Sprat's Down air source heat pumps
We cover Sprat's Down for MCS certified installation of air source heat pumps for heating and hot water, with the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant applied for. Diagnosis first, a fixed price and proper paperwork when we finish.
- Deciding on the outdoor unit position
- Planning and permitted development questions
- Working out whether radiators need upsizing
Safe owner checks
On air conditioning, the filters in the indoor unit are normally the one part owners can clean, if the manual says so. They come out, get a gentle clean and go back only when they’re dry. For a heat pump, the main owner jobs are a clear outdoor unit and sensible control settings.
Write down what you notice: an error code, a new noise, a drip, a smell or a change in how well the system heats or cools. It helps us diagnose quickly, and a photo of the display helps even more.
Air source heat pumps in Sprat's Down
Until 31 March 2027, a heat pump installed in residential accommodation carries 0% VAT, with 5% from 1 April 2027. That follows HMRC Notice 708/6, and it doesn’t apply to businesses, and for air-to-air systems we confirm the VAT on your quote. Please treat this as general information rather than tax advice. The work covers radiator systems, homes heated by oil, LPG or gas and hot water cylinders, and people most often call us about questions about listed buildings or conservation areas and deciding which kind of heat pump suits the home.
Older and listed homes in villages like Sprat's Down need extra care, and permitted development doesn’t cover listed buildings, so consent comes first.
Nothing is signed off by word of mouth: commissioning details for an installation, a fault and repair note for a repair, or a record of the service. Keep it with the system’s paperwork so it’s to hand next time.

What we do, step by step
On the day, we arrive at the time agreed with you and check the plan with you first. Dust sheets go down over floors and anything close to the work, and the electrics are made safe before any panel comes off. The work itself takes a few days on site, depending on the cylinder, the radiators and the pipework involved. Visits to Sprat's Down are agreed with you in advance and planned so the job can be finished in one trip where possible.
- First, a chat about the property and your goals for the heating.
- We survey for heat loss and look at radiators, cylinder space and outdoor unit options.
- We recommend air-to-water or air-to-air and check the grant position.
- We install the heat pump and connect it up.
- The job ends with commissioning, the MCS certificate and a walk through the controls.
Getting ready for the visit
- Unlock any gate, garage or side passage we need
- Arrange for someone to be there to let us in
- Move furniture away from the wall where we’ll be working
Get a fixed-price quote
Photos are enough for some jobs; others need a visit first. Multi-room systems, commercial buildings and anything with a long or hidden pipe route are normally surveyed first. Either way, you get a fixed price before any work is booked.

Pricing air source heat pumps in Sprat's Down
The price is fixed before any work begins. It takes into account:
- What electrical work the job needs
- What state the existing equipment is in
- The brand, model and parts involved
Our prices page shows typical ranges, but your price depends on the job in front of us. For a fixed-price quote, phone us on 07833 053749 or send an email, and we will explain what it covers.
What to send for a quote
Good pictures often save a visit. Try to include:
- Where the property is and what kind of building it is
- The outdoor side of the property, including any roof or flat area
- Your installation or service records
The quickest way to a quote is to send pictures: the inside and outside of the property where the work is, plus the rating plate of any unit already there. Add the address and what you’d like done, and many jobs can be priced from that.
Air source heat pumps around Sprat's Down
Sprat's Down is within about 1 mile of the coast. Salt air is hard on outdoor units, so a heat pump near the sea needs a sensible position and regular checks, and some models offer corrosion protection for coastal sites. Census 2021 figures found about 78% of households in detached or semi-detached houses. Houses normally have space for an outdoor unit and a hot water cylinder. On the National Heritage List, around 3 entries fall within 0.5 miles of the middle of Sprat's Down; Ower House (grade II) is one. So the heat pump survey asks two extra questions here: is the home listed, and is it inside a conservation area?
Period properties close to St George can suit a heat pump, though insulation and any heritage protection are checked first. Historic houses such as Beaulieu Palace House, about 4.7 miles west, are a reminder that listed homes need consent before a heat pump goes in.
Sprat's Down is about 4 miles north of Cowes, in Hampshire. From the centre of Sprat's Down to the outskirts, we cover air source heat pumps, from small jobs to large ones. Our area takes in 683 places across Hampshire. There’s also a page for Worthing, about 41 miles away.

Keeping the system healthy
Systems last better with the right care. We suggest:
- Keep the MCS certificate with the manufacturer’s paperwork
- Leave indoor units unobstructed
- Keep to regular servicing
The warranty on the heat pump is the manufacturer’s, on its own terms. We explain the terms for your brand, including any servicing conditions.
Let the heat pump run steadily rather than switching it on and off, using the settings agreed at handover.
FAQs for Sprat's Down
Is the coast a problem for outdoor units in Sprat's Down?
It can, as Sprat's Down is within about 1 mile of the sea, where salt in the air is hard on coils and fixings. We site outdoor units out of the worst of the sea wind where possible and can suggest models with corrosion protection where the manufacturer offers it.
Can I get the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant in Sprat's Down?
Yes, the scheme covers homes in England, including Sprat's Down, if they qualify. Air-to-water and ground source systems attract £7,500. Air-to-air gets £2,500, but only where it takes over from fossil-fuel heating and covers the whole home’s heating demand. We hold MCS certification, so the application is ours to make for you.
How long does a heat pump installation take?
An installation takes a few days for most air-to-water installations, with air-to-air systems often quicker. The survey lets us set a firm programme, and you can ring us on 07833 053749 or drop us a line to book it.
Who is responsible for leak checks?
Responsibility is shared between the operator, normally whoever owns or controls the equipment, and the service technicians. How often depends on the size of the refrigerant charge in tonnes of CO2 equivalent: at least every 12 months from 5 tCO2e, and every 6 months from 50 tCO2e.
Can I do the refrigerant work myself?
Not the refrigerant work. The F-gas rules require certified companies and qualified engineers for it, and a new electrical circuit is notifiable building work unless a registered competent person does it.
Which accreditations do you hold?
We are an F-Gas certified company, NICEIC approved for electrical work and MCS certified for heat pumps. We’re members of Checkatrade too.
Is Sprat's Down in your area?
