Air conditioning across Portsmouth: what to expect

Any installation we do in Portsmouth follows the same process as everywhere else we work: a site survey, or pictures for simple jobs, then a fixed-price quote, the installation, commissioning and F-Gas records. The price is fixed up front and the records are handed over at the end. We are often asked to deal with a business premises that overheats in summer and a room that’s unbearable on warm days, on multi-split systems, wall-mounted split systems and ducted systems.

Refrigerant work is done by qualified engineers working for an F-Gas certified company, and electrical work is done by us as NICEIC approved contractors. So on the day, you do not need a separate electrician for the electrical side. On site, it takes about a day for a single-room system, longer for multi-room and ducted systems.

  1. We start by looking at the rooms, the walls and where the outdoor unit can go.
  2. We size the system for each room, then send a fixed-price quote with the units and where they go.
  3. Brackets go on, the units are hung and the refrigerant lines, cable and drain are routed between them.
  4. The electrical supply is connected, and the refrigerant circuit is pressure tested and evacuated.
  5. Last comes the run-up: every mode checked, the controls explained and the paperwork left with you.

Pricing in Portsmouth

One room or a whole building, the quote is built the same way: the work involved, the access and the equipment. You’ll have a fixed price before any work starts, and the quote sets out the VAT.

Every quote starts with a look at the job, from a site survey or, where the job is straightforward, from photos and measurements. After that, we send a fixed price so you know the cost before we begin.

Air conditioning around Portsmouth

Across Portsmouth, from Southsea, Milton and Landport to the villages, homes range from older terraces and cottages to new estates and flats. Each install starts with a survey of the rooms, the walls and where the outdoor unit can go, then a fixed-price quote.

Enquiries from Portsmouth get a reply on the working day they arrive. Breakdowns can go to the 24/7 line instead. Parts of Portsmouth are on or near the coast, where salt air is hard on outdoor units. We choose positions and fixings with that in mind.

Portsmouth: If your home is in one of the older streets near St Wilfrid, it’s worth checking whether it’s listed or in a conservation area before an install. Close to Fratton station? A small study or box room used for work can typically be cooled with a single indoor unit.

When it’s something else

In fairness, some problems need a different answer:

  • A room that cannot take an outdoor unit or pipe route without the landlord’s, management company’s or council’s consent (that consent comes first)
  • A building fabric problem such as single glazing or no loft insulation
  • A lack of fresh air (most split systems recirculate room air rather than bringing fresh air in, which is a job for ventilation)

How we price air conditioning

You will get a fixed price before we start. It’s based on:

  • The brand, model and parts involved
  • The pipe route between the units
  • Whether it’s a simple split or a larger system
  • The condition of any existing system

The pipe route, the height of the units and how we reach them all affect the cost. We take each of them into account, and the price is fixed before any work starts.

Asking for a quote

Photos let us diagnose from a distance. Try to include:

  • Photos showing the indoor unit and the space around it
  • A photo of the consumer unit with the cover closed
  • The outdoor side of the property, including any roof or flat area
  • Your installation or service records

Our prices page gives typical ranges, but your quote is based on your job, because no two buildings, rooms or systems are the same. Once we have looked at the job, from photos or on a survey, you get a fixed price. To get going, call 07833 053749.

Different systems, different jobs

Multi-split systems

Two rooms on a multi-split are typically £2,800–£4,500 + VAT, and three to five rooms £4,500–£8,500 + VAT. The pipe routes to each room make the biggest difference to the price.

Wall-mounted split systems

Single-room split systems are typically £1,200–£2,200 + VAT, with supply, fitting, commissioning and the F-Gas paperwork included. Where you sit in that range depends on the pipe run, access and electrics.

Why act early?

The best time to plan air conditioning is before the hot weather, not during it. A rushed choice is often the wrong size or in the wrong place, which is costly to undo. A survey now gives time to choose properly.

Questions to ask before you book

  • If the quote is based on a survey, photos or a diagnosis
  • What happens if the job turns out to be different on the day
  • Whether testing, commissioning and paperwork are included
  • What paperwork you’ll receive afterwards

Your questions about air conditioning in Portsmouth

How much does air conditioning installation cost?

It depends on the rooms, the system and the pipe route, but a single-room split is typically £1,200–£2,200 + VAT. Long pipe runs, difficult access, a new circuit and premium indoor units push the price up, while commercial systems are priced after a survey.

Whose job is it to check the system for leaks?

Responsibility is shared between the operator, normally whoever owns or controls the equipment, and the service technicians. The interval depends on the refrigerant charge, measured in tonnes of CO2 equivalent: at least yearly for 5 to under 50 tCO2e, and every 6 months for 50 to under 500 tCO2e.

Will you work on another installer’s system?

Yes. We look at it first and tell you what we find, including anything about the original installation that needs putting right. You get a fixed price before any work goes ahead.

Do you work on commercial properties?

Yes. From one rented home to commercial buildings, we work the same way: survey or diagnosis, a fixed price and proper paperwork.

Is the equipment covered by a warranty?

It’s the manufacturer’s warranty, which varies by brand. For instance, Daikin’s standard warranty on split air conditioning is 2 years, and we explain the terms for whichever brand you choose.

Where does the outdoor unit go?

The position is agreed on the survey, not on the day. It needs space around it to breathe and room for an engineer to service it, and a position facing a road can bring extra planning considerations. We explain the options and any permissions to check.

Can I have air conditioning in a flat?

That depends on the lease, the building and where the outdoor unit could go. An outdoor unit can sometimes go on a balcony, roof or rear wall, with consent and the survey looks at every option. This is general information, not legal advice.
