How we handle air source heat pumps in Walton

An air-to-water heat pump heats water to a lower temperature than a typical boiler which means some radiators may need upsizing. The survey shows which rooms are fine and which need changes, and the quote sets it out. Common call-outs are for radiators that may be too small for a heat pump and choosing between air-to-water and air-to-air, across air-to-water heat pumps, homes heated by oil, LPG or gas and underfloor heating.

If your home in or near Walton is heated by oil, LPG or electric heaters with no mains gas, an extra £1,500 is available through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme until March 2027, on top of the £7,500.

Any work on the refrigerant circuit is recorded: the work carried out, the refrigerant involved and the quantities. Keep the records with the manual and the warranty documents, as a manufacturer or a future engineer may ask to see them.

Different systems, different jobs

Radiators and underfloor heating

Underfloor heating works well with heat pumps because it uses lower temperatures, and we can connect to it where it’s already in.

Air-to-air heat pumps

Since 2025, air-to-air heat pumps can also be permitted development in England, subject to the conditions. A unit used solely for cooling is not covered and need a check with the council.

The process

Wherever the system can be run before we leave, we run it and check it in operation. Then we show you what we have done and answer any questions, and anything that needs a follow-up is pointed out there and then. The visit takes a few days on site, depending on the cylinder, the radiators and the pipework involved. Seeing the property in photos first means the trip to Walton can be planned properly.

  1. It starts with a conversation about the home, the existing heating and your plans.
  2. The survey measures heat loss room by room and looks at radiators, hot water and the best spot for the outdoor unit.
  3. A fixed-price quote follows, setting out the system, any grant that applies and the VAT.
  4. The outdoor unit, the indoor equipment and the controls are installed and connected.
  5. We commission the heat pump, complete the MCS paperwork and talk you through the controls.

Preparing for the visit

  • Tell us about access, such as roof hatches, high walls or locked plant areas
  • Give us access to the outside wall, roof or yard where the outdoor unit sits
  • Find the manual or the paperwork for the system, if you have it

Getting a price

Our prices page gives typical ranges, but your quote is based on your job, because no two buildings, rooms or systems are the same. After a look at the job, by photos or a survey, the price is fixed. To start, give us a ring on 07833 053749 or send an email.

Walton: your questions answered

Do you cover smaller places like Walton?

Yes. Walton is within the area we cover across London and the South East. We are based in East Grinstead and plan each visit so the job can be finished in one trip where possible.

Can I fit a heat pump in Walton without planning permission?

The answer turns on the property and where the outdoor unit would sit. The Walton Road Conservation Area takes in the middle of Walton. The permitted development rules for heat pumps leave out listed buildings and stop outdoor units going on road-facing walls or roofs in conservation areas. Anything outside the rules needs an application, and we raise it with the planning department at Buckinghamshire council, usually the authority for Walton first.

Will skipping a service affect the warranty?

Each manufacturer decides. Where servicing is a condition, a missed service could give the manufacturer grounds to refuse a claim, so we explain the terms on your quote.

Who has to arrange F-Gas leak checks?

The F-gas rules share it between the equipment’s operator and the engineers who work on it. How often depends on the size of the refrigerant charge in tonnes of CO2 equivalent: at least yearly for 5 to under 50 tCO2e, and every 6 months for 50 to under 500 tCO2e.

What’s the difference between air-to-water and air-to-air heat pumps?

It depends on your home, your heating and whether you want cooling. Air-to-water can attract a £7,500 grant where eligible; air-to-air only qualifies for £2,500 under strict conditions. We explain the options after the survey.

Will you work on another installer’s system?

Yes. We look at it first and tell you what we find, including anything about the original installation that needs putting right. You get a fixed price before any work goes ahead.

Does the grant cover air-to-air heat pumps?

The scheme offers £2,500 for air-to-air, but the conditions are strict. Adding air-to-air alongside a boiler does not qualify, and it must cover the whole heating demand.

What owners can safely do

Leave the units and pipework where they are. Moving a unit involves the refrigerant circuit, so it needs an F-Gas qualified engineer, and the electrical side needs a competent person. Ask us to quote for a move instead.

Owner care supports servicing; it doesn’t replace it. Clean filters and a clear outdoor unit help the system run as it should, but the refrigerant circuit, the electrics and the parts you cannot see still need an engineer at the interval the manufacturer recommends.

Common problems we fix in Walton

Many enquiries start with a question about the Boiler Upgrade Scheme. Eligibility depends on the property, the system and the scheme rules, so we check before you commit.

These are the situations we see most often:

  • Questions about where the outdoor unit can go
  • Working out whether radiators need upsizing
  • Moving away from fossil-fuel heating

Period properties close to Holy Trinity can suit a heat pump, though insulation and any heritage protection are checked first.

What your quote should include

  • Whose warranty applies, and on what terms
  • The make and model of any parts or equipment being quoted
  • Whether you get F-Gas records where refrigerant is involved
