

  • Whether anyone has checked the property or the system first
  • What the manufacturer’s warranty covers and for how long
  • Whether a new circuit is included and who certifies it
  • Why the equipment they’re quoting suits the job

Looking after it afterwards

Aftercare is straightforward, and it makes the next visit easier:

  • Keep the handover documents somewhere safe
  • Use moderate settings for comfort and economy
  • Wash or vacuum the filters as the manual describes
  • Have the system serviced once a year

The handover includes the records you need: F-Gas records, commissioning details and the manufacturer’s warranty terms. File them together, because the manufacturer or a future engineer may ask to see them.

Report drips, noises or error codes early. A drip, a noise or a flashing light is often an early sign of a fault, and early repairs are usually simpler.

What air conditioning can’t fix

In fairness, there are a few things this work won’t fix:

  • Damp from leaks or a lack of ventilation
  • A lack of fresh air (most split systems recirculate room air rather than bringing fresh air in, which is a job for ventilation)
  • An installation that needs consent nobody has given yet

Your questions about air conditioning in West Berkshire

Who is responsible for leak checks?

The F-gas rules share it between the equipment’s operator and the engineers who work on it. How often depends on the size of the refrigerant charge in tonnes of CO2 equivalent: at least every 12 months from 5 tCO2e, and every 6 months from 50 tCO2e.

Will skipping a service affect the warranty?

For some brands, yes. Read the manufacturer’s terms, or send us the make and model and we’ll explain them, and book the service at the interval they recommend.

What does it cost to install air conditioning?

From £1,200 + VAT for a single-room split, with a typical range of £1,200–£2,200 + VAT. The price includes supply, installation, commissioning and F-Gas documentation and is fixed after a survey or from photos.

Will you need to do electrical work?

Most systems need their own supply from the consumer unit. Adding a new circuit is notifiable building work under Part P unless it’s done by a registered competent person, and we’re NICEIC approved, so we can install and certify it.

Which brands do you work with?

Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin, Fujitsu, Panasonic, Toshiba, LG, Samsung, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Hitachi and others. For a new system, we suggest the make and model that suit the property and explain why.

Which type of system should I choose?

The right one depends on how many rooms you want to cool, how much space there is outside and how visible you want the indoor units to be. Ducted units need a void or loft, and cassettes need a suspended ceiling and the survey confirms what’s possible.

Why does F-Gas certification matter?

Anyone installing, repairing or servicing the refrigerant side must be qualified, and their company certified. Ask to see proof before you book anyone and we’ll gladly show you ours.
