Common problems we fix in Longlands

Many enquiries start with a question about the Boiler Upgrade Scheme. Eligibility depends on the property, the system and the scheme rules, so we check before you commit.

Look out for any of the following:

  • An oil, LPG or gas boiler near the end of its life
  • Replacing a combi boiler with a heat pump
  • Moving away from fossil-fuel heating

If your home is one of the older properties near Christ Church, the survey checks whether it’s listed or in a conservation area before the outdoor unit position is chosen.

Questions to ask before you book

  • What happens if the job turns out to be different on the day
  • Exactly what the price includes, from supply and fitting to commissioning
  • Which VAT rate the quote uses, and why

Choosing an air con installer

Air source heat pumps for homes and businesses in Longlands

As an MCS certified installer, we fit air source heat pumps for homes in Longlands and the rest of Greater London. Air-to-water systems feed your radiators or underfloor heating and hot water cylinder, while air-to-air systems heat rooms directly through indoor units and can cool them too. We’ll explain which type fits your home and why. We’re often asked to deal with replacing a combi boiler with a heat pump and choosing between air-to-water and air-to-air, on hot water cylinders, homes heated by oil, LPG or gas and air-to-water heat pumps.

For flats in Longlands, the lease, the freeholder and the rules for flats all come into it. The planning rules for flats are stricter than for houses, and we check before designing.

Warranty on the equipment is the manufacturer’s own, on the manufacturer’s terms, and we set them out on your quote. Each brand sets its own conditions, and we’re happy to talk you through them.

The process

Our engineers arrive at the time agreed with you and run through the plan before anything else. Dust sheets go down over floors and anything close to the work, and anything electrical is made safe before work starts. On site, it takes several days for an air-to-water system with a new cylinder, less for an air-to-air system. Pictures of the space and the outside wall help us plan the work in Longlands.

  1. We start with your plans and the property.
  2. The survey checks heat loss, emitters, hot water and the outdoor unit position.
  3. You get our view on the right type for the house, and on whether the Boiler Upgrade Scheme applies.
  4. The system is installed and connected to the controls.
  5. The job ends with commissioning, the MCS certificate and a walk through the controls.

Preparing for the visit

  • Move furniture away from the wall where we will be working
  • Have the make and model of any existing unit to hand
  • Keep pets and children away from the work area

Ask for a quote

Photos are the fastest route to a quote: the room or the existing unit, the outside wall or roof where the outdoor unit sits or would go, and the label on any existing unit. Tell us the address and what you need, and many jobs can be priced from that.

Your questions about air source heat pumps in Longlands

Is the heat pump grant available in Longlands?

Yes, the scheme covers homes in England, including Longlands, if they qualify. Whether your home qualifies, and for how much, depends on the type of heat pump and the heating it replaces. We hold MCS certification, so the application is ours to make for you.

Will a heat pump in Longlands need planning permission?

There’s no single answer: the building and the outdoor unit position decide it. Central Longlands is a short walk from the Chislehurst Conservation Area. The permitted development rules for heat pumps leave out listed buildings and stop outdoor units going on road-facing walls or roofs in conservation areas. Anything outside the rules needs an application, and we raise it with the planning department at Bexley council, typically the authority for Longlands first.

Will I get records for the system?

Yes. It’s your proof of what was done: the date, the work, and any refrigerant added or recovered.

How long does a heat pump installation take?

The work takes anything from a couple of days for air-to-air to the best part of a week for air-to-water with radiator changes. We confirm the timing after the survey, and you can ring 07833 053749 or email us to book it.

How does the warranty work?

The manufacturer’s warranty, on the manufacturer’s terms. Each brand sets its own conditions and periods, so we explain them on your quote.

Which accreditations do you hold?

AirCon Doctor is an F-Gas certified company, with NICEIC approval for electrical work and MCS certification for heat pumps. We’re members of Checkatrade too.

Will you make a mess?

Floors and furniture near the work are covered with dust sheets before we start, and the area is kept tidy throughout. Before we leave, we clear up and run through the work with you.

What air conditioning won’t do

It’s worth knowing the limits before booking:

  • Tax advice on your own circumstances
  • Planning approval where permitted development doesn’t apply
  • Gas boiler work, such as disconnecting the old boiler, which needs a Gas Safe registered engineer

Not sure which it is? You can phone 07833 053749 or write to us at info@aircondoctor.co.uk and we will tell you honestly before booking.

Homes in Longlands and heat pumps

VOA council tax data show about 39% of homes in and around Longlands date from 1919 to 1939. Homes of that age often have cavity walls that may or may not be insulated, which the survey checks. For a London home, the outdoor unit position and the MCS noise check need careful planning.

If you live near New Eltham station, the survey compares air-to-water and air-to-air for your home before anything is quoted.

Different systems, different jobs

Air-to-water heat pumps

An air-to-water heat pump costs £8,000–£16,000 (0% VAT on homes), before the grant. A £7,500 grant may be available through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme for eligible homes and the installer applies.

Air-to-air heat pumps

Since 2025, air-to-air heat pumps can also be permitted development in England, subject to the conditions. A unit used solely for cooling is not covered and need a check with the council.
