Air source heat pumps in Piddinghoe

Air source heat pumps in Piddinghoe

Many air source heat pumps can be installed as permitted development in England, without a planning application. Conditions include a maximum outdoor unit size of 1.5 m³, compliance with MCS 020(a), use for more than cooling alone and a site outside the curtilage of a listed building. We look at the planning position for your home during the survey. The work covers underfloor heating, air-to-air heat pumps and air-to-water heat pumps, and the jobs we see most are wanting to stop using oil, LPG or gas for heating and deciding which kind of heat pump suits the home.

Homes around Piddinghoe usually have room outside for a heat pump, so the design comes down to heat loss, radiators and hot water.

Some manufacturers make regular servicing by a qualified engineer a condition of their warranty. If that applies to your system, booking the service on time keeps the record straight and each visit is recorded.

Homes in Piddinghoe and heat pumps

Piddinghoe is within about 2 miles of the coast. Salt air is hard on outdoor units, so a heat pump near the sea needs a sensible position and regular checks, and some models offer corrosion protection for coastal sites. The centre of Piddinghoe lies within the Piddinghoe Conservation Area. 2 conservation areas lie within a mile of central Piddinghoe. Historic England lists about 15 buildings and structures within half a mile of the centre of Piddinghoe, including The Parish Church of St John (grade I). That affects heat pumps: listed buildings need consent, and conservation areas limit where the outdoor unit can go under permitted development. Where necessary, we check with the local planning authority (typically Lewes council).

Monk's House, roughly 2.3 miles north, is a reminder to check your home’s listing status: permitted development doesn’t cover listed buildings. Live in one of the older houses around The Parish Church of St John? Expect the survey to look closely at heat loss and at the building’s planning status.

Piddinghoe is about 1 mile north-west of Newhaven, in East Sussex. Our engineers cover Piddinghoe for air source heat pumps, along with the rest of East Sussex. Across East Sussex, we cover 289 places, Piddinghoe among them. Our Brighton page covers places nearby (7 miles or so).

Our nearest recent job to Piddinghoe was on Bridge Street, Newhaven (BN9), about 1 mile south-east: installing a Daikin precision cooling system with close temperature control for a production area where component quality was sensitive to temperature variation.

If your postcode is in BN9, the property is within reach. Brookside and Lewes Road and the roads off them are all inside our area. What we do, step by step

Protection comes first: dust sheets over floors and furniture near the work and nothing is moved without asking you. Then the electrics are made safe and the work begins. It takes several days for an air-to-water system with a new cylinder, less for an air-to-air system, and we clear up before we go. Work in Piddinghoe is booked in advance at a time that suits you.

  1. Step one is understanding the house, how it’s heated today and what you’d like to change.
  2. On the visit we calculate what every room loses on a cold day, then check the radiators, room for a cylinder and outdoor unit options.
  3. You get a fixed-price quote, with any grant you’re eligible for and the VAT explained.
  4. The outdoor unit, the indoor equipment and the controls are installed and connected.
  5. Once it’s running correctly, the MCS certificate is issued and we show you the settings.

Before we arrive

  • Mention any managing agent or landlord rules we need to follow
  • Have the make and model of any existing unit to hand
  • Let us know if the units are on a roof, a high wall or in a locked area

Ask for a quote

Our prices page gives typical ranges, but your quote is based on your job, because no two buildings, rooms or systems are the same. Once we have looked at the job, from pictures or on a survey, you get a fixed price. To get going, call 07833 053749 or send an email.

What you can do yourself, and what needs us

Keep a note of anything odd: an error code, a new noise, a drip, a smell or a change in how well the system heats or cools. It makes our diagnosis quicker, and a photo or a short video of the display is even better.

Refrigerant is off limits for anyone without the right qualifications. The law requires anyone working on equipment containing F gas to hold the right qualifications, and the company to be certified, and escaping refrigerant can cause cold burns. If you suspect a leak, switch the system off and call us.

After we’ve gone

How well a system lasts depends on use and care. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Check eligibility for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme early
  • Seal draughts where you can
  • Avoid switching the heat pump on and off often

Now and then in cold weather, the outdoor unit defrosts itself. You might see steam or hear the unit change note, and that’s normal.

Keep insulation and draught-proofing in good order because it reduces the heat the system needs to supply.

Your questions about air source heat pumps in Piddinghoe

Will you come out to Piddinghoe?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We’re based in East Grinstead and plan each visit so the job can be finished in one trip where possible.

Can I get the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant in Piddinghoe?

Piddinghoe is covered, as the scheme runs across England and Wales. For an air-to-water heat pump the amount is £7,500; an air-to-air system can get £2,500 if it replaces the fossil-fuel heating outright, meets the home’s full heating demand and is not an add-on to a boiler. The installer applies, and we are MCS certified.

Can you come out in an emergency?

Yes. If something urgent happens, like water coming from a unit or a critical room overheating, call our 24/7 line and we will agree what happens next.

Who is responsible for leak checks?

The operator of the equipment, working with qualified engineers. Systems below 5 tCO2e fall outside the set leak check intervals, while larger ones need checks at least every 12 months, or every 6 months from 50 tCO2e. We’ll work out which band applies to yours.

Do I get paperwork after the visit?

Yes. Each visit is written up, and any work on the refrigerant circuit goes in the F-Gas records. File them with the system’s paperwork.

Which accreditations do you hold?

We’re an F-Gas certified company, with NICEIC approval for electrical work and MCS certification for heat pumps. We’re also Checkatrade members.

Can I do the refrigerant work myself?

No, not the refrigerant side. The F-gas rules require certified companies and qualified engineers for it, and a new circuit is notifiable under Part P unless a registered electrician, such as a NICEIC approved contractor, does it.

What happens if it’s left?

Choosing between air-to-water and air-to-air is easier with the facts. Air-to-water works with radiators and a cylinder, with a £7,500 grant for eligible homes, while air-to-air heats and cools rooms and has a £2,500 grant only in limited cases, and we explain which fits your home. Booking before summer means the work in Piddinghoe is done before the hot weather.

No two properties are the same, so each one gets its own fixed-price quote. The equipment, how we reach it, the route between units and the work needed all make a difference.
