How we handle air source heat pumps in Kingsdown

We install air source heat pumps in Kingsdown and across Kent, and we are MCS certified. There are two kinds: air-to-water, which heats radiators or underfloor heating and your hot water, and air-to-air, which warms rooms through indoor units and can also cool. We will explain which type fits your home and why. We are often asked to deal with plans to switch to electric heating with a heat pump and not knowing whether a grant applies, on homes heated by oil, LPG or gas, air-to-air heat pumps and air-to-water heat pumps.

For a house near Kingsdown, space outside is rarely the problem, so heat loss, radiators and the electrics are what we check.

Some manufacturers make regular servicing by a qualified engineer a condition of their warranty. If that applies to your system, booking the service on time keeps the record straight, and every service is written up.

Owner checks or an engineer?

For air conditioning, cleaning the indoor unit’s filters is the main job owners can do where the manufacturer’s manual explains how. With the power off, they lift out, can be vacuumed or rinsed and must be fully dry before they go back. For a heat pump, the main owner jobs are a clear outdoor unit and sensible control settings.

Don’t move, re-route or disconnect units or pipework yourself. Moving a unit involves the refrigerant circuit, so it needs an F-Gas qualified engineer, and the electrics need care too. If you need something moved, we can quote for it.

What air conditioning won’t do

Some problems need a different service or another trade:

  • Formal advice on VAT for your situation
  • Any gas work on the existing boiler
  • Draught-proofing and insulation upgrades

Not sure which it is? You can call us on 07833 053749 or use the quote form and we’ll tell you honestly.

Where we work

  • Homes heated by oil, LPG or gas
  • Air-to-air heat pumps
  • Radiator systems
  • Underfloor heating
  • Air-to-water heat pumps
  • Hot water cylinders

The process

Our engineers arrive at the time agreed with you and run through the plan before anything else. Floors and furniture near the work are covered with dust sheets, and anything electrical is made safe before work starts. On site, it takes anything from a couple of days for air-to-air to the best part of a week for air-to-water with radiator changes. We load the van from the survey notes so the work in Kingsdown can be done in one go where possible.

  1. We start with your plans and the property.
  2. We survey for heat loss and look at radiators, cylinder space and outdoor unit options.
  3. We recommend air-to-water or air-to-air and check the grant position.
  4. The system is installed and connected to the controls.
  5. We commission it, complete the MCS certificate and show you how to use it.

How to prepare

  • Keep pets and children away from the work area
  • Let us know if the building has a permit or sign-in process
  • Find the manual or the paperwork for the system, if you have it

Advice

Air source heat pumps in Kingsdown: the local picture

At about 1 mile from the coast, Kingsdown is close enough for sea air to matter. Near the coast, we choose the outdoor unit position with salt-laden wind in mind. About 82% of households live in detached or semi-detached houses, according to the last census (2021). Houses usually have space for an outdoor unit and a hot water cylinder.

If your home is listed, like Walmer Castle about 1 mile north, listed building consent comes before any heat pump work. Period properties close to St. John the Evangelist can suit a heat pump, though insulation and any heritage protection are checked first.

Kingsdown is about 2 miles south of Deal, in Kent. Kingsdown gets the same approach as every job we take on: a look at the job first, a fixed-price quote and written records at the end. Kingsdown is one of 922 places in Kent we cover. Eastbourne, roughly 56 miles off, has its own page on this site.

King's Close, Clim Down and The Rise and the roads off them are all inside our area. Here we cover the CT14 postcode area. Kingsdown questions

Is Kingsdown within the area you cover?

We do. Villages and hamlets get the same service as the bigger towns. Send a few details and photos, and we reply the same working day.

Can I fit a heat pump in Kingsdown without planning permission?

There’s no single answer: the building and the outdoor unit position decide it. A conservation area takes in the middle of Kingsdown. A heat pump on a house can be permitted development if it meets the conditions, including the MCS noise check, but not within the grounds of a listed building, and in a conservation area the outdoor unit can’t face a road. Where necessary, we check with Dover council, which is normally the planning authority for Kingsdown.

What VAT do I pay on a heat pump?

Under HMRC Notice 708/6, a heat pump installed in a home is zero-rated until 31 March 2027, then 5%. With air-to-air, HMRC’s view depends on the product, so we confirm the VAT on the quote.

Is the equipment covered by a warranty?

The manufacturer’s warranty, on the manufacturer’s terms. Terms differ by brand, and we set them out on your quote.

Can I get the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant?

Not every home qualifies, so we check. There’s one grant per property, you can’t get one to replace a low-carbon system, and hybrids are excluded, among other rules.

Do you work on all makes?

The main ones, including Mitsubishi Electric, Daikin, Fujitsu, Panasonic, Toshiba, LG, Samsung, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Hitachi. For new systems, we recommend a brand and model to suit the job and tell you why.

What accreditations do you have?

AirCon Doctor is an F-Gas certified company, with NICEIC approval for electrical work and MCS certification for heat pumps. We are also Checkatrade members.

Keeping the system healthy

After the visit, a few habits help:

  • Use the settings explained at handover
  • Keep radiators clear
  • Ask about the grant before you commit

Handover includes the controls and how to get the best from a heat pump. Steady running suits a heat pump better than switching on and off so we set the controls up with you.

Book a service every year. Check the manufacturer’s terms, as they may include servicing conditions.

From one of our customers

“Office air con broke down in the July heatwave. Called at 8am, engineer was here by noon and fixed within 2 hours. Brilliant emergency response. They now hold the service contract for the whole building.”
