Air conditioning in PO16: how it works
Most air conditioning needs its own electrical supply from the consumer unit. Adding a new circuit is notifiable building work under Part P unless it’s done by a registered competent person, and as NICEIC approved contractors we can install and certify it as part of the job. Typical jobs include fans and portables that don’t keep up and expensive direct electric heating, on VRF systems, wall-mounted split systems and air-to-air heat pumps.
Each visit runs to the same pattern: agree the plan on site, put the dust sheets down, carry out the job, test what we’ve done and explain it all to you. The visit itself takes a day or more, depending on the number of rooms, the pipe routes and the access.
- We start by looking at the rooms, the walls and where the outdoor unit can go.
- Cooling loads are worked out room by room, and the written price names the make, the model and every position.
- The indoor unit is fixed in place, the outside unit positioned, and the connecting runs put in tidily.
- Once the electrics are connected, the pipework is tested for leaks and put under vacuum before any refrigerant flows.
- The system is commissioned and checked in every mode, and we hand over the controls, F-Gas records and warranty information.
Pricing in PO16
Leaving a fault or an overdue service rarely makes the work cheaper. Small problems, from blocked filters to slow leaks, tend to get worse, and a system working harder than it should costs more to run. If you are unsure, ring 07833 053749 or use the quote form and we will give you an honest view and a fixed price.

Local landmarks in Fareham
In Fareham, that means homes and buildings near Fareham Academy, Wykeham House School and The Lord Arthur Lee pub. Also close by are St John The Evangelist (less than half a mile south-east) and St Jude's Catholic Primary School (less than half a mile south-west). There’s a railway station in Fareham itself: Fareham station. Nearby you will also find Carron Row Farm Museum (1.7 miles west) and Knowle Hospital (2 miles north). Not far away are Portsdown Hill and West of the River Alver.
Where we install in PO16
In PO16, as across England, the same permitted development rules apply: cooling-only units are not covered, listed buildings need consent and conservation areas restrict outdoor units facing a road.
We reply to enquiries from PO16 the same working day, with a 24/7 emergency line for breakdowns. PO16 includes coastal places, where salt in the air speeds up corrosion of outdoor coils and fixings. Outdoor unit position and regular servicing both help near the sea.
Fareham: Homes near St John The Evangelist are a good example of where we look up the heritage status of the building before fixing anything to it. Close to Fareham station? A small study or box room used for work can usually be cooled with a single indoor unit.
Signs you need air conditioning
Rooms overheat mostly because of heat they gain during the day. Sun through large windows, roof lights and glazed doors is the biggest source in many rooms, and once the room has warmed up, it holds on to it into the evening.
Most people get in touch when they notice something like this:
- An old system that needs replacing
- Expensive direct electric heating
- Rooms that get too hot to sleep or work in
- A home office that warms up with screens and equipment
Let and managed properties
Landlords, letting agents and managing agents book us, not only the people who live or work in the property. Tell us who the contact on site is and who should receive the paperwork and we’ll copy in whoever needs it.
Under the GB F-gas rules, responsibility for leak checks is shared between whoever operates the equipment and the engineers who work on it. In a let or managed building, it’s worth agreeing who that operator is, and we can work for either side.
What owners can safely do
For air conditioning, cleaning the indoor unit’s filters is the main job owners can do where the manufacturer’s manual explains how. With the power off, they lift out, can be vacuumed or rinsed and must be fully dry before they go back. On a heat pump, the equivalent is keeping the outdoor unit clear and checking the controls.
Refrigerant is off limits for anyone without the right qualifications. The law requires anyone working on equipment containing F gas to hold the right qualifications, and the company to be certified, and refrigerant lines can cause cold burns. A suspected leak is our job, not yours.
When something else is needed
We will always give you a straight diagnosis, so here’s what this work can’t put right:
- Heat loss through very poor insulation (a system will heat the room, but insulation is a separate job)
- Damp from leaks or a lack of ventilation
- An installation that needs consent nobody has given yet
Questions from PO16
Does air conditioning work as heating?
Most of the time, yes: modern splits are normally heat pumps, so they heat as well as cool. The Energy Saving Trust notes that air-to-air heat pumps are sometimes referred to as air conditioning. We confirm the heating function of the model we quote.
Can you look at a system you didn’t fit?
Yes. We look at it first and tell you what we find, including any issues with how it was fitted. You get a fixed price before any work goes ahead.
Is the equipment covered by a warranty?
It’s the manufacturer’s warranty, which varies by brand. For instance, Daikin’s standard warranty on split air conditioning is 2 years and we explain the terms for your brand on the quote.
Why does F-Gas certification matter?
F-Gas certification shows a company is approved to work on equipment containing fluorinated gases, such as the refrigerant in air conditioning and heat pumps. In Great Britain, that certification is a legal requirement, not an optional extra, and we hold it.
Can landlords and managing agents book you?
Yes. From one rented home to commercial buildings, the approach is the same: survey or diagnosis, a fixed price and proper paperwork.
Can I have air conditioning in a flat?
Often, yes, but there are extra steps. Leaseholders normally need consent from the landlord or management company for an outdoor unit and holes through outside walls, so check the lease. Permitted development rules for flats are also tighter than for houses, so we point out anything that may need permission on the survey. This is general information, not legal advice.
Do you look at the job first?
Yes. Photos often do the job for simple work, while larger systems and faults that need testing are seen on site.
