Air source heat pumps near Braintree

Air source heat pumps in Braintree, done properly

As an MCS certified installer, we fit air source heat pumps for homes in Braintree and the rest of Essex. There are two kinds: air-to-water, which heats radiators or underfloor heating and your hot water, and air-to-air, which warms rooms through indoor units and can also cool. We will explain which type fits your home and why. The work covers homes heated by oil, LPG or gas, air-to-air heat pumps and radiator systems, and the jobs we see most are replacing a combi boiler with a heat pump and radiators that may be too small for a heat pump.

Homes in Braintree range from older houses to new builds, and that matters for a heat pump. Every design starts with a room-by-room heat loss calculation, so the system is sized for your home and not guessed.

AirCon Doctor is an F-Gas certified company and NICEIC approved for electrical work, with MCS certification for heat pumps and Checkatrade membership. Our engineers hold the F-gas qualifications needed to work on refrigerant.

Homes in Braintree and heat pumps

About 39 miles out from central London, Braintree is part of the South East area we work across.

If your home is one of the older properties near Congregational Church, the survey checks whether it’s listed or in a conservation area before the outdoor unit position is chosen. Homeowners near Braintree station often ask whether a heat pump can take over from the boiler, and the heat loss survey answers that.

How the job changes from property to property

Air-to-air heat pumps

Since 2025, air-to-air heat pumps can also be permitted development in England, subject to the conditions. Cooling-only units are not included and need a check with the council.

Heat loss surveys

A heat loss survey measures how much heat each room loses on a cold day. It’s the basis for sizing the heat pump and the radiators.

The process

The first job on site is protection: sheets over the floor and any furniture nearby, and we ask before moving anything. After that, anything electrical is made safe and we start. The work on site takes several days for an air-to-water system with a new cylinder, less for an air-to-air system, and we clear up before we go. For a visit in Braintree, let us know where we can park and how to reach the outdoor unit.

  1. We start with your plans and the property.
  2. A survey covers heat loss, radiators, hot water and where the outdoor unit could sit.
  3. We recommend air-to-water or air-to-air and check the grant position.
  4. We install the heat pump and connect it up.
  5. After commissioning, you get the MCS certificate and a handover.

How to prepare

  • Find the manual or the paperwork for the system, if you have it
  • Name a contact who can meet us at the agreed time
  • Unlock any gate, garage or side passage we need

Braintree questions

Is the heat pump grant available in Braintree?

Yes, the scheme covers homes in England, including Braintree, if they qualify. The grant is £7,500 for an air source (air-to-water) heat pump and £2,500 for an air-to-air system that replaces the existing fossil-fuel heating. We hold MCS certification, so the application is ours to make for you.

Is a heat pump in Braintree permitted development?

There’s no single answer: the building and the outdoor unit position decide it. The Braintree Town Centre and Bradford Street Conservation Area is close to the centre of Braintree. Heat pumps on houses are often permitted development, but listed buildings need consent and conservation areas restrict outdoor units facing a road. Where it’s needed, we check with the planning department at Braintree council, usually the authority for Braintree.

What does F-Gas certified mean?

Anyone installing, repairing or servicing the refrigerant side must be qualified, and their company certified. It’s worth checking before booking and we will gladly show you ours.

Will you work on another installer’s system?

Yes. Systems fitted by other companies are fine from all the leading brands. Tell us the make and model and send any paperwork you have.

Which brands do you work with?

The main ones, including Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin, Fujitsu, Panasonic, Toshiba, LG, Samsung, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Hitachi. For new systems, we recommend a brand and model to suit the job and explain why.

What does an air-to-water heat pump cost?

For air-to-water, it’s £8,000–£16,000 (0% VAT on homes) before any Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant. Air-to-air systems are priced after a survey, with the VAT confirmed on your quote.

Whose job is it to check the system for leaks?

Whoever operates the equipment, together with the technicians who service it. Systems below 5 tCO2e fall outside the set leak check intervals, while larger ones need checks at least every 12 months, or every 6 months from 50 tCO2e. We can tell you which band your system falls into.

Aftercare tips

So the system stays in good health:

  • Find out the grant position at the survey
  • Book a yearly service
  • Leave space around the outdoor unit

Once commissioned, we register the installation with MCS and give you the certificate. Keep it with the manufacturer’s paperwork for future reference.

Let the heat pump run steadily rather than switching it on and off as explained at handover.

When something else is needed

A few issues sit outside what this work can do:

  • Insulation work, such as loft or cavity wall insulation
  • Formal advice on VAT for your situation
  • Disconnecting or servicing a gas boiler

Not sure which it is? You can give us a ring on 07833 053749 or drop us a line and we will tell you honestly.
