Air conditioning in New Forest

Most modern split systems run as heat pumps, so they can heat as well as cool. The Energy Saving Trust makes the same point: an air-to-air heat pump is what many people simply call air conditioning, so a well-chosen unit can be useful in winter as well as summer. Modern air conditioning heats as well as cools: in heating mode they work as an air-to-air heat pump, so a system bought for summer earns its keep in winter too.

For a home in or near New Forest, an air-to-air system can cool in summer and heat in the cooler months, which suits rooms the main heating doesn’t reach well, such as a garden room or loft.

Each manufacturer sets its own warranty period. Daikin, for example, gives a standard 2 years on split air conditioning, with longer extensions only on its air-to-water heat pumps. For any other brand, we explain the manufacturer’s terms on your quote.

Air conditioning in New Forest: local notes

About 84% of households live in detached or semi-detached houses, according to Census 2021 figures. Houses typically have a side or rear wall with room for the outdoor unit, and a multi-split can serve several rooms from one outdoor unit.

Most people start with the room that gets hottest, then add more rooms on a multi-split if needed. Around Church of All Saints, a quick check of the listing and conservation maps is part of planning any install.

How the job changes from property to property

Electrical supply

The fuse board is looked at during the survey, so any extra electrical work is on the quote rather than a surprise on the day. Older boards sometimes need more work to take a new circuit and we will tell you if yours does.

Outdoor unit positions

Noise is part of the decision: keeping it clear of bedrooms and boundaries where we can and fitted so vibration does not carry into the building. It can also affect whether planning permission is needed.

The process

We keep the work area tidy as we go, with dust sheets down and offcuts and packaging cleared up. If we need to drill through a wall, we agree the spot with you first. On site, it takes a day for most single-room installations, with multi-split, ducted and cassette systems taking longer. A few pictures help us make the most of a visit to New Forest.

  1. You send pictures, or we visit and survey the rooms and outside.
  2. Each room is sized and the unit positions agreed, then you get a fixed-price quote.
  3. We protect the area, then fit both halves of the system.
  4. Connections are made, checked for leaks and pulled down to a vacuum.
  5. It’s switched on, checked and handed over with its records.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Plan for pets to be kept clear during the visit
  • Mention any roof access, ladders or high-level work
  • Clear access to the fuse board

How to get a quote

Every quote starts with a look at the job, from a site survey or, where the job is straightforward, from photos and measurements. Then you get a fixed price so you know the cost before we begin.

Advice

When something else is needed

In fairness, some problems need a different answer:

  • A ventilation problem rather than a temperature problem
  • Damp from leaks or a lack of ventilation
  • Draughts and missing insulation

If in doubt, give us a ring on 07833 053749 or write to us at info@aircondoctor.co.uk and we will say what we think before booking.

Before you call an engineer

For air conditioning, cleaning the indoor unit’s filters is the main job owners can do, if the manual says so. With the power off, they lift out, can be vacuumed or rinsed and must be fully dry before they go back. For a heat pump, the main owner jobs are a clear outdoor unit and sensible control settings.

Leave the units and pipework where they are. Moving a unit involves the refrigerant circuit, so it needs an F-Gas qualified engineer, and the electrical side needs a competent person. If you need something moved, we can quote for it.

New Forest: your questions answered

Do I need planning permission for air conditioning in New Forest?

There’s no single answer: the building and the outdoor unit position decide it. There’s a conservation area, the Martin Conservation Area, close to central New Forest. A system that heats as well as cools may not need an application on a house, provided it stays within the permitted development limits. Cooling-only units get no such allowance, and listed buildings and road-facing positions in conservation areas need more care. We speak to the local planning authority (for New Forest, typically New Forest council) when it matters.

Do you cover New Forest for air conditioning?

Yes, New Forest is within the area we cover. Just phone 07833 053749 or send an email with a few details.

Will skipping a service affect the warranty?

It depends on the manufacturer’s terms. Some warranty terms require the system to be serviced regularly by a qualified engineer, so it’s worth checking. Keep every service record either way.

Do you work on all makes?

We work with the leading brands, from Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin and Fujitsu to Panasonic, Toshiba, LG, Samsung, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Hitachi. Send us the make and model if you have it.

How soon will you get back to me?

We reply to enquiries the same working day. For a breakdown that cannot wait, call our 24/7 emergency line.

Do I need a new electrical circuit?

Most systems need their own supply from the consumer unit. Under Part P, a new circuit has to be notified unless a registered competent person does it, and as NICEIC approved contractors we install and certify it as part of the job.

Does air conditioning work as heating?

Most of the time, yes: modern splits are normally heat pumps, so they can heat a room in winter. The Energy Saving Trust points out that an air-to-air heat pump is often just called air conditioning. We confirm the heating function of the model we quote.

What a customer said

“Very professional from the initial survey through to installation. The engineer explained everything clearly and the quote was exactly what we paid. Would not hesitate to recommend AirCon Doctor.”
