Air source heat pumps for homes and businesses in Birch

Until 31 March 2027, a heat pump installed in residential accommodation carries 0% VAT, with 5% from 1 April 2027. That follows HMRC Notice 708/6, and it does not apply to businesses. For air-to-air systems, we confirm the VAT on your quote. This is general information, not tax advice. Typical jobs include choosing between air-to-water and air-to-air and working out whether radiators need upsizing, across homes heated by oil, LPG or gas, underfloor heating and air-to-air heat pumps.

Homes around Birch usually have room outside for a heat pump, so the design comes down to heat loss, radiators and hot water.

AirCon Doctor is an F-Gas certified company and NICEIC approved for electrical work, with MCS certification for heat pumps and Checkatrade membership. Refrigerant work is done by engineers who hold the F-gas qualifications the law requires.

Common questions in Birch

Is the heat pump grant available in Birch?

Birch is covered, as the scheme runs across England and Wales. For an air-to-water heat pump the amount is £7,500; an air-to-air system can get £2,500 if it replaces the fossil-fuel heating outright, meets the home’s full heating demand and isn’t an add-on to a boiler. As an MCS certified installer, we apply for it on your behalf.

Will a heat pump in Birch need planning permission?

It comes down to the building and the spot chosen for the outdoor unit. The centre of Birch is in the Birch Conservation Area. A heat pump on a house can be permitted development if it meets the conditions, including the MCS noise check, but not within the grounds of a listed building, and in a conservation area the outdoor unit can’t face a road. Where necessary, we check with Colchester council, which is normally the planning authority for Birch.

What accreditations do you have?

We hold F-Gas company certification, which the law requires for any business working on refrigerant. We are also NICEIC approved, MCS certified for heat pumps and Checkatrade members.

Do you offer maintenance contracts?

Yes. We offer maintenance contracts, set at the interval the system and the manufacturer’s terms need. Every visit is recorded and F-Gas records kept where they apply.

Are my radiators big enough for a heat pump?

It depends on each radiator and the room it heats. Heat pumps run at lower flow temperatures, so radiators give out less heat so we check every radiator against the room’s heat loss.

Do you work in Birch?

Yes. We cover Birch and the rest of Essex, within the London and South East area we cover. For a fixed-price quote, ring us on 07833 053749.

Do you work on systems someone else installed?

Yes. Systems fitted by other companies are fine, on all the main brands. Tell us the make and model and send any paperwork you have.

How the job changes from property to property

Heat loss surveys

Without a proper survey, a heat pump can be too big or too small, and both cause problems.

Air-to-air heat pumps

The £2,500 grant for air-to-air applies only when the system replaces the fossil-fuel heating and covers the whole home’s demand. It must be installed by an MCS certified installer and be in a home.

Safe owner checks

Do not move, re-route or disconnect units or pipework yourself. Moving a unit involves the refrigerant circuit, so it needs an F-Gas qualified engineer, and the electrics need care too. If you need something moved, we can quote for it.

Some faults have simple causes you can check first: is the system in the right mode, is the set temperature sensible, are the remote’s batteries working and has the breaker tripped. If the breaker trips a second time, leave it off and phone us on 07833 053749 or send an email.

Aftercare tips

A little care keeps the system in better shape. Our advice:

  • Book a yearly service
  • Leave indoor units unobstructed
  • Avoid switching the heat pump on and off often

In cold, damp weather the outdoor unit runs a defrost cycle from time to time. It may give off steam or sound different for a few minutes, and that is normal.

Book a service every year. Check the manufacturer’s terms, as they may include servicing conditions.

How the visit works

There’s very little for you to do on the day. Just let us in and point us to the units, or to where they’ll be fitted, and we take it from there. Before we leave, the area is tidied and we explain what we have done. Photos of the room and the outside of the property help us plan a visit to Birch.

  1. Step one is understanding the house, how it’s heated today and what you’d like to change.
  2. We survey the home room by room for heat loss, and check the emitters, hot water and outdoor unit position.
  3. A fixed-price quote follows, setting out the system, any grant that applies and the VAT.
  4. Installation covers the outdoor unit, the indoor connections and the controls.
  5. Commissioning, MCS certification and a handover of the controls finish the job.

Before we arrive

  • Clear access to the fuse board
  • Let us know if the building has a permit or sign-in process
  • Have the make and model of any existing unit to hand

Ask for a quote

Quoting starts with a diagnosis, either on a site survey or, for simple jobs, from your pictures and details. After that, we send a fixed price so you know the cost before we begin.
