Air source heat pumps in Winnall
We install air source heat pumps in Winnall and across Hampshire, and we’re MCS certified. There are two kinds: air-to-water, which heats radiators or underfloor heating and your hot water, and air-to-air, which warms rooms through indoor units and can also cool. We help you work out which suits your home. We’re often asked to deal with questions about where the outdoor unit can go and an oil, LPG or gas boiler near the end of its life, across radiator systems, hot water cylinders and air-to-water heat pumps.
For a house near Winnall, space outside is rarely the problem, so heat loss, radiators and the electrics are what we check.
Whatever the visit, you get a written record: commissioning details and F-Gas records for a new system, a note of the fault and the fix for a repair, or a service record. File it with the manual, because it helps with any later warranty question.

Different systems, different jobs
Air-to-water heat pumps
Flow temperatures are lower than with a typical boiler, which is why radiator sizing is part of the survey.
Outdoor unit position and planning
The outdoor unit needs a position with good airflow, a solid base and a sensible pipe route. We also consider neighbours and noise, as MCS 020(a) includes a noise check.
What we do, step by step
The visit goes in the diary at a time that works for you, and we let you know if plans need to move. On arrival, the engineer compares the job with the survey, your photos or the details you gave us. Anything unexpected is raised with you before we go further. From there, the work takes a few days for most air-to-water installations, with air-to-air systems often quicker. We load the van from the survey notes so the work in Winnall can be done in one go where possible.
- First we talk through the property and the current system.
- We measure heat loss for every room.
- We design the system, check the radiators and cylinder and look at the outdoor unit position.
- Cost, grant and VAT appear on one fixed-price quote.
- We install, commission and register the system under MCS.
How to prepare
- Have the make and model of any existing unit to hand
- Clear the space around the indoor unit, or where it will go
- Tell us about parking and loading

Every quote starts with a look at the job, from a site survey or, where the job is straightforward, from pictures and measurements. After that, we send a fixed price before any work starts.
Advice
Winnall: your questions answered
Is a heat pump in Winnall permitted development?
That depends on the building and where the outdoor unit goes. Central Winnall is a short walk from the Winchester Conservation Area. On a house, an air source heat pump can often go ahead under permitted development, with an outdoor unit of no more than 1.5 cubic metres and an installation that meets MCS 020(a), which includes a noise check. Those rights don’t reach the grounds of a listed building, and conservation areas rule out walls or roofs facing a road. If that might affect you, we ask Winchester City council, which is normally the planning authority for Winnall.
Is the heat pump grant available in Winnall?
Yes, the scheme covers homes in England, including Winnall, if they qualify. It gives £7,500 towards an air-to-water or ground source heat pump, or £2,500 towards an air-to-air heat pump that replaces the fossil-fuel heating and meets the whole home’s heating need. You don’t apply yourself: the MCS certified installer does, which is us.
Why does F-Gas certification matter?
Companies working on equipment that contains F gas must be certified by an approved body, and each engineer needs the right qualifications too. It’s how you know the refrigerant is being handled legally and safely.
How much time does a heat pump install need?
As a guide, it takes a few days on site, depending on the cylinder, the radiators and the pipework involved. We plan the work so you are without heating for as little time as possible and agreed before work begins.
What’s the difference between air-to-water and air-to-air heat pumps?
Air-to-water suits homes with radiators and a cylinder; air-to-air suits rooms that need heating and cooling. The survey helps decide. Both are part of what we install.
Will my radiators work with a heat pump?
Some radiators may be fine as they are, and some may need to be larger. Heat pumps run at lower flow temperatures, so radiators give out less heat, and the survey checks each one.
Do you protect the property while you work?
We put dust sheets over floors and furniture near the work first, and we tidy up as we go. Before we leave, we clear up and run through the work with you.
Common problems we fix in Winnall
Homes off the gas grid, heated by oil or LPG, are often good candidates to look at. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme includes an extra £1,500, until March 2027, for air source or ground source heat pumps in homes heated by oil or LPG with no mains gas, subject to the scheme rules.
Customers typically contact us after spotting something like this:
- Wanting to stop using oil, LPG or gas for heating
- Working out where a cylinder could go
- Checking whether planning permission is needed
Older homes near Church of St John the Baptist may need extra checks for planning and heat loss before a heat pump is designed.
What to look for in a quote
- Which VAT rate the quote uses, and why
- Exactly what the price includes, from supply and fitting to commissioning
- Whether a new circuit is included and who certifies it
Honest limits
A few issues sit outside what this work can do:
- Insulation work, such as loft or cavity wall insulation
- Disconnecting or servicing a gas boiler
- Tax rulings, which only HMRC can give
