How we handle air source heat pumps in New Barnet
An air-to-water heat pump heats water to a lower temperature than a typical boiler, so radiators may need to be larger to give out the same heat. We check each radiator against the room’s heat loss and anything that needs changing is in the quote. The work covers hot water cylinders, underfloor heating and air-to-air heat pumps, and people most often call us about working out whether radiators need upsizing and deciding which kind of heat pump suits the home.
A terrace in New Barnet shares walls with its neighbours, which helps keep heat in, provided the outdoor unit can sit somewhere that passes the MCS noise check.
Think of the paperwork as the system’s health record: a dated account of the work and the readings we took. It makes the next visit quicker and any warranty question simpler and it’s worth keeping safe.

Homes in New Barnet and heat pumps
About 32% of homes across New Barnet and its surrounding area were built between the wars, according to VOA council tax data. For homes of that age, the survey checks the insulation, the radiators and the hot water setup. For a London home, the outdoor unit position and the MCS noise check need careful planning.
For a home near New Barnet station, the survey looks at whether an air-to-water or air-to-air heat pump suits better. Live in one of the older houses around Holy Trinity Lyonsdown? Expect the survey to look closely at heat loss and at the building’s planning status.

Safe owner checks
Never try to top up, release or handle refrigerant yourself. The law requires anyone working on equipment containing F gas to hold the right qualifications, and the company to be certified, and escaping refrigerant can cause cold burns. A suspected leak is our job, not yours.
Write down what you notice: an error code, a new noise, a drip, a smell or a change in how well the system heats or cools. It helps us diagnose quickly, and a photo or a short video of the display is even better.
Common questions in New Barnet
Can I get the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant in New Barnet?
Yes, if the home and the heat pump meet the scheme’s rules: New Barnet is in England, where it applies. Whether your home qualifies, and for how much, depends on the type of heat pump and the heating it replaces. You don’t apply yourself: the MCS certified installer does, which is us.
Do I need permission to put air conditioning in my flat in New Barnet?
Often, yes, but the lease and the freeholder typically have a say. We look at where the outdoor unit could go, such as a balcony, flat roof or rear wall, and write it up for the freeholder or agent.
Who is responsible for leak checks?
Responsibility is shared between the operator, normally whoever owns or controls the equipment, and the service technicians. The interval depends on the refrigerant charge, measured in tonnes of CO2 equivalent: at least yearly for 5 to under 50 tCO2e, and every 6 months for 50 to under 500 tCO2e.
What does F-Gas certified mean?
F-Gas certification shows a company is approved to work on equipment containing fluorinated gases, such as the refrigerant in air conditioning and heat pumps. That is not optional: it’s required by law, and AirCon Doctor is certified.
Do you work on commercial properties?
Yes. Homeowners, landlords, agents and businesses all book us across London and the South East. Let us know who the records should go to.
How much does an air source heat pump cost?
An air-to-water heat pump costs £8,000–£16,000 (0% VAT on homes) before the grant. Eligible homes in England and Wales can get £7,500 through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, and we confirm eligibility before you commit.
Which type of heat pump is right for my home?
The right choice depends on the property and what you need. Air-to-water can attract a £7,500 grant where eligible; air-to-air only qualifies for £2,500 under strict conditions. We explain the options after the survey.
What air conditioning will not do
We’d rather tell you now than sell you work that will not help, so here are the limits:
- Planning approval where permitted development doesn’t apply
- Insulation work, such as loft or cavity wall insulation
- Formal advice on VAT for your situation
Not sure which it is? You can call 07833 053749 or email us and we will tell you honestly before you book.
Where we work
- Underfloor heating
- Hot water cylinders
- Air-to-water heat pumps
- Homes heated by oil, LPG or gas
- Air-to-air heat pumps

What we do, step by step
The visit has three parts, a bit like a doctor’s appointment: diagnose, treat and sign off. First comes a careful look at the system or the space, then we do the work, and finally we test, record and explain. The middle part takes longest, and that takes from a couple of days to around a week, depending on the system and how much of the heating changes. For a job in New Barnet, tell us about parking, permits and access to the building when you get in touch.
- We find out about your home and the heating you have now.
- We measure heat loss for every room.
- We design the system, check the radiators and cylinder and look at the outdoor unit position.
- Cost, grant and VAT appear on one fixed-price quote.
- Then it’s fitted, commissioned and registered with MCS.
Getting ready for the visit
- Tell us about access, such as roof hatches, high walls or locked plant areas
- Let us know where the consumer unit is
- Let us know where we can park and unload
How to get a quote
Photos are enough for some jobs; others need a visit first. Multi-room systems, commercial buildings and anything with a long or hidden pipe route are normally surveyed first. Either way, you get a fixed price before any work is booked.

What a customer said
“Office air con broke down in the July heatwave. Called at 8am, engineer was here by noon and fixed within 2 hours. Brilliant emergency response. They now hold the service contract for the whole building.”
