Air source heat pumps in Keymer

We begin with a room-by-room heat loss survey. That tells us how much heat the home needs, room by room so the system is sized to match. Sizing by rule of thumb isn’t good enough. The work covers air-to-water heat pumps, underfloor heating and homes heated by oil, LPG or gas, and common reasons people get in touch are deciding which kind of heat pump suits the home and questions about listed buildings or conservation areas.

Cottages and older homes near Keymer can lose heat faster, so a proper heat loss calculation matters. Sometimes insulation first is the better investment.

Refrigerant work is written up in the F-Gas records: what was done, the refrigerant type and any amount added or recovered. Keep the records with the manual and the warranty documents, ready for the next service or a warranty query.

For landlords and property managers

Where a tenant occupies the property but the landlord owns the system, the lease or tenancy agreement normally sets out who maintains what. We can quote either party and send the records to whoever needs them.

Running several properties is easier with one contractor. Our area covers Greater London and the South East, so work at different addresses can be planned together and kept on a regular cycle.

Common questions in Keymer

Is Keymer within the area you cover?

Yes. Keymer is within the area we cover across London and the South East. We’re based in East Grinstead and plan each visit so the job can be finished in one trip where possible.

Is a heat pump in Keymer permitted development?

That depends on the building and where the outdoor unit goes. There’s a conservation area, the Keymer Conservation Area, close to central Keymer. On a house, an air source heat pump can often go ahead under permitted development, with an outdoor unit of no more than 1.5 cubic metres and an installation that meets MCS 020(a), which includes a noise check. Those rights don’t reach the grounds of a listed building, and conservation areas rule out walls or roofs facing a road. If that might affect you, we ask Mid Sussex council, which is normally the planning authority for Keymer.

Will you make a mess?

We put dust sheets over floors and furniture near the work first, and we tidy up as we go. At the end, we clear up and show you what we have done.

Who has to arrange F-Gas leak checks?

Responsibility is shared between the operator, typically whoever owns or controls the equipment, and the service technicians. How often depends on the size of the refrigerant charge in tonnes of CO2 equivalent: at least every 12 months from 5 tCO2e, and every 6 months from 50 tCO2e.

What VAT do I pay on a heat pump?

Not on a home installation at the moment: HMRC zero-rates heat pumps installed in residential accommodation until 31 March 2027, and 5% applies after that. The relief isn’t available to businesses, and with air-to-air we confirm the VAT on the quote. This is general information, not tax advice.

What’s the difference between air-to-water and air-to-air heat pumps?

It depends on your home, your heating and whether you want cooling. Air-to-water can attract a £7,500 grant where eligible; air-to-air only qualifies for £2,500 under strict conditions. We explain the options after the survey.

Do you provide F-Gas records?

Yes. Every visit is written up, including F-Gas records for any refrigerant work. File them with the system’s paperwork.

What the work involves, system by system

Outdoor unit position and planning

The outdoor unit needs a position with good airflow, a solid base and a sensible pipe route. We also consider neighbours and noise, as MCS 020(a) includes a noise check.

Heat loss surveys

A heat loss survey measures how much heat each room loses on a cold day. It’s the basis for sizing the heat pump and the radiators.

The process

Protection comes first: dust sheets over floors and furniture near the work and nothing is moved without asking you. After that, anything electrical is made safe and we start. The work on site takes from a couple of days to around a week, depending on the system and how much of the heating changes, and we tidy up before we leave. Photos of the existing unit and its label help with repairs and servicing near Keymer.

  1. It starts with a conversation about the home, the existing heating and your plans.
  2. On the visit we calculate what every room loses on a cold day, then check the radiators, room for a cylinder and outdoor unit options.
  3. The price comes back fixed and in writing, with the grant and VAT shown line by line.
  4. The outdoor unit, the indoor equipment and the controls are installed and connected.
  5. We commission the heat pump, complete the MCS paperwork and talk you through the controls.

How to prepare

  • Let us know where we can park and unload
  • Give us access to the outside wall, roof or yard where the outdoor unit sits
  • Clear a path to the units and the space around them

Photos are enough for some jobs; others need a visit first. Bigger systems, commercial sites and awkward pipe routes are normally surveyed on site. Either way, you get a fixed price before any work is booked.

Advice

Safe owner checks

Don’t move, re-route or disconnect units or pipework yourself. Moving a unit involves the refrigerant circuit, so it needs an F-Gas qualified engineer, and the electrical side needs a competent person. Ask us to quote for a move instead.

Before you call us about a fault, a few checks can save a visit: is the system in the right mode, is the set temperature sensible, are the remote’s batteries working and has the breaker tripped. If a breaker trips again after you reset it, leave it off and phone us on 07833 053749 or email us.

What a heat pump looks like in Keymer

About 42% of homes in the Keymer area date from 1945 to 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax records, and about 77% of households live in detached or semi-detached houses, according to the 2021 Census. Whether the walls and loft have been insulated makes a real difference to the heat pump size for homes of that period. Finding room for the outdoor unit and a cylinder is seldom a problem in homes like these.

Live in one of the older houses around St Cosmas and St Damian Church? Expect the survey to look closely at heat loss and at the building’s planning status. Homeowners near Hassocks station often ask whether a heat pump can take over from the boiler, and the heat loss survey answers that.
