Air source heat pumps in Pleshey

An air-to-water heat pump costs £8,000–£16,000 (0% VAT on homes), before the grant. In England and Wales, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme offers a £7,500 grant towards an eligible air-to-water installation, and as the installer we apply for it on your behalf. Not every home qualifies, so we check eligibility before you commit. If the problem is radiators that may be too small for a heat pump and checking eligibility for a heat pump grant, we can sort it out.

If your home in or near Pleshey is heated by oil, LPG or electric heaters with no mains gas, an extra £1,500 is available through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme until March 2027.

Some manufacturers make regular servicing by a qualified engineer a condition of their warranty. Where yours does, a regular service with us keeps that side in order, and every service is written up.

Looking after it afterwards

Think of this as the after-treatment advice, in brief:

  • Book a yearly service
  • File the MCS certificate safely
  • Check eligibility for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme early

After commissioning, the installation is registered under MCS and you receive the certificate. Keep it with the manufacturer’s paperwork for future reference.

Leave space around the outdoor unit. It needs good airflow to collect heat from outside, so keep it clear all year.

The process

Anything involving refrigerant is handled by F-Gas qualified engineers, as the law requires, while the electrical side is covered by our NICEIC approval. On the day, both are in the same hands. On site, it takes a few days for most air-to-water installations, with air-to-air systems often quicker. Photos of the room and the outside of the property help us plan a visit to Pleshey.

  1. Step one is understanding the house, how it’s heated today and what you’d like to change.
  2. A heat loss survey works out how much heat each room needs, and we look at the radiators, the cylinder space and where the outdoor unit could go.
  3. You get a fixed-price quote, with any grant you’re eligible for and the VAT explained.
  4. We fit the outdoor unit and connect it to the heating, hot water and controls.
  5. Commissioning, MCS certification and a handover of the controls finish the job.

Before we arrive

  • Mention any parking restrictions near the property
  • Plan for pets to be kept clear during the visit
  • Clear the space around the indoor unit, or where it will go

Advice

How the job changes from property to property

Air-to-air heat pumps

A £2,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant is available for air-to-air only if it replaces the fossil-fuel heating and meets the full heating demand. It must be installed by an MCS certified installer and be in a home.

Outdoor unit position and planning

The outdoor unit needs a position with good airflow, a solid base and a sensible pipe route. We also consider neighbours and noise, as MCS 020(a) includes a noise check.

Pleshey questions

Can I fit a heat pump in Pleshey without planning permission?

That depends on the building and where the outdoor unit goes. The Pleshey Conservation Area takes in the middle of Pleshey. A heat pump on a house can be permitted development if it meets the conditions, including the MCS noise check, but not within the grounds of a listed building, and in a conservation area the outdoor unit cannot face a road. Where needed, we check with the planning department at Chelmsford council, normally the authority for Pleshey.

Does the Boiler Upgrade Scheme cover homes in Pleshey?

Pleshey is in England, where the Boiler Upgrade Scheme runs. Whether your home qualifies, and for how much, depends on the type of heat pump and the heating it replaces. The installer applies, and we are MCS certified.

Whose job is it to check the system for leaks?

The F-gas rules share it between the equipment’s operator and the engineers who work on it. How often depends on the size of the refrigerant charge in tonnes of CO2 equivalent: at least every 12 months from 5 tCO2e, and every 6 months from 50 tCO2e.

How soon will you get back to me?

On the same working day you contact us. Then we agree a date that works for you, and you get a fixed price before any work goes ahead.

How long does a heat pump installation take?

An installation takes anything from a couple of days for air-to-air to the best part of a week for air-to-water with radiator changes. We confirm the timing after the survey, so ring 07833 053749 or fill in the contact form to arrange one.

What warranty do I get?

It’s the manufacturer’s, and the terms are theirs. Some terms depend on regular servicing by a qualified engineer so it’s worth keeping the service records.

Can I do the refrigerant work myself?

Not the refrigerant work. Under the F-gas rules, it must be done by qualified engineers from a certified company, and a new electrical circuit is notifiable building work unless a registered competent person does it.

Homes in Pleshey and heat pumps

About 49% of homes across Pleshey and its surrounding area have been built since 2000, according to VOA council tax data, and about 72% of households live in detached or semi-detached houses, according to the 2021 Census. Better insulated, newer homes are often a good match for a heat pump. Detached and semi-detached houses typically have room for the outdoor unit and a cylinder.

Older homes near Church of Holy Trinity may need extra checks for planning and heat loss before a heat pump is designed. Every heat pump design starts with a room-by-room heat loss calculation.

How we price air source heat pumps

The quote reflects the job in front of us. We consider:

  • The number of rooms, units or zones
  • Whether it’s a simple split or a larger system
  • The brand, model and parts involved

Height, access and the distance between the indoor and outdoor units can all change the price. We take each of them into account, and the price is fixed before any work starts.

What to send for a quote

There’s no need for technical detail. It helps if you can send:

  • Any previous service or F-Gas records
  • The rating plate or label on any existing unit
  • Your consumer unit or fuse board

Getting a quote is straightforward. Send a few details and pictures, and we reply the same working day. Where a survey is needed, we arrange a time that suits you.

From one of our customers

“Very professional from the initial survey through to installation. The engineer explained everything clearly and the quote was exactly what we paid. Would not hesitate to recommend AirCon Doctor.”
