Air source heat pumps across North End

How we handle air source heat pumps in North End

As an MCS certified installer, we fit air source heat pumps for homes in North End and the rest of Greater London. There are two kinds: air-to-water, which heats radiators or underfloor heating and your hot water, and air-to-air, which warms rooms through indoor units and can also cool. We help you work out which suits your home. If the problem is checking eligibility for a heat pump grant and ageing boilers that will need replacing, we can help.

A terrace in North End shares walls with its neighbours, which helps keep heat in, as long as there’s a sensible spot for the outdoor unit and its noise is checked against the MCS planning standard.

Whatever the visit, you get a written record: commissioning details for an installation, a fault and repair note for a repair, or a record of the service. File it with the manual, because it helps with any later warranty question.

North End questions

Can I have air conditioning in a flat in North End?

Usually, yes, though leaseholders normally need the freeholder’s agreement. Permitted development rules for flats are tighter than for houses, so we check the outdoor unit position and give you the details to send to the freeholder or managing agent.

Can I get the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant in North End?

North End is in England, where the Boiler Upgrade Scheme runs. The grant is £7,500 for an air source (air-to-water) heat pump and £2,500 for an air-to-air system that replaces the existing fossil-fuel heating. We hold MCS certification, so the application is ours to make for you.

Do you cover North End?

Yes. We work across Greater London, Surrey, Kent, East and West Sussex, Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Hertfordshire and Essex, North End included.

Can you look at a system you didn’t fit?

Yes. We work on systems fitted by other installers as well as our own from all the leading brands. Send us the make and model, and any records you have.

Why does F-Gas certification matter?

Certification shows a business is approved to work on systems that hold F gas refrigerant. That isn’t optional: it’s required by law, and we hold it.

Are you F-Gas certified?

F-Gas certified, NICEIC approved and MCS certified for heat pumps, and we’re Checkatrade members. Our engineers also hold the individual F-gas qualifications needed to work on refrigerant.

Who has to arrange F-Gas leak checks?

The operator of the equipment, working with qualified engineers. Larger systems need regular checks: at least every 12 months from 5 tCO2e and every 6 months from 50 tCO2e. We will work out which band applies to yours.

Looking after it afterwards

Aftercare is straightforward, and it helps at the next service:

  • Check what your manufacturer’s warranty asks of you
  • Find out the grant position at the survey
  • Keep the outdoor unit clear all year

In cold, damp weather the outdoor unit runs a defrost cycle from time to time. You might see steam or hear the unit change note, and that is normal.

Heat pumps prefer steady, low-temperature running as explained at handover.

Air source heat pumps in North End: the local picture

About 52% of homes in the North End area were built before 1919, according to the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures, and the 2021 Census found about 62% of households live in flats. Older homes can lose heat faster, so a room-by-room heat loss calculation, and sometimes insulation or larger radiators, comes before sizing a heat pump. In flats, space for an outdoor unit and a cylinder can be limited, and the lease and freeholder come into it, so air-to-air is sometimes the better fit. London homes can be short of space for an outdoor unit and cylinder, which affects the choice of heat pump.

Heath House, roughly 0.3 miles south, is a reminder to check your home’s listing status: permitted development doesn’t cover listed buildings. Older homes near Church of St Alban the Martyr may need extra checks for planning and heat loss before a heat pump is designed.

System by system

VAT on heat pumps

For air-to-air systems, HMRC’s view depends on the product and the situation and the VAT is confirmed on your quote.

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme

There’s one grant per property, and you can’t get a grant to replace a low-carbon system, and hybrid systems are not eligible.

What happens on the day

Testing is the last part of the visit wherever the system can be switched on. Then we show you what we’ve done and answer any questions, and anything that needs a follow-up is pointed out there and then. The visit takes anything from a couple of days for air-to-air to the best part of a week for air-to-water with radiator changes. In a London area like North End, parking and access are worth sorting out before the day.

  1. It begins with your house and the heating it relies on now.
  2. Every room’s heat loss is worked out on site.
  3. From those figures we size the heat pump and decide on radiators, cylinder and outdoor position.
  4. You get a fixed price, with any grant and the VAT set out.
  5. We install, commission and register the system under MCS.

Before we arrive

  • Mention any managing agent or landlord rules we need to follow
  • Make sure we can reach the consumer unit or fuse board
  • Keep pets and children away from the work area
