How we handle air source heat pumps in South Ascot

In England, an air source heat pump on a house can often go in under permitted development rights. Conditions include a maximum outdoor unit size of 1.5 m³, compliance with MCS 020(a), use for more than cooling alone and a site outside the curtilage of a listed building. We look at the planning position for your home during the survey. The work covers radiator systems, air-to-air heat pumps and homes heated by oil, LPG or gas, and common reasons people get in touch are finding a place for the outdoor unit and planning and permitted development questions.

If your home near South Ascot has no mains gas, the grant can be bigger. Homes heated by oil or LPG with no mains gas can get an extra £1,500 on the Boiler Upgrade Scheme until March 2027.

Any work on the refrigerant circuit is recorded: the work carried out, the refrigerant involved and the quantities. Keep the records with the manual and the warranty documents, ready for the next service or a warranty query.

How the visit works

The work area is kept tidy throughout, with dust sheets down and offcuts and packaging cleared up. Any holes, fixings or cable routes are agreed with you before we drill. The visit takes anything from a couple of days for air-to-air to the best part of a week for air-to-water with radiator changes. We plan the visit to South Ascot from the survey or your photos.

  1. You tell us about the home and what you want from a heat pump.
  2. The survey checks heat loss, emitters, hot water and the outdoor unit position.
  3. We recommend air-to-water or air-to-air and check the grant position.
  4. Installation follows on the agreed dates.
  5. The job ends with commissioning, the MCS certificate and a walk through the controls.

Preparing for the visit

Homes in South Ascot and heat pumps

The middle of South Ascot is part of a conservation area. That affects heat pumps: listed buildings need consent, and conservation areas limit where the outdoor unit can go under permitted development. Where needed, we check with Windsor and Maidenhead council, typically the planning authority here. The Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures show about 30% of homes in South Ascot and the neighbourhoods around it were built in 2000 or later, and Census 2021 figures found about 66% of households in detached or semi-detached houses. Lower heat loss in recent homes often means a smaller heat pump and fewer radiator changes. Detached and semi-detached houses typically have room for the outdoor unit and a cylinder.

Historic houses such as St Leonard's Hill, about 4.8 miles north, are a reminder that listed homes need consent before a heat pump goes in. Live in one of the older houses around Church of All Souls? Expect the survey to look closely at heat loss and at the building’s planning status.

FAQs for South Ascot

Does the Boiler Upgrade Scheme cover homes in South Ascot?

Yes, if the home and the heat pump meet the scheme’s rules: South Ascot is in England, where it applies. The amount depends on the type of heat pump, and the survey confirms which applies. As an MCS certified installer, we apply for it on your behalf.

Do you cover smaller places like South Ascot?

Yes, and the size of the place makes no difference to how we work. A few pictures and the postcode are enough to get things started.

How do you keep the place clean during the work?

We put dust sheets over floors and furniture near the work first, and we tidy up as we go. Before we leave, we clear up and run through the work with you.

Who has to arrange F-Gas leak checks?

Responsibility is shared between the operator, usually whoever owns or controls the equipment, and the service technicians. The interval depends on the refrigerant charge, measured in tonnes of CO2 equivalent: at least every 12 months from 5 tCO2e, and every 6 months from 50 tCO2e.

What does an air-to-water heat pump cost?

Air-to-water work is in the £8,000–£16,000 range (0% VAT on homes), with any grant still to come off. Where you land depends on the size of heat pump, any radiators that need changing and the hot water cylinder, and air-to-air systems are priced after a survey.

What’s the difference between air-to-water and air-to-air heat pumps?

It depends on your home, your heating and whether you want cooling. The grant is £7,500 for eligible air-to-water systems and £2,500 for air-to-air in limited cases. We explain the options after the survey.

Which manufacturers do you install and repair?

Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin, Fujitsu, Panasonic, Toshiba, LG, Samsung, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Hitachi and others. For a new system, we suggest the make and model that suit the property and tell you why.

Why deal with it now?

Permitted development rules can change, and conditions vary between properties. We look at the planning position early, so there are no surprises, including conservation areas, listed buildings and Article 4 directions. A system that is left with a fault, or without a service, usually costs more to run.

Our prices page shows typical ranges, but your price depends on the job in front of us. Call for a fixed-price quote, and we’ll explain what it covers.

Safe owner checks

Refrigerant is off limits for anyone without the right qualifications. The law requires anyone working on equipment containing F gas to hold the right qualifications, and the company to be certified, and escaping refrigerant can cause cold burns. A suspected leak is our job, not yours.

There are a few things you can safely do yourself: keep the outdoor unit clear of leaves, plants and clutter, check the settings and the remote, and follow the cleaning the manual describes. Anything inside the units, the electrics and the refrigerant is engineer’s work.

A customer’s words

“Excellent service from start to finish. Two wall-mounted units installed in our home. Clean, tidy work: they protected all the floors and left no mess. The systems work brilliantly. Would highly recommend.”
