How we handle air source heat pumps in Soake
In England, an air source heat pump on a house can often go in under permitted development rights. Conditions include a maximum outdoor unit size of 1.5 m³, compliance with MCS 020(a), use for more than cooling alone and a site outside the curtilage of a listed building. We check the rules for your property as part of the survey. If the problem is working out where a cylinder could go and questions about where the outdoor unit can go, we can help.
If your home in or near Soake is heated by oil, LPG or electric heaters with no mains gas, an extra £1,500 is available through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme until March 2027.
Think of the paperwork as the system’s health record: a dated account of the work and the readings we took. If anything goes wrong later, it helps the next engineer and the manufacturer, so keep it safe.

Outdoor unit position and planning
Flats and blocks of flats have different limits, and Article 4 directions can remove rights. Listed building consent is a separate matter, and we check the position for your property.

What owners can safely do
Refrigerant is off limits for anyone without the right qualifications. Under the F-gas rules, engineers need their own qualifications and the company must be certified, and refrigerant lines can cause cold burns. A suspected leak is our job, not yours.
Before you call us about a fault, a few checks can save a visit: check the mode, the set temperature, the remote’s batteries and the breaker. If a breaker trips again after you reset it, leave it off and phone 07833 053749 or use the quote form.
How the visit works
Testing is the last part of the visit wherever the system can be switched on. Then we explain what was done and answer your questions, and anything that needs a follow-up is pointed out there and then. All told, the work takes a few days for most air-to-water installations, with air-to-air systems often quicker. Photos of the room and the outside of the property help us plan a visit to Soake.
- First, a chat about the property and your goals for the heating.
- A survey covers heat loss, radiators, hot water and where the outdoor unit could sit.
- We recommend air-to-water or air-to-air and check the grant position.
- We install the heat pump and connect it up.
- The job ends with commissioning, the MCS certificate and a walk through the controls.
How to prepare
- Move furniture away from the wall where we will be working
- Mention any parking restrictions near the property
- Arrange for someone to be there to let us in

FAQs for Soake
Is Soake within the area you cover?
We do. Villages and hamlets get the same service as the bigger towns. A few pictures and the postcode are enough to get things started.
Is Soake in your area for air source heat pumps?
Yes, Soake is within the area we cover. Tell us a little about the job and we’ll take it from there.
Can I do the refrigerant work myself?
Anything that involves the refrigerant needs an F-Gas qualified engineer from a certified company. That is a legal requirement, and manufacturers expect it for their warranty too. We are happy to quote for the full job, supply to commissioning.
Which accreditations do you hold?
F-Gas company certification, NICEIC approval for electrical work and MCS certification for heat pumps, plus Checkatrade membership. Engineers who handle refrigerant hold their own F-gas qualifications as well.
What’s the price of a heat pump installation?
Air-to-water systems are £8,000–£16,000 (0% VAT on homes), before any grant. Your price depends on the survey, the emitters and the hot water and the quote is fixed.
Does the grant cover air-to-air heat pumps?
There is a £2,500 grant for air-to-air, but only under strict conditions. The system must replace the existing fossil-fuel heating, meet the home’s full heating demand, be installed by an MCS certified installer and be in a home.
How much time does a heat pump install need?
A typical installation takes anything from a couple of days for air-to-air to the best part of a week for air-to-water with radiator changes. The programme is planned to keep time without heating short and agreed before work begins.

From one of our customers
“Very professional from the initial survey through to installation. The engineer explained everything clearly and the quote was exactly what we paid. Would not hesitate to recommend AirCon Doctor.”
