West Hanningfield: your questions answered
Will a heat pump in West Hanningfield need planning permission?
It comes down to the building and the spot chosen for the outdoor unit. Historic England lists about 8 buildings and structures within half a mile of the centre of West Hanningfield. The permitted development rules for heat pumps leave out listed buildings and stop outdoor units going on road-facing walls or roofs in conservation areas. Anything outside the rules needs an application, and we raise it with the local planning authority (for West Hanningfield, usually Chelmsford council) first.
Does the Boiler Upgrade Scheme cover homes in West Hanningfield?
West Hanningfield is covered, as the scheme runs across England and Wales. Whether your home qualifies, and for how much, depends on the type of heat pump and the heating it replaces. The installer applies, and we’re MCS certified.
What warranty do I get?
It’s the manufacturer’s warranty, which varies by brand. For example, Daikin’s standard warranty on split air conditioning is 2 years and we explain the terms for your brand on the quote.
Do you provide F-Gas records?
Yes. It’s your proof of what was done: the date, the work, and any refrigerant added or recovered.
When will I hear back?
We reply to enquiries the same working day. For a breakdown that cannot wait, call our 24/7 emergency line.
Who has to arrange F-Gas leak checks?
Whoever operates the equipment, together with the technicians who service it. Systems below 5 tCO2e fall outside the set leak check intervals, while larger ones need checks at least every 12 months, or every 6 months from 50 tCO2e. We’ll work out which band applies to yours.
Do you offer maintenance contracts?
Yes. Maintenance contracts are part of what we do, with visits at the interval your system and the manufacturer need. Each visit is recorded, with F-Gas records where refrigerant work is involved.
Air source heat pumps in West Hanningfield
Until 31 March 2027, a heat pump installed in residential accommodation carries 0% VAT, with 5% from 1 April 2027. This is HMRC’s energy-saving materials relief, which applies to homes rather than businesses, and for air-to-air systems we confirm the VAT on your quote. Please treat this as general information rather than tax advice. We are often asked to deal with no space for a hot water cylinder and planning and permitted development questions, across homes heated by oil, LPG or gas, underfloor heating and air-to-air heat pumps.
Space for an outdoor unit is rarely an issue near West Hanningfield, so the design comes down to heat loss, radiators and hot water.
We’re an F-Gas certified company, NICEIC approved for electrical work, MCS certified for heat pumps and a Checkatrade member. Our engineers hold the F-gas qualifications needed to work on refrigerant.

Air source heat pumps around West Hanningfield
Valuation Office Agency council tax records show about 31% of homes across West Hanningfield and its surrounding area were built in 2000 or later, and about 77% of households live in detached or semi-detached houses, according to the last census (2021). Newer homes usually lose less heat, which tends to suit a heat pump well. Houses usually have space for an outdoor unit and a hot water cylinder.
With Hylands about 3.9 miles north-west, it’s worth asking whether your own home is listed before planning a heat pump. Older homes near Church of St Mary and St Edward may need extra checks for planning and heat loss before a heat pump is designed.

What you can do yourself, and what needs us
Before you call us about a fault, a few checks can save a visit: check the mode, the set temperature, the remote’s batteries and the breaker. If a breaker trips again after you reset it, leave it off and phone 07833 053749 or email us.
Owner care supports servicing; it does not replace it. Simple care keeps the air moving through the system, but the refrigerant circuit, the electrics and the parts you cannot see still need an engineer at the interval the manufacturer recommends.
What happens on the day
Where something has to be switched off during the work, we agree it with you first, so you can plan around it. In a business, work can often be done one area at a time. The work takes anything from a couple of days for air-to-air to the best part of a week for air-to-water with radiator changes. A few pictures help us make the most of a visit to West Hanningfield.
- We talk through your home, your current heating and what you want from a heat pump.
- On the visit we calculate what every room loses on a cold day, then check the radiators, room for a cylinder and outdoor unit options.
- We send a fixed-price quote that shows the equipment, the grant position and the VAT.
- The outdoor unit, the indoor equipment and the controls are installed and connected.
- The system is commissioned and registered under MCS, and we show you how to use it.

Advice
Honest limits
An honest diagnosis matters more to us than a booking, so here’s what air source heat pumps won’t do:
- Planning decisions, which rest with the council
- Grants for hybrid systems or replacements of low-carbon systems
- Improving the building’s insulation
If in doubt, phone 07833 053749 or write to us at info@aircondoctor.co.uk and we will say what we think.
Parts of the system we cover
- Underfloor heating
- Hot water cylinders
- Radiator systems
- Air-to-water heat pumps
- Homes heated by oil, LPG or gas
- Air-to-air heat pumps
What happens if it’s left?
The extra £1,500 for homes heated by oil or LPG with no mains gas is available until March 2027. If that applies to you, it’s worth asking about sooner rather than later. Waiting rarely makes an air conditioning problem smaller.
Height, access and the distance between the indoor and outdoor units all affect the cost. We take each of them into account, and the price is fixed before work begins.
