Air conditioning installation in East Grinstead
AirCon Doctor is based in East Grinstead, West Sussex. This is our home town, and it’s where we start every working day before heading out across London and the South East. If you live or work in East Grinstead, Felbridge, Forest Row, Lingfield or the villages in between, you’re close to us.
We install, service and repair air conditioning of every kind: wall-mounted units for bedrooms and home offices, multi-split systems for whole houses, ducted and cassette systems for businesses, and VRF for larger buildings. We also fit air-to-air and air-to-water heat pumps.
We’re an F-Gas certified company, NICEIC approved for electrical work, MCS certified for heat pumps and a Checkatrade member. We fit leading brands including Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin, Fujitsu, Panasonic, Toshiba, LG and Samsung, and we explain the manufacturer’s warranty for your chosen unit on the quote.
The process is simple. We look at the property on a site survey, or from photos for straightforward jobs. You get a fixed-price quote. We do the work, then commission the system, record the refrigerant details for your F-Gas records and show you how it works. A single-room split system is typically £1,200–£2,200 + VAT. Our East Grinstead cost guide explains what affects the price, and an annual service is typically £95–£150 + VAT.
We’re also a Checkatrade member, so you can look us up there before you get in touch. On VAT: HMRC’s Notice 708/6 zero-rates air source heat pumps installed in homes until 31 March 2027, and HMRC says most air conditioning units are air source heat pumps, but each case depends on the facts. We confirm the VAT on your quote. Businesses pay the standard rate. This is general information, not tax advice.
Old town, Victorian streets and newer homes
East Grinstead has a long history, and its housing shows it. The High Street has some of the oldest buildings in the town, many of them timber-framed and listed. Around the centre there are Victorian and Edwardian streets of terraces and villas, built as the railway arrived. Further out are interwar and post-war semis, bungalows and newer estates on the edges of the town.
Each type needs a different approach. In a listed or timber-framed building, the first question is whether listed building consent is needed, and the answer is usually yes for anything fixed to the fabric. We plan the least intrusive route for pipework and the most discreet spot for the outdoor unit, and our listed building guide explains the steps.
Victorian and Edwardian houses often have solid brick walls, high ceilings and bay windows. Big rooms need properly sized units, so we measure them rather than guessing. Pipes go through the wall with a core drill, and we route them to keep the front of the house clear.
Newer homes are usually the simplest to fit, with cavity walls and space at the side or rear for an outdoor unit. Well-insulated houses can trap heat in summer, especially in upstairs bedrooms and loft rooms, and that’s where a multi-split serving two to five rooms makes sense: typically £2,800–£4,500 + VAT for two rooms and £4,500–£8,500 + VAT for three to five.
Some homes in the villages around the town have no mains gas and use oil or LPG. An air-to-water heat pump can replace that boiler and may qualify for the £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant, with an extra £1,500 until March 2027 for homes on oil or LPG with no mains gas. Heat pumps are £8,000–£16,000, at 0% VAT on homes, before the grant. We’re MCS certified and apply for the grant on your behalf.
Being local means we can often fit a survey around your day, and servicing visits in the area are easy for us to plan. If your system is older and has become noisy or slow to cool, we can tell you honestly whether a repair or a replacement makes more sense. Our guide to system lifespan and replacement sets out the signs to watch for.
A recent job in East Grinstead
Cantelupe Road, East Grinstead (RH19)
- Property
- A four-bedroom detached house.
- Work carried out
- Installation of a Mitsubishi Electric MSZ-LN wall-mounted split system in the master bedroom and a second unit in the open-plan kitchen-diner. The property had previously relied on portable fans during summer. The installation required routing refrigerant pipework through the cavity wall and along the rear elevation to the outdoor unit, which was positioned on the patio. Both units were operational within a single day.
- Outcome
- The homeowners reported a significant improvement in sleeping comfort during the following summer and now also use the system for heating during autumn and spring, reducing their reliance on the gas boiler.
Planning and conservation in East Grinstead
Planning in the town is handled by Mid Sussex District Council. The district has 36 conservation areas, and East Grinstead’s was designated in 1971 and extended in 1989. The council’s conservation areas page lists them all and links to the East Grinstead Conservation Area Appraisal, which describes what makes the area special.
For houses outside those restrictions, an air source heat pump can be permitted development if it meets set limits. The Planning Portal’s heat pump guidance sets them out: an outdoor unit of no more than 1.5 m³, compliance with MCS 020(a), not used solely for cooling, not on a pitched roof, and not on a wall above ground floor facing the road. In conservation areas, it must not be on a wall or roof facing the road. Flats have tighter limits. A cooling-only air conditioning unit isn’t covered, so the council needs to be asked.
Because we’re based here, we know how much the old town and its surroundings vary from street to street. On the survey, we’ll tell you which route your job is likely to need and supply the product data, noise figures and drawings for any application. The council makes the decision, and we start once the consents are in place.
The new electrical circuit is notifiable under Part P. As the Planning Portal explains, a registered competent person can self-certify that work. We’re NICEIC approved, so we certify it and give you the paperwork.
If your house is listed, permitted development doesn’t apply to the outdoor unit, and listed building consent is a separate application from planning permission. It’s worth talking to the council’s conservation officer early.
Local businesses we look after
East Grinstead’s shops, offices, surgeries, cafés and industrial units all need cooling that works on the hottest days. We install and maintain commercial air conditioning for them, including server rooms, offices, shops and medical premises. Our air conditioning hire can help while a permanent system is planned.
Business systems need leak checks above the F-gas thresholds, refrigerant records and, over 12 kW, TM44 inspections. A maintenance contract keeps everything on schedule, and our 24/7 emergency line is there for breakdowns.
Many local businesses are small, with one or two rooms that get too warm in summer. A single wall-mounted or cassette unit is often enough, and we can plan a system that leaves room to add more indoor units later as the business grows. For larger premises, we survey the whole building and design around how it’s used. Older R410A systems can still be repaired legally, and our guide to the 2027 F-gas phase-down explains what tighter refrigerant supply means for top-ups.
For schools, surgeries and community buildings in and around the town, we plan installs around opening hours and holidays, keep disruption low and leave clear records for whoever looks after the building.
If you’re not sure where to start, call us and we’ll talk it through.
How it works
- Diagnose. We look at the rooms or building on a site survey, or from your photos for simple jobs, and work out what size and type of system it needs.
- Quote. You get a fixed-price quote with the make and model of every unit, the pipe runs, electrics and condensate route, and the VAT.
- Treat. An F-Gas certified engineer installs, repairs or services the system, with any new circuit done by our NICEIC approved electricians.
- Sign off. We commission and leak-test the system, keep the F-Gas records, explain the controls and go through the manufacturer’s warranty terms for your brand.
