About our air source heat pumps in Malting Green

A £2,500 grant is available for some air-to-air heat pumps, with conditions. The system must replace the existing fossil-fuel heating and meet the home’s full heating demand, it must be installed by an MCS certified installer, and it must be in a home, so an add-on next to a boiler is not eligible. Common call-outs are for comparing heat pump types and ageing boilers that will need replacing, on radiator systems, air-to-water heat pumps and hot water cylinders.

Homes around Malting Green normally have room outside for a heat pump, so the design comes down to heat loss, radiators and hot water.

Warranty periods vary by brand and by product. Daikin, for example, gives a standard 2 years on split air conditioning, with longer extensions only on its air-to-water heat pumps. Whatever the brand, the manufacturer’s terms are explained on your quote.

Rented and managed buildings

Keeping records across a portfolio is half the battle. Every visit is written up, with F-Gas records wherever refrigerant work is involved, ready for a tenant, a buyer or an inspection.

The F-gas rules share responsibility for leak checking between the equipment’s operator and the service technicians. Where a building is let or managed, the lease or contract should make clear who looks after the system and we’re happy to deal with whoever it is.

Common questions in Malting Green

Will you come out to Malting Green?

We do. Villages and hamlets get the same service as the bigger towns. Send a few details and pictures, and we reply the same working day.

Is the heat pump grant available in Malting Green?

Malting Green is in England, where the Boiler Upgrade Scheme runs. It gives £7,500 towards an air-to-water or ground source heat pump, or £2,500 towards an air-to-air heat pump that replaces the fossil-fuel heating and meets the whole home’s heating need. You do not apply yourself: the MCS certified installer does, which is us.

What accreditations do you have?

We are an F-Gas certified company, with NICEIC approval for electrical work and MCS certification for heat pumps. We are members of Checkatrade too.

What warranty do I get?

It’s the manufacturer’s, and the terms are theirs. Some terms depend on regular servicing by a qualified engineer so it’s worth keeping the service records.

Can I do any of the installation myself?

No, not the refrigerant side. Under the F-gas rules, it must be done by qualified engineers from a certified company, and a new electrical circuit is notifiable building work unless a registered competent person does it.

Which manufacturers do you install and repair?

Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin, Fujitsu, Panasonic, Toshiba, LG, Samsung, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Hitachi and others. For a new system, we suggest the make and model that suit the property and explain why.

How long does a heat pump installation take?

As a guide, it takes from a couple of days to around a week, depending on the system and how much of the heating changes. We plan the work so you are without heating for as little time as possible and agreed before we start.

What you can do yourself, and what needs us

There are a few things you can safely do yourself: keep the outdoor unit clear of leaves, plants and clutter, check the settings and the remote, and follow the cleaning the manual describes. Anything inside the units, the electrics and the refrigerant is engineer’s work.

Don’t move, re-route or disconnect units or pipework yourself. Moving a unit involves the refrigerant circuit, so it needs an F-Gas qualified engineer, and the electrical side needs a competent person. If you need something moved, we can quote for it.

How the visit works

Testing is the last part of the visit wherever the system can be switched on. Then we show you what we have done and answer any questions, and anything that needs a follow-up is pointed out there and then. The visit takes anything from a couple of days for air-to-air to the best part of a week for air-to-water with radiator changes. We agree a date with you and plan the visit to Malting Green so we arrive with what’s needed.

  1. We find out about your home and the heating you have now.
  2. Every room’s heat loss is worked out on site.
  3. From those figures we size the heat pump and decide on radiators, cylinder and outdoor position.
  4. Cost, grant and VAT appear on one fixed-price quote.
  5. Then it’s fitted, commissioned and registered with MCS.

How to prepare

  • Let us know where we can park and unload
  • Keep pets out of the rooms we’re working in
  • Dig out any previous service or F-Gas records

Ask for a quote

Photos are the fastest route to a quote: the room or the existing unit, the outside wall or roof where the outdoor unit sits or would go, and the label on any existing unit. Add the address and what you’d like done, and many jobs can be priced from that.

Air source heat pumps around Malting Green

About 90% of households live in detached or semi-detached houses, according to the 2021 Census. Houses usually have space for an outdoor unit and a hot water cylinder. Listed buildings are part of the picture here: about 9 within half a mile of the centre, such as Malting Green House (grade II*). So the heat pump survey asks two extra questions here: is the home listed, and is it inside a conservation area?

If your home is one of the older properties near Church of St Andrew, the survey checks whether it’s listed or in a conservation area before the outdoor unit position is chosen. Historic houses such as Layer Marney Tower, about 3.7 miles south-west, are a reminder that listed homes need consent before a heat pump goes in.

Looking after your system

A little care keeps the system in better shape. We recommend:

  • Seal draughts where you can
  • Keep to regular servicing
  • File the MCS certificate safely

Where we applied for a Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant, we keep you informed through the process since the grant goes through the installer.

Keep insulation and draught-proofing in good order, as lower heat loss means the system has less to do.

A customer’s words

“Office air con broke down in the July heatwave. Called at 8am, engineer was here by noon and fixed within 2 hours. Brilliant emergency response. They now hold the service contract for the whole building.”
