A single room split system costs £1,200–£2,200 + VAT. Two rooms on a multi-split are £2,800–£4,500 + VAT, and three to five rooms are £4,500–£8,500 + VAT. Each of those prices includes the equipment, installation, commissioning and F-Gas documentation.

Diagnose: the survey
We look at the rooms you want to cool or heat, the outside walls, the best spot for the outdoor unit, the route for pipes and condensate, and your consumer unit. For a simple single room, photos are sometimes enough. The survey is where we spot the things that move the price: a long or awkward pipe route, high access, solid walls or an electrical upgrade.
Treat: the fixed-price quote and installation
You get a fixed price that lists the equipment, the work and any extras. Once you’re happy, we fit the indoor and outdoor units, run and test the pipework, and connect the new circuit. We pressure test and commission the system, record the refrigerant details as F-Gas rules require, show you the controls and explain the manufacturer’s warranty for your brand. That’s the end of the job, and the start of a yearly service plan if you want one.
Planning in East Grinstead
Mid Sussex District Council lists the East Grinstead conservation area, first designated in 1971 and extended in 1989. In a conservation area, an outdoor unit must not go on a wall or roof that fronts a road, or nearer the road than the house, if it is to count as permitted development. Listed buildings need listed building consent for external works.
Elsewhere in the town, the national rules on the Planning Portal apply. Householders can fit one without applying when the outdoor unit is 1.5 m³ or smaller, it meets MCS 020(a), it isn’t only for cooling and it’s not on a pitched roof. Air-to-air heat pumps are included since 2025. Flats have a 0.6 m³ limit and other conditions. A cooling-only unit needs a check with the council.
Grants for homes around the town
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme can contribute £2,500 when an air-to-air system becomes the home’s main heating in place of a fossil-fuel boiler and covers its full heating demand, or £7,500 for air-to-water. Until March 2027, homes heated by oil or LPG with no mains gas can get an extra £1,500 towards an air source or ground source heat pump. That may be relevant in the villages and rural homes around East Grinstead. We’re MCS certified and make the application.
VAT
Under HMRC Notice 708/6, qualifying heat pumps installed in homes are zero-rated until 31 March 2027, then 5%.
