Air source heat pumps near Watermill

Air source heat pumps in Watermill, done properly

An air-to-water heat pump heats water to a lower temperature than a typical boiler, so radiators may need to be larger to give out the same heat. We check each radiator against the room’s heat loss and anything that needs changing is in the quote. We are often asked to deal with questions about the Boiler Upgrade Scheme and finding a place for the outdoor unit, across radiator systems, air-to-water heat pumps and hot water cylinders.

Homes around Watermill normally have room outside for a heat pump, so the design comes down to heat loss, radiators and hot water.

Think of the paperwork as the system’s health record: a dated account of the work and the readings we took. It makes the next visit quicker and any warranty question simpler and it’s worth keeping safe.

What owners can safely do

Keep a note of anything odd: an error code, a new noise, a drip, a smell or a change in how well the system heats or cools. It makes our diagnosis quicker, and a photo of the display helps even more.

Never try to top up, release or handle refrigerant yourself. The law requires anyone working on equipment containing F gas to hold the right qualifications, and the company to be certified, and escaping refrigerant can cause cold burns. A suspected leak is our job, not yours.

How the visit works

On the day, we arrive at the time agreed with you and check the plan with you first. Floors and furniture near the work are covered with dust sheets, and the electrics are made safe before any panel comes off. The work itself takes a few days for most air-to-water installations, with air-to-air systems often quicker. A few pictures help us make the most of a visit to Watermill.

  1. It begins with your house and the heating it relies on now.
  2. Every room’s heat loss is worked out on site.
  3. We design the system, check the radiators and cylinder and look at the outdoor unit position.
  4. You get a fixed price, with any grant and the VAT set out.
  5. We install, commission and register the system under MCS.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Mention any parking restrictions near the property
  • Have the make and model of any existing unit to hand
  • Give us access to the outside wall, roof or yard where the outdoor unit sits

Do you need air source heat pumps in Watermill?

Many people look at heat pumps when an oil, LPG or gas boiler is getting old. Starting early leaves time for the survey, the design and any grant application, rather than rushing a replacement in winter.

Most people get in touch when they notice one of these:

  • Checking whether planning permission is needed
  • Deciding which kind of heat pump suits the home
  • Radiators that may be too small for a heat pump

Every heat pump design starts with a room-by-room heat loss calculation.

  • Whether you get F-Gas records where refrigerant is involved
  • Why the equipment they’re quoting suits the job

FAQs for Watermill

Can I fit a heat pump in Watermill without planning permission?

There’s no single answer: the building and the outdoor unit position decide it. The centre of Watermill is in a conservation area. On a house, an air source heat pump can often go ahead under permitted development, with an outdoor unit of no more than 1.5 cubic metres and an installation that meets MCS 020(a), which includes a noise check. Those rights do not reach the grounds of a listed building, and conservation areas rule out walls or roofs facing a road. If that might affect you, we ask the planning department at Rother council, usually the authority for Watermill.

Will you come out to Watermill?

We do. Villages and hamlets get the same service as the bigger towns. A few pictures and the postcode are enough to get things started.

Can I get the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant?

Possibly. The scheme runs in England and Wales and pays £7,500 towards an eligible air-to-water or ground source heat pump, or £2,500 for an air-to-air system that meets stricter conditions. Until March 2027 there’s an extra £1,500 for air source or ground source heat pumps in homes on oil or LPG with no mains gas. The survey is where we check your home against them.

How long will it take to install a heat pump?

A typical installation takes anything from a couple of days for air-to-air to the best part of a week for air-to-water with radiator changes. The programme is planned to keep time without heating short and agreed before we start.

Do I need new radiators for a heat pump?

It depends on each radiator and the room it heats. At the lower temperatures a heat pump uses, radiators need more surface, and the survey checks each one.

Is there a Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant for air-to-air?

It can, as long as the system takes over the heating completely. An air-to-air heat pump can get £2,500 if it replaces the fossil-fuel heating, meets the full heating demand, is fitted by an MCS certified installer and is in a home; as an add-on to a boiler it doesn’t qualify.

Which brands do you work with?

The main ones, including Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin, Fujitsu, Panasonic, Toshiba, LG, Samsung, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Hitachi. For new systems, we recommend a brand and model to suit the job and explain why.
