Air source heat pumps across St Ives

Air source heat pumps for homes and businesses in St Ives

Many air source heat pumps can be installed as permitted development in England, without a planning application. Conditions include a maximum outdoor unit size of 1.5 m³, compliance with MCS 020(a), use for more than cooling alone and a site outside the curtilage of a listed building. We look at the planning position for your home during the survey. If the problem is moving away from fossil-fuel heating and choosing between air-to-water and air-to-air, we can help.

Homes around St Ives typically have room outside for a heat pump, so the design comes down to heat loss, radiators and hot water.

Think of the paperwork as the system’s health record: what was fitted or found, what was done and when. If anything goes wrong later, it helps the next engineer and the manufacturer and it’s worth keeping safe.

What air source heat pumps cannot fix

We’d rather tell you now than sell you work that will not help, so here are the limits:

  • Draught-proofing and insulation upgrades
  • Tax rulings, which only HMRC can give
  • A grant for a home that doesn’t meet the scheme rules

Not sure which it is? You can call 07833 053749 or drop us a line and we’ll tell you honestly before you book.

Parts of the system we cover

  • Underfloor heating
  • Air-to-air heat pumps
  • Air-to-water heat pumps
  • Hot water cylinders
  • Radiator systems
  • Homes heated by oil, LPG or gas

What happens on the day

Refrigerant work is done by qualified engineers working for an F-Gas certified company, while the electrical side is covered by our NICEIC approval. On the day, both are in the same hands. On site, it takes a few days on site, depending on the cylinder, the radiators and the pipework involved. Pictures of the space and where the outdoor unit could go let us plan the work in St Ives.

  1. You tell us about the home and what you want from a heat pump.
  2. We survey for heat loss and look at radiators, cylinder space and outdoor unit options.
  3. We recommend air-to-water or air-to-air and check the grant position.
  4. The system is installed and connected to the controls.
  5. The job ends with commissioning, the MCS certificate and a walk through the controls.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Keep pets and children away from the work area
  • Make sure someone can let us in at the agreed time

Owner checks or an engineer?

Owner care supports servicing; it does not replace it. Simple care keeps the air moving through the system, but the refrigerant circuit, the electrics and the parts you can’t see still need an engineer at the interval the manufacturer recommends.

On air conditioning, the filters in the indoor unit are usually the one part owners can clean, if the manual says so. With the power off, they lift out, can be vacuumed or rinsed and must be fully dry before they go back. For a heat pump, the main owner jobs are a clear outdoor unit and sensible control settings.

St Ives questions

Is the heat pump grant available in St Ives?

St Ives is in England, where the Boiler Upgrade Scheme runs. For an air-to-water heat pump the amount is £7,500; an air-to-air system can get £2,500 if it replaces the fossil-fuel heating outright, meets the home’s full heating demand and is not an add-on to a boiler. As an MCS certified installer, we apply for it on your behalf.

Do you cover smaller places like St Ives?

Yes. St Ives is within the area we cover across London and the South East. A few pictures and the postcode are enough to get things started.

How soon will you get back to me?

On the same working day you contact us. After that, we agree a survey, diagnosis or installation date that suits you, and you get a fixed price before any work goes ahead.

How do you keep the place clean during the work?

Protection goes down first: sheets over the floor and nearby furniture. Holes and fixings are agreed with you, and we clean up afterwards before we leave.

Will you work on another installer’s system?

Yes. We work on systems fitted by other installers as well as our own from all the leading brands. Tell us the make and model and send any paperwork you have.

Will skipping a service affect the warranty?

That depends on the brand. Where servicing is a condition, a missed service could give the manufacturer grounds to refuse a claim, so we explain the terms on your quote.

How long will it take to install a heat pump?

As a guide, it takes several days for an air-to-water system with a new cylinder, less for an air-to-air system. We plan the work so you’re without heating for as little time as possible and agreed before we start.

How we price air source heat pumps

The survey or diagnosis tells us what the work involves. The main factors are:

  • How easy the units are to reach
  • What we find on the survey or diagnosis
  • The type of system, from a single split to a larger system

The pipe route, the height of the units and how we reach them can all change the price. Each of those is built into the quote and give you a fixed price before any work starts.

What we need to know

A few details help us quote accurately. With your enquiry, please include:

  • The make and model of the system, from the label
  • A few pictures of the room and the wall the unit is on, or will go on
  • The postcode and whether it’s a home, flat or business

The quickest way to a quote is to send photos: the room or the existing unit, the outside wall or roof where the outdoor unit sits or would go, and the label on any existing unit. Tell us the address and what you need, and many jobs can be priced from that.

What a heat pump looks like in St Ives

The 2021 Census found about 86% of households in detached or semi-detached houses. Houses normally have space for an outdoor unit and a hot water cylinder.

Avon Tyrrell House, roughly 4.5 miles south-east, is a reminder to check your home’s listing status: permitted development does not cover listed buildings. Live in one of the older houses around All Saints? Expect the survey to look closely at heat loss and at the building’s planning status.

“Excellent service from start to finish. Two wall-mounted units installed in our home. Clean, tidy work: they protected all the floors and left no mess. The systems work brilliantly. Would highly recommend.”
