Air source heat pumps in Steel Cross

Air source heat pumps for homes and businesses in Steel Cross

Installing an air source heat pump in a home is zero-rated for VAT until 31 March 2027, then 5%. This is HMRC’s energy-saving materials relief, which applies to homes rather than businesses. For air-to-air systems, we confirm the VAT on your quote. Please treat this as general information rather than tax advice. The work covers radiator systems, homes heated by oil, LPG or gas and hot water cylinders, and common reasons people get in touch are a boiler that’s getting old and planning and permitted development questions.

For a home around Steel Cross that is off mains gas and heated by oil or LPG, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme adds an extra £1,500 until March 2027 for an air source or ground source heat pump.

Any work on the refrigerant circuit is recorded: the work carried out, the refrigerant involved and the quantities. Keep the records with the manual and the warranty documents, as a manufacturer or a future engineer may ask to see them.

Your questions about air source heat pumps in Steel Cross

Is Steel Cross within the area you cover?

We do. Villages and hamlets get the same service as the bigger towns. We’re based in East Grinstead and plan each visit so the job can be finished in one trip where possible.

Is a heat pump in Steel Cross permitted development?

There’s no single answer: the building and the outdoor unit position decide it. The half-mile around the middle of Steel Cross holds about 7 listed buildings and structures. On a house, an air source heat pump can often go ahead under permitted development, with an outdoor unit of no more than 1.5 cubic metres and an installation that meets MCS 020(a), which includes a noise check. Those rights do not reach the grounds of a listed building, and conservation areas rule out walls or roofs facing a road. If that might affect you, we ask Wealden council, which is normally the planning authority for Steel Cross.

Can you look at a system you didn’t fit?

Yes. We look at it first and tell you what we find, including any issues with how it was fitted. Any work is priced before it goes ahead.

How much VAT is charged on a heat pump in a home?

Homes pay 0% VAT on a heat pump installation until 31 March 2027, then 5%. Hotels and businesses pay the standard rate. Please treat this as general information, not tax advice.

Will you make a mess?

We start with protection: sheets over the floor and nearby furniture. Any drilling is agreed with you first, and we clear up the dust and offcuts when we finish.

Do you work for landlords and businesses?

Yes. From a single let flat to offices, shops and public buildings, the approach is the same: survey or diagnosis, a fixed price and proper paperwork.

Does servicing affect my warranty?

For some brands, yes. Send us the make and model and we will tell you what the manufacturer expects, and book the service at the interval they recommend.

System by system

Hot water cylinders

An older cylinder may not suit a heat pump, and we explain whether yours can stay.

Radiators and underfloor heating

Underfloor heating suits a heat pump’s lower flow temperature, and we can connect to it where it’s already in.

Leave it or put it right?

The two types suit different homes and needs. Air-to-water heats radiators and hot water, and can attract a £7,500 grant where eligible; air-to-air heats and cools rooms, and only qualifies for £2,500 under strict conditions, and we explain which fits your home. A dirty or faulty system works harder and costs more to run.

Our prices page shows typical ranges, but your price depends on the job in front of us. Call for a fixed-price quote, and we will explain what it covers.

What we do, step by step

Protection comes first: sheets over the floor and any furniture nearby and nothing is moved without asking you. After that, anything electrical is made safe and we start. It takes several days for an air-to-water system with a new cylinder, less for an air-to-air system, and we clear up before we go. Photos of the room and the outside of the property help us plan a visit to Steel Cross.

  1. We talk through your home, your current heating and what you want from a heat pump.
  2. We survey the home room by room for heat loss, and check the emitters, hot water and outdoor unit position.
  3. The price comes back fixed and in writing, with the grant and VAT shown line by line.
  4. We fit the outdoor unit and connect it to the heating, hot water and controls.
  5. We commission the heat pump, complete the MCS paperwork and talk you through the controls.

Before we arrive

  • Let us know if the building has a permit or sign-in process
  • Plan for pets to be kept clear during the visit
  • Make sure we can reach the outdoor unit, or where it will go
